Thanks, guys. Dave, you are exactly right..........when we weld it to the frame it is going to get triangular gussets on the outside and some bracing on the inside to hold the mounts firmly to the frame. That is why we quit last night, it was getting late and we want to think about the next step and the best way to gusset it all. :)
Mike, each mount is 4 pieces. Two rounded sides, a 4 x 4.5 inch back plate, and a 1 x 3 top section. Dan welded on the top section first, joining the two sides together, then rounded over the edges so it looks kind of like a stamped piece, then welded that back plate on to the whole thing.
Here is a picture of how we gusseted the last one we did, on the 39 Dodge pickup. This time we were able to center the bars more on the rail so it won't hang out that much, making the gussets a little smaller.

Steve, you would do fine. It really is pretty simple, just takes some thinking to get it all in line and moving in the correct plane. It could be done a lot quicker than we are going but we have no deadline and spending a little more time on each bracket makes the whole end result just a little nicer.
If Dan keeps pushing me in this direction I may have to rethink painting it with a brush. :LOL: One night I told him I was going to distress the paint on the suspension to make it look old and he looked as if I had stabbed him in the heart. :eek: So I guess we won't be doing that. :D

Don I've seen a few high dollar distress jobs around here! I think you should do what you want for a finished look. I like the old faded business signs on the doors, or something like nose cone art on a ww2 bomber plane!

That's pretty cool. I am thinking of putting Don's Speed Shop, est 1945 on each door, then scuffing it to look aged. I guess I could also tell the sign painter to not fill in the letters all the way to help that out. They also sell a lot of vintage decals on Ebay, even class winner stickers. I am thinking of putting some of those on the cowl and maybe A/A on the back of the body. If you are building a fake you might as well go all the way. :o:D

What for me is even cooler about the car I pictured is that the speed shop was owned, now many years closed, by a 50 year friend, even though he never owned a '32 roadster:D. Lots of stories I could relate, but wont publicly:D.

I’ve already picked up a couple of the decals to match the speed equipment that’s on the 37, WEIAND and JAHNS (and am thinking about B/G on the corner of the cab). I’ll probably mount them on an magnetic backing, or the rear window.
I like the Bomber Girl art, also the girl riding the camshaft, I think it was Giovanni cams, maybe. Door art has gotten popular again.

I know, Jack, I am as blind as a bat anymore. I just bought new glasses last week, my prescription was about 3 years old. I still can't see. I was never a great welder but now I just tack weld stuff, if that. :(

yep nice welds well you still may with a mig you can set it up to spot weld timmer or plus weld. what that will do is give you more of that pronounce row of dimes look to the weld what many like to see and is strong but many fail a weld test. the test i took out in TX they would not let you work in and out of the puddle or stop in go more or less stitch they did not want you to work the puddle they wanted to to stay in the sheild gas and wanted is much heat in the part and a hot flowing weld . but not like i said the welds that has the dimes on there side look. were a mig weld should look like a 7018 or 7024 were the machine is running in spray transfer. Tig you can get the dime look and have a very strong weld but you have to be dead steady with the torch with my screw up back it s hard less i get laid out with muscle relaxers . as for old eyes i go one up or two on the shade that helps abit as well
I used to do a lot of welding on cranes and structural steel. Had to be certified on each job. BUT that was 35 to 40 years ago.. All I use now is mig.
Steve, I actually bought two of those, one stronger than the other. I saw them at the Lincoln welding booth at the Tampa Street Rod Nats and bought them when I got back. My problem is the darkness, I am going to play with some sort of led light attached to the torch because as soon as the arc starts it all goes dark for me. The reason I haven't really tried to fix the problem is that it is so much easier to just let Dan do it right rather than my half way right welds.

Yep, the Optomotrist told me last week he sees some issues starting in my eyes, especially the right one, so it is just old age. :( Dan and Don do have auto darkening helmets, so I could set them a little less dark I guess. My welding was never anything to write home about anyway, so I don't mind giving it up.

It may be your helmet. I was having the same problem with one of the auto-darkening Chinese specials from Northern Tool - a great helmet for the price, but I was having trouble seeing the puddle. When it started "flashing" me at arc strike (slow to darken) I visited my Praxaire guy and picked up a Miller ProHobby helmet. It is lighter when "off", allowing clear visibility to position the wire, darkens quick to a steady shade, and adjustment of the darkness is sooooo much better. You might see if your welding shop will demo the helmets for you. Here's the one I got in classic black - Miller - Welding Helmets & Welder Safety Equipment and Clothing - Pro-Hobby™ Series I need to pick up one of those diopter lenses for it to make it even better.

I love all those old decals. The Honest Charlie one brings back a bunch of memories. I remember when all the stuff in his catalog was hand drawn. Honest Hiself was quite a character. :LOL:
