460 vs 400
need some help with this.i have this really, really slick 72 ranchero, needs paint but super straight.it has a 400 in it now.i know that a 460 is the best choice, but i dont want it just foe race,i do want a tire burnin monster.can i get this w/the 400.i do want to drive it as a daily driver.i have a machinest at home that say that i shouldnt waist my time or money on the 400.i know that the torino/ranchero came out with the 429.what i'm huntin is somewhere around 400 to 500 hp.any ideas?

Do the 460, a good strong bottom end and some nice free breathing aluminum heads and intake will have all the snort the Ranchero will need..... Friend of mine is running a stock bore 460, Victor Jr. Heads, Holley Dominator, MSD "plug and play" distributor with a Comp Cams solid lifter cam.... Does 500 horse AT THE REAR WHEELS.... He's running it on E-85...... Detuned, smaller carb, and made streetable would be an easy 450 horse at the flywheel.

I agree, do the 460. The 400 is Ford's all-time dud engine, no more power than the 351M and less gas mileage than a poor 460.

A 460 with ported iron heads and a cam will get your 400HP with ease, and 500HP with good planning ain't no big deal.

the only thing i'd make sure to do is invest in a tire company, cause you're gonna have a tough time hooking up with over 500hp in a ranchero..... you'll be burning thru tires every time you slam your foot down
