fe gear drive
Is there an advantage to replacing the stock timing chain for a gear drive system. Such as Pete jackson/ edelbrock or any other. The vehicle is just an around tower not for hi pro anything.

I wouldn't use one of them. There isn't any good reason, only negatives.

Cannot tolerate the sound of aftermarket gear drives installed by wannabee blower motor builders. Have heard bad things about harmonics that are created, not good for the valvetrain.
On the flip-side, cannot explain multi-billions of miles racked up by OEM 6-cylinder motors with gear drive and no problems. Then there are also the zillions of flathead Fords that operated with gears. ?????

I think every one I've ever seen had an owner who couldn't wait to put the chain back. Noisy, zero benefit over a good, tight sprocket & chain.Roger

I believe the OEM gear drives don't share the same issues of noise and vibrations/harmonics is due to the materials they use for the cam gear, usually a fibrous gear. And I believe it absorbs / neutralizes / cancels out the harmonics, noise, vibrations.

they are one to one and gears are not staight cut so they do not play on each other back lash . the live two idlers that some cheap gear drive use are like a ratchet alot of staigth cut gears and alot of play going on in the set up this is the sound .if you go one to one on the cam Isky did them for sbc and Gm did a BBC off road cam must be custom ground as its going the other way the marine rev cams are geard one to one and they work fine that the only way i use them when i say one to one by this i mean gear to gearLast edited by pat mccarthy; 01-07-2014 at 05:43 PM.

I was thinking more of the 6 cylinder motors. Like the slant 6 or the 170 / 230 /250 fords. In some ways I'd like to lose the chain drive, chains stretch in a short amount of time (relatively speaking) but I'm not racing it... so giving up a couple/few pounds of torque / hp isn't a real concern.

I thought about putting one on my 428 and after all the research and thoughts from all you cats I will not even consider it. Its a waste of money and time to gain no real advantage.
Thank you Roger. .
