I recently acquired a 410 (C6ME) out of a 66 or 67 Mercury? I'd like to build it up for drag racing or truck pulling. Can I or should I turn it into a 428?

I hear they make great boat anchors :D
With the long arm, the 410's make good torque just the way the are. Find a good set of 4V or aluminum heads for it.
I used to hunt doves with a 410, but I traded it in on at 12 ga.
Well first of it's an original 410 it's rare as they only were produced in 66-67. Kinda a odd ball engine like the 406. I'd look into min overbore or just honing to clean up the bores. Then look at the Scat 4.125 (?) cranks to stroke it further. As mentioned a sonic check will tell you wall thickness and if 428 is doable. That's .080 over...Yow! It's been done though....JMO, G.
ya those are rare motorsQuote:

A 410 is just a 390 block with a 428 reciprocating assembly that came in the big 66-67 Merc's, different pistons from a 390 though because of the longer stroke. Using original parts you can put together a fairly stout high torque engine. Use a PI intake, 750'ish cfm vac. secondary carb, a modern split pattern cam, and a free flowing exhaust.
The only way I would consider trying to turn it into a 428 (4.13" bore) is after you get a sonic check done to verify cylinder wall thickness. Even then I probably wouldn't bore it out the .080" because an extra 18 ci isn't going to make that much difference.
When I saw this thread I was gonna' suggest a 12 ga. might have a better pattern for duck huntin' ............... But ya' beat me to it.   :LOL:Quote:

Denny welcome and your engine is way cool at OVER 575HP!!!!! There are guys paying big bucks for 427's that don't put out that much. Well done. G.
Denny, sounds like a killer FE motor. Curious to hear what heads, cam, valve train etc. you have in it. Welcome to CHR.
Yea Denny I'm right there with you. I'm on a tight budget myself. I wish I had kept more of the old stuff I've collected over the years. I could probably have retired LOL. It's funny how things change. I have a hard time paying the kind of money these parts are selling for today. So I shop for deals and do the work myself.....grin and bear with the prices. I do love it though! Looking forward to hearing about the rest of your build. G.
Hey Denny, a guy I know just rebuilt one of those 410 motors and put it in a 66 T-Bird, and he put a Ford 3x2 setup on top! He was having trouble getting the carbs set up so he brought it to some guy he knows and the guy got it running "better" for him! He said the right bank seems to be running"rough" and this guy told him to get..............I`m sorry, "he needed" a set of adjustable rockers, which said guy just happens to have a set of for the mere price of $350.00 !!!!!!!!! The engine is bone stock except for some crane springswhich he put in thinking he would put a cam in it???? I told him I thought he was wasting his money and that guy was trying to hose him.
I do now......................boy do I feel dumb!
Been there ............. done that.............. :)Quote:

I usta' hunt pheasants with a 410. Had 4:10 gears in my '56 chebbie too. HEHEHEHE:LOL:
Yup, it's an old post. But it is full of good information!!! Denny, I gave a copy of your cylinder head post to my machinist and work is progressing. This is the motor that will eventually wind up in my Ranchero if I ever get a chance to get back to it. I did score a set of adjustable aluminum rockers at a swap meet allready this year, stock ratio aluminum ones, still have to get new rocker arm shafts. I am using a 390 block, and still considering a stroker kit with some light pistons. Wish I could find a stock dual four set up for it, I have a PI intake for it, and a used Dove (another swap meet peice I picked up) but the Dove is a long runner open plenum design and would probably put the rpm range a bit high for where I want to run it. It will of course be backed with my old trusty Doug Nash 5 speed and a nine inch floater rear end. If I decide on the bottom end I will hit up you and G for some help on the cam. Keep the good info coming.
I have a friend that has one in a 79 ford bronco. I am amazed at how much torque it will produce and still rev to 6500 with a stock cam and valve springs. In order to make it a 428 you will have to bore it .080 to get to the standard 4.13 428 bore. If it will go that far why not. The thing to remember is they only made the merc 410 for two years if my memory is correct. If you are going to race it you will only have a small usage time out of it and then you can't rebuild it. So it might be better to leave it as a 410 and slowly bore it so you can continuely use it rebuild after rebuild. With a decent set of heads and a nice cam, I don't think you will be disappointed!
Dave
Yup, they do. I was on a set at an auction last summer up to $950.oo, they finally sold for $1600.oo. Haven't done a thing to the ports yet, gotta wait til my machinist isn't quite so busy (circle burner motor season now) and go do some playing on the flow bench. For now, he is doing the guides, valves, and spring heights. I will be anxiously waiting for the porting plans. Thanks
