I recently bought a 64 Galaxie 500 XL and amt rying to identify the engine in it. I was told it was a 390 when I bought it but have not found a way to verify that as of yet. Where do I find the codes/numbers theat will give me the information I want? This was a drag car in the early 80's at the Formosa (SP?) drap strip in Bakersfield California. It still runs very strong (With trip deuces) and I plan to leave it like that. Any info someone can give me will be appreciated.

Love them 390/ 406 type engines, especially with trips. Plus your car has a history. Really cool.

i got 12 fords in the driveway..... :-D.... check on the botom engine next to the altenator for the engine code, that'll tell you what you need to find your engine

And the head casting numbers are between the center 2 spark plugs. The date code on the block is below the oil filter adapter. The date code on the heads are between the center 2 valvesprings under the valve cover. Look for a number/letter/number(s) sequence for date codes. The blocks casting number may or may not tell you what cid it is. Some block casting numbers are known to be generic. Gotta love those 3x2's. I have one on my 406. Welcome aboard!
