460 into a 68 Mustang
What would I need to use to stuff a 460 into my 68 mustang?
Would I have to modify the shock towers?
Any special motor mounts, headers, or oil pan needed?

Really it's too much work to make it worth while, new tranny, new motor mounts, need to spread the shock towers apart and then it might fit and, even if it does don't even think about changing the plugs or even the oil if the filter isen't relocated. A modified 302 would be more than sufficient just turn oneto a 347 ( I belive that's the correct CID number ) stroker motor.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

I have a 70 model 351 c 4v with c6 and 9inch in the 68 Fastback at the moment. I like it but was thinking a little bigger. And I always want to be alittle different, in a good way that is.
Would the shock tower need to be modified as they were for the Boss 429?

Pretty much the same Joe. Things do get a bit snug with the big blocks in their, but they're tolerable. If you go with the aluminum heads on a big block, the weight increase is only about 100 lbs as compared to your Cleveland. Have fun and post some pics. By the way, they do make some nice stroker kits for the Clevelands now, just something to consider.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Would you happen to know were I could get some instructions on redoing the shock towers as done for Ford?
This is the only part I am not so sure of. I would like a nice looking job like factory.

Don't know of instructions for doing the towers, do a lot of measuring and trial fitting, then make some templates for patterns and modify to fit. Might be easier to start with a bare block with a transmission bolted up to get your motor mounts installed, then start the trim and fit time on the shock towers.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Guys,
Maybe I'm wrong and I can't find my engine swap info amongst all the magazines I have around here, But I always thought that the 429/460 was 2 inches narrower than the FE's and 390's were an option in the 67-68 and later Mustangs so the shock towers and upper control arms should not be a problem.
Measure twice, drop in once, then get the fire axe out and make it fit. HE, HEDuane S

I just got a reply back from Crites restoration. They have a kit for my car that does come with a template for the shock towers, motor mounts, and insulators.
What would be a better motor for my car? An early 429 or a 460?

Just found a lead on a 429 from a 1971 Cyclone. 71000 on the odometer when it was parked because of a broken ball-joint. Complete motor from air cleaner to exaust manifolds. Motor is out of the car. The man wants $650. Book says it is 360hp. Seems that it should be worth that. I may start with this.

Joe, the 429 is a good Motor, rpm's a bit quicker than a 460 and makes very good power. The motor should be more than adequate for your horse. The info from Crites should make the whole process go smoother. Have fun and post us some pics as you go.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

68 mustang 460 swap
Total Performance in Clinton Twp. Mich has all the parts. Thats where I got mine. Easy swap no worries.

385 series Forum
You may want to check out the 385 series forum for engine questions. I'd go with a 460 crank in the 429 for more Cubic Inches and torque. My Buddy has a 472 in his '70 Mustang and it's a tight squeeze. Check out my picture gallery for some photos of his Mustang.

can anybody help! i have a 1972 429 that i think came out of a ltd "bought it for $100.00" i had it rebuilt cost around $4000.00. i hate to say it now but i was all chevy until now. it runs ok and will smoke some chevy's but its not all there. when i went back to get the specs the shop would not tell me anything about it "yes they are out of business". im asking for help? can i convert it to a cj or not. can anybody help with plans specs parts list to rebuild it from ground up. im wanting true power. so if i can be pushed in the right direction i would be grateful. if needed you can post or email me at k9_zeke@yahoo.com.

I have a 68 falcon that I stuffed a 429 into- fit wasn't a problem. Have about 1/8" of clearance on either side between the manifolds. It is solid mounted, and the car runs pretty smooth on the drive to work every day. However, getting a fan to fit on it was quite a challenge- had to modify pulleys so that the fan would bolt on without a spacer. Considering I was working outside on the dirt and had to put up with hurricanes for three weekends in a row, I'd say the car isn't too bad. (especially for a first-timer like me!) I don't really know how the shock towers on the mustang differ from a falcon's- to a novice like me they look pretty much the same. I have heard that ford did modify them to fit those monster 429 boss motors...
