Is it possible to remove an oil pan on a'77 ford with a 460bb
without taking the motor out?
F250 longbed
Is there a cross member under the pan? Does the cross member bolt on or welded? If so you might be able to drop the pan enough to unbolt the oil pickup and slide it out one side. Try going on Ford truck enthusiast web site and post the same question. You'll get a lot of truck help fast there from people who have the same truck as you. Hope this is helpfull!
Unfortunately with a 460 in a Ford pick up, you have to jack the engine off of the motor mounts about 2" as the front sump wont clear the cross member ( I had both a '76 F250 and a '79 F350 with 460s) - and the job isn't all that bad if you have the right tools - a long stroke/arm jack and 2 blocks of wood.
Pulling the engine for that - nahhhh - that is unless you wanted to do more work on it while it's apart. What happened - your pan rust out like my F350? They all will eventually:whacked:
Lots of room under them big old Ford trucks... Like Dave said though, raise the engine up a couple inches befor you even try getting the pan off....
PS--I had one of them pans rust out, too....:LOL::LOL::LOL:
Dave where do you jack up the engine so that the pan is free to come out?

Actually i figured it out!
I unbolted the front engine mounts,put a jack
underneath the harmonic balance then put two
pieces of wooden blocks to support it,slid the
jack out and removed the pan,:cool:

That works too ....but don't forget that the damper is two piece and you can break the rubber elastomer seal, especially on a 32 year old engine - then you wonder why the timing is so far off:LOL::LOL: Oh yeah, another 460 PITA - the dist can 'freeze" in place, then you have another problem:whacked:
