looking at parts for my 429, what does this mean ?

"Although this engine is externally balanced, there is no imbalance weight in the damper so it comes as a neutral balance damper". also had "Available in External or Neutral balance"

Copied from the Pro Race website:

"Please Note: that the 429-460 engines are often called ‘externally balanced’, however unlike most engines, the external balance mass is attached to the spacer sleeve behind the damper. The damper is neutral balanced; however the spacer sleeve is externally balanced."

ok, this is some info i got from another board, any of this sound right ?

"If it's a 71 core engine then external balance is simply meaningless to you because that started in 1979 and does not apply to your engine at all."

here is the info i have on parts i can see, i cant actually get a true date, only casting numbers,,

All harmonic balancers, regardless of year of the 429/460, are neutral balance pieces and will fit any 429/460 engine. The difference between internal balanced/external balanced rotating assemblies is in the crank spacer (located between balancer and timing cover) and the flexplate (bolted to rear of crankshaft).

99% likelihood that your engine is internally balanced. All of the D1VE blocks came this way from the factory, but it is technically still possible that somebody rebuilt your engine and fit it with a late model exernal balance crank..although this is highly unlikely.

The D1VE blocks were used from 1971-1978.

The D3VE heads were used from 1973-1985.

Paul, so you are saying that even if an engine has D1 starting out the block number, it could be even later? That's surprising to learn. I always thought Ford used that number to nail it down to a specific year.

Is that just for the 429/460 blocks and parts, or does that same logic carry over to the 302's. 351's, etc.

The Ford parts dates mean the year the part was first used. If it went on unchanged, the year code didn't change.
