Thanks Pugsy!
Great software. Thanks!
thanks for the website for the software
Dan
Pugsy - How did I miss this build? Very cool mods to the original front. Your sheet metal skills are fantastic! The frame and the geometry for the front suspension is seriously some of the most detailed stuff I've seen here. Thank you for posting your build, I look forward to seeing it thru!
You're welcome Dave.
No problem Rick.
Anytime Dan.
The Engine Analyzer is nice.
I've ran it twice for free trials. Once at work and once at home.
I'm out of IP addresses to run it anymore.:p
If I remember correctly, its a little over 4 bills. Too rich for my blood.
Thanks Steve.
All these details are taking forever.
I was out tapping on the front metal on the weekend and man am I having a hard time.
I tacked everything together before I should have and I'm paying the piper now.
The shape is way off and its gonna be pretty hard lifting the whole car onto the English wheel to smooth out all the knock dings I've put into it.:whacked:
Well, there's always high build primer and bondo I guess.
After figuring out the pivot points I started on the sleeves for the ball joints.
I found some nice steel screw in style sleeves for the upper arms at the local speed shop.
As I wanted stainless finish, I welded some schedule 80 pipe around the sleeves to weld the arm to.

For the lowers, I got stock Cobra ball joints.
These were a little trickier as they are press in
I used two pieces of schedule 80 pipe for these. I had to cut a sliver out and reweld to the correct size to fit the balljoint. The weld seams ended up under the connection point of the arm to the sleeve to lock everything up for sure.

The pic below shows the fit of the ball joint after it was pressed out.

Here's a beauty move.
Nice looking lower control arm going together.....
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...48_Medium_.jpg
It would be good if it was going on a train and the wheels didn't have to turn....DOH!
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...65_Medium_.jpg
I cut the obtrusive pipe off and started on the upper arm to get the wheel turning and to figure out how to get out of the lower arm mess.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...07_Medium_.jpg
Jigged the upper arms up to weld the sleeves on.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...69_Medium_.jpg
Got the uppers done and the bushings and sleeves made up.
I screwed the ball joints in to check things out.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...77_Medium_.jpg
I got the lower control arm mess sorted out and finished the coilover mounts and Delrin bushings.

http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...05_Medium_.jpg
Of coarse a couple of grease fittings for good measure.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...12_Medium_.jpg
I cut all the pieces for the crossmember and the front kickups and welded them up.

I got the 1'' diameter solid sleeves with 5/8 fine threaded tapped ends tacked in place.
These are for the steering rack and lower control arms.
Over the sleeves that protrude are pieces of 1-1/2'' pipe with end caps to stiffen things up some more.
Everything was chamfered before welding for strength.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...05_Medium_.jpg
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...92_Medium_.jpg
I also got the upper coilover mounts ready and did a little mock up here.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...05_Medium_.jpg
I got the crossmember and coilover mounts welded and polished up.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...15_Medium_.jpg
I then made up the upper control arm mounts.
My first thought was to use different amount of shims behind the front and rear of the plate to achieve camber and castor. This was a mistake as the plate is solid and shims will need to be applied evenly.
I had slots milled in the plate and made up some eccentric washers to be able to adjust castor. I got this idea from the bolts used on the Ford upper arms of the IRS.
Shims behind will adjust camber.

Wow Pugsy it looks great. Nice custom work.
Thanks Steve.
I got the chassis rolling and pushed it outside for the first time.

Next thing was to make up some motor mounts to hold up the big block Chevy.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...50_Medium_.jpg
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...36_Medium_.jpg
Then a crossmember for the tranny.
Its actually going to hold up the Gearvendors overdrive unit so I will be able to weld it in and still be able to pull the tranny no problem.
The exhaust pipes will run thru the 4'' holes.

Man nice work ..You still have snow on the ground and I was (am) complaining about rain
Next thing to do was to start the exhaust system.
I started with 4 pcs of 3'' dia stainless for the X pipe.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...30_Medium_.jpg
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...63_Medium_.jpg
Then some elbows were added at the front and back.
I'm using Dynamax Ultraflow Welded mufflers. I hope its not too loud.

[QUOTE=RestoRod;428505]Beautiful work Pugsy but I hope those shots weren't taken recently.....your weather usually comes our way and I hoped we were through with the white stuff.[/QUOTE
I guess those pics were done about February.
I've almost got this build thread up to present day.
Headers:
First thing I did on the headers was to make the 4 into one merges.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...93_Medium_.jpg
I saw this mockup system on the website from where I got my header flanges.
Pretty slick idea I thought and the mockup really helped.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...25_Medium_.jpg
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...39_Medium_.jpg
I had to get both sides pretty much done before I could knock the merges from the jig and add them to the headers.
They didn't fit so well so a bit of slicing and welding was in order.

A few pics of the almost completed exhaust.
Just needs some polishing here and there and something's got to be done with the tailpipes.
Not sure what to do with them yet.

I've now got the thread caught up to the current timeline.
I mentioned a few posts back about assembling the front end sheet metal prematurely.
I'm working on it now as I'm waiting for the rad to arrive.
I checked the shape either side of center and got a nice shock:
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...67_Medium_.jpg
I held the profile guage at the same location on the driver's side:
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...68_Medium_.jpg
I've got the shape coming along very slowly.
It looks as though I'll be caking the bondo on.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...79_Medium_.jpg
man it just keeps looking better. Very nice job, once again.
Thanks Steve.
I'm OK with the chassis and exhaust but I'm in bit of trouble at present with the sheet metal work.
I guess I'll just keep tapping away and see what happens......
Ahhh yes, the beloved dingin' and pingin'!!! Sheet metal work is fun, but it sure can get frustrating and time consuming sometimes!
Beautiful work, Pugsy. The exhaust collectors turned out fantastic, as did the whole exhaust system. I envy your metal working skills.
Nice work---
For anyone wanting merge collectors for building headers---WWW.CONEENG.COM---I use them for merge collector parts
Trying to get the sheet metal panels exactly the same on both sides---back then---30s---and even now---both sides of everything isn't exact opposite
Very nice work--you must use a lot of vacume cleaner filters cleaning up all your grinding residue-----
Thanks for the kind words Gentlemen.
Ya Jerry. I'm absolutely sick of polishing at this point. Messy business for sure.
At least I'm at the point where if I get sick of welding and polishing stainless, I can jump back to the body panels and vice versa.
From the pics of your work I can tell that this isn't your first and that you are working to that level because before this you have set a very lofty level that represents your goal and now everything you do has to be even further out there!!!!!
I love stainless because it can be welded and polished instead of painting or chroming---got really pissed at a customer/friend a couple years ago that I built a 32 coupe for and did a Cobra style side pipe/headers in stainless and polished them---somehoe, somebody at the paint shop sent them out and had them powder coated---Pics of car are in my gallery of the exhaust.
Yep between you Ken, and Steve from England, we are getting to see alot of polished stainless. It really does look great when it is done! Jerry - I'd be upset to if somebody powder coared a polished stainless header system that I went thru all the trouble to fabricate!
I guess maybe I shoulda said upset instead of_____________________, but the gallery photos don't show the finished exhaust system---lots of other things where changed ---The front and rear suspensions were polished stainless, fuel tanks---plumbing stainless hard line routed inside frame rails, etc, etc
I didn't see the finished pics but looked good from what I saw.
Crazy thing is that I will get these ceramic coated.
But yours are under the car---
Those pics were taken by a art major doing phtog course and wanted to do some auto work---
DOH!
Sometimes I really sleep........zzzzzzzz..........
I decided to stiffen up the front panel and also eliminate some of the access metal to get some relief in the panel.
I made up a trim ring for the grill cutout.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...20_Medium_.jpg
I got it tacked in place........
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...30_Medium_.jpg
And some welding, dinging and smoothing.... not perfect but getting there.
http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...41_Medium_.jpg
Thanks for looking,
pugsy the work is looking really good .
Thanks Bobby.
It was a little scary for a bit there but it should work out fine.
