57 Chevy Cruizer

Yeah, caster is caster, Pro... Think I'll start out at the 5-7 degree area and make some wedge plates if it should need more... With the big motor in the Comet, ran 150's all summer long with 6 degrees...

Roadster and Halftanked... Done that a few times myself on customer cars... Trying to come up with something a bit different for this car, but something that still would have the look of being done in the mid 60's.. I've given some thought to opening them up to 3" and using them for intakes for an air box for the carb(s)?????

Jay, I was sanding a bit on the hood today...Looks like it's had a repaint on the hood at one time, some black primer underneath it;.....Man, the paint and primer is like sanding a piece of granite!!!! 80 grit cuts it for awhile then quit, tried some 220, same thing!!! Seem to have to switch back and forth on grits to get the paint and primer off!!! Any idea what this would be?

They were obviously done in recent times. PPG makes a black primer. I think it's DP40... but I can't swear to it.

I thought some about colors. In the '60s race cars and rods tended to use the basic colors... red-yellow-blue-black and white.

On the other hand, using a '50s color might be typical of a '50s bodied car. The pale blue on the '57s was nice. The aqua was also highly popular on them. That was the time that metallics were being intrduced, like the Aztec Copper on the '57... but metallics are more common today than solids.

Whatever you use... I would try to go for something that would look nostalgic... and not be a color used a lot today.

If you decide to use a car name... maybe one of those colors would be a natural. :-) Song titles often make great names... and you could pick one form that time to give it more personality. Now lets see... Motown was big then... the British invasion was just starting... but we all were still singing '50s songs. Lotsa choices. {:-)

57's had a model that was black and white.It was the only one built that was fuel injected.It was known as "The Black Widow".Yeah,not a gasser per say,but was one of the factory models that had a rep.

I think it was older, Jay.. I've used and sanded DP, this stuff is way harder to sand... Also a repair on the RF fender with the same black primer, and lead underneath it! Anyway, nothing I remember using.

When you look back at the old pictures, all the gassers and alterds had a name and as you mentioned, a lot of them related to music....hmmmmm. I keep thinking of a two tone, but then a lot of the pics I've looked at most of the cars from the era were a solid color. Seen pics of a few done in one of my favorites, Anniversary Gold.... Possible to come up with a color and a name that fit the era and the car?????

Just some thoughts. You could use those with any colors you like.

It was built specifically for NASCAR. Here's an example....

ppg black dp90. dp40 gray green . dp60 i think was red . dp 48 white ? gray 50. i shot many gallons of the black for die cast valve covers for M&A castings :) in the shops we use the dp 40 all the time other colors not so much Acme/ Sw had a black primer

I really, really, really, really like the Black Widow motif, but if not, then here is another offering......

Install the 150 side chrome, paint it pearlescent white and call it "Nights in White Satin"

I was only about ten years old, but I will never forget the '57 Chevy BelAire that the old retired doctor in our tiny SW Missouri town special ordered - Matador Red over Coronado Yellow :eek: That car was so ugly it's burned into my memory cells forever :LOL: Cannot believe the dealer let him order it, and more cannot believe the factory actually painted it. Don't think I can do the chrome, but the two tone split is sure nice!!!! Probably have to be aggressive kind of colors for a gasser????

Two thoughts on the color thing.

First, it might be fun to mess with the Tri-Five resto guys heads. Do the car up in Black Widow livery, right down to the 150 side trim, cross flags and Fuel Injection trim pieces. Imagine the fun you can have when they get that ghastly look on their face and say something like ".....you didn't really cut up a real Black Widow to make a gasser didja?" Just grin..............

For a single color, gasser appropriate, I'd go Yellow. To my eye it's a great color for a gasser, and not all that common like red, blue, black,......
The name possibilities are numerous. Just a few for example: Yellow Fever, Lemonade, or Lemon Aid, Lemon Peel (like in peel out), and on and on. If you go with the Lemon theme you could airbrush simulated dimples on the roof to look like a lemon peel (or leave it out in a really good hail storm :D).

no if your going yellow you could call it mellow yellow and that would fit in with the time frame of the song mellow yellow by donovan ???

One of the local legends around here (and it is tucked away in a barn, still as it was raced back in the day) is a tri5 called 'Hacksaw'

When I was a kid I found a 55 gasser called Tasmanian Devil stored away in a corn crib. Had a Taz cartoon painted on the front fenders behind the wheels, Tasmanian Devil lettered down the sides. That was a cool thing to stumble upon. The crib was one of only a couple buildings left on an old abandoned farm site. A few months later I went back again and it was gone. :CRY:

There was a 57 that was called "The Bad Banana" which was colored yellow.Stock class winner on a national level.But that car was a four door wagon.

I would say to use a name that most people (our age) would remember.... that fits the personality you want the car to have... and a solid color, since most guys then didn't use metallics for race cars.

If "Mellow Yellow" works for you, then it would probably seem right to others. I have this theory about paint schemes... If too many people don't "get it" then it was probably not a great idea.

I think the Heinz idea is really cute... and the "ketchup" referrence... but you have to remember the slogan about "57 varieties". I don't think I've heard that spoken in decades. (...but it IS funny!) :-)~

I had to go stand out in the alley yesterday in the 20 degree weather just so I could "see" the colors on the car. Yellow really works! Ketchup red is great, but there's so dang many red cars around already...maybe yellow too-heck, who knows?

I did manage a bit of time on the '57's hood yesterday, got the inner structure taken out of the hood to expose some surface rust underneath where the braces where--in places. Nothing real bad that can't easily be fixed though. There was also a few little dents, but a bit of dingin' and pingin' took care of that. Hopefully it will warm up a bit this weekend and I'll have time to use my little hand blaster to get the last of the rust out of the little pits, and get some primer on it.

I will remind you that yellow always seem to attract bugs if you plan to take it to car shows etc.

That's what popped into my head - it's a 57.. so.. Heinz! I had a dog from the pound once and that's what I named him. Cause who knows what his background was!:LOL:

Sounds like a good choice, and the fact that the song was a "fave" makes it personal for you. :-)


Here is a thought to ponder.... Really intense or bright yellows were not available yet. If you go with a light yellow it would look more "vintage".

I'm not sure, but I think the '55 Chevy used a light yellow for yellow & white two-tones. (I could be wrong, but that image is stuck in my head!)

I think they might have been Fentons, other American models, E.T.s.. or similar straight spoked wheels, with a black or gray centers.

Cragars (my own street favorite), and Keystones, came along a little after those, but appeared more like "dress wheels" to most people. They didn't seem to get to the dragstrip as often as the spoked wheels.

Just please don't use directionals or spinner mags! LOL! :-)

i would do a heavy flake job med blue and a panel job on hood and lid pearl white top with some freak drops on the hood and lid and call it interstellar over drive or voodoo child but it is not mine :)

When I first suggested yellow I didn't think it would catch on like it has, but I'm glad to see you guys "get it". Jay is correct, eye searing yellow wouldn't be quite right, but what's "too" bright is in the eye of the beholder.

I have to admit to being strongly influenced by my early days at the track in San Fernando. As I mentioned in your first thread on this car, to me the baseline car for Tri-5 gassers is the Scribner brothers '56. Look at the picture again. It's got a scoop like what you seem to be coming around to, and it's got the torque thrust style wheels, the neatly done wheel radius, simple graphics, the whole mid to late '60s vibe. This was one of the cleanest (and meanest) gassers of the day.........

As for the tone of the yellow, it's brighter than the stock Chev color, but warmer too........that warmth is what I had in mind.

Here is a close approximation of the factory color.

Best I could find on short notice. Restored cars are getting rarer, and old photos are usually faded or poor color.

Good points, Jay! To stay with a Mellow Yellow theme, it would have to be a "mellow" yellow color, for sure!

Think Bob nailed the rear wheel, but I do like the re-pops that are out now, a 5 bolt version of the old 10 spoke spindle mounts in 15X4 for the front, also available with the grey center.... I recall a lot of the old Gassers with different wheels on the front then the rear, I suppose because we just didn't have the selection of sizes and widths like there is today.

Dave, Are you gonna weld the dog house together and make it flip? Ladder bars in the back? My neighbor in Ft Walton Beach Florida in the mid 70s had a 57 done that way, straight axle, flip front end, big block 396 Chevy and 4 speed. It was charcoal gray. He also had a yellow one with original front suspension and a nasty 301, 4 spd and 4.88 gears. He claimed the yellow car would eat the gray one up. I know it sounded wicked. The gray one was his daily driver.

One idea for the moon tank, use it for racing fuel and keep driving fuel in the main tank.

Yuppers, the Scribner Bros. car pretty much sez it all!!! When I visualize a mid 60's gasser, that's the one I think of! I believe you first brought that picture to our attention a couple years back when Scooter was going gasser????

Really gald you brought up yellow for a color, think it's the way to go on the '57. Subtle seems to be the key to cars of the era. Going to take some doing to get just the right yellow, isn't it? Oh well, the guy that mixes paint at ABS has hated me for 20 years so no big deal there!!!!!:LOL::LOL::LOL:

Yuppers, going to use the steel Bel Air front clip that I have. It's in good shape and I do like the thought of a tilt front---that's real steel! Going to have to be a small block, one of my old circle burnin' buds is going to "help out" on the engine so, his money, his choice! I've already started putting the front sheet metal on a diet, have to get the scale out and see what the weight loss is so far. Specs show the original weight of the car to be a shade over 3200, got to shave a lot off of that....
