Starting to come together ...How big a house you figure on pulling over :LOL::LOL::LOL:
I got a little more done on Saturday. I removed the old rear cross member, welded in the new one, and removed the old gas tank cross members. Then I started welding all the un needed holes shut inside and out.

So how will the ball & release work with the bed in place? I'm assuming that this lets you remove the ball for hauling stuff, but put it in for a 5th wheel, right?
The rod will be inbetween the bottom of the bed floor, and top of the frame sticking out in the wheel well area. You reach in and pull the handle, then remove the ball and flip it over so your bed floor is flat. No 5th wheel adapter for me. I don't have any 5th wheels. I have seen an adapter for them though. I still have to build the catch for the release handle. I'll get to that.
I cut out the last old cross member and welded in the new one. I also mocked up my fuel tank to see how much room I'm going to have. I think it's going to fit fine.

Coming along nicely Ryan! Angle is goofy on the 2nd pic, no clearance issues on the tank and the center section, is there??
Thanks Dave. I don't think there will be until it's fully aired out. I'm planning moving the rear axle back 1" more to get the tire centered in the wheel well and to get a little more clearance in between the cab and box. Then it might be getting close. Exhaust is going to be a whole other issue........
This shaping up into a super nice hauler
I worked on this truck a little bit inbetween projects a couple weeks ago. I removed the rear suspension, cut out the 2 rear boxing plates, ground them to fit, and beveled them and the frame flange to ensure a strong weld after I finish grind the welds to make it look purdy.

Purdy....:):):):)
Looks good Ryan and the boxing plates really add to the strength!
Thanks guys. The plates are out of 1/4" and I will be boxing all the way up to behind the front leaf spring shackles.
WOW, 1/4" is stout! Also = HEAVY!
It'll be interesting to see what it weighs when it's done compared to another 72 K20. The steel floor, boxed frame, diesel engine and heavier drivetrain, I'm guessing 6500-6800lbs. We shall see though. My 95 F-350 crew cab with a cummins weighs 7340lbs with a 1/4 tank of fuel and it isn't build out of old school sheet metal.
I really dropped the ball updating this thread and getting on here. Sorry guys. The past month have been really crazy. But, this truck moves under it's own power now! I'll get this thread up to date now.
Installed zero rate add a leaves in the front to move the front axle forward to center the axle in the wheel well.

The intercooler was up too high in the radiator support and hit the hood latch. We had to cut the lower portion of the support out and add metal so we could get the intercooler low enough to retain the stock hood latch set up. Then we added gussets to the support to add strength to it.

We sanded the bed down and I gave it a quickie paint job with hot rod flatz hugger orange. Man, I was really surprised how well it came out. If I would have gotten more paint, it would look even better! I found all of my trim I've been collecting over the years and installed it all.

Bed back on truck.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...705_015205.jpg
Built stack. I went with 8" because the front cross member in the bed sat so far back that it looked dumb with a 5" stack 4" behind the bed panel. The 8" looks better, and I had the material on hand.

We thrashed on this truck through July 4th. Good Guys started July 5th here in Des moines. We took the Corvette there and went back Friday during the day and got the truck done enough to take it to Good Guys for saturday. It was a lot of work. The truck isn't finished, but it is closer than it ever has been since I've owned it!
On the trailer.

Congrats on all your hard work! Looks very very nice!!!
Thanks. It's nice to see more parts on it than sitting on shelves. But more importantly, it can move it's self around.
I haven't gotten this truck finished, but I'm tying up loose ends here and there when I have time. It had an oil leak which was partly the injection pump, and the tappet cover. Swapped injection pumps and fixed the tappet cover. I finally finished my air filter pipe and put it on. Then I had to remove it and modify it so I can get the wheel wells in. My Dad got tired of looking at my dull wheels and polished them real quick too. :)

I just painted the RH inner wheel well today and I will install it in the morning and then tye up wires and stuff. I'm trying to make it more presentable because I'm taking this to the All Truck Nats in Kansas City this weekend.
And now even more eye candy! You gotta be running out of pieces soon I think!
Have fun at the show.
The old chebbie looks good, Ryan! Have fun in KC!
Thanks guys. Yeah, I think I almost have all the pieces on it. Well not really. :) There's still a lot left to do. Isn't there always?
Last night I got the RH inner fender painted and this morning I installed it. Then I had to beat on it so the air filter would go on. I will have to redo these inner fenders later on.................

The above picture was before I tried shutting the hood. The hood hinge got all up in the air filter's goods so I had to rearrange it again.

I finally drilled the mounting holes for my front bumper reinforcement bars and installed them. This is another part that is different from 2wd to 4wd on these trucks.

Tomorrow I have to install my new headliner and trim, install the sun visors, touch up some scratches, I'm going to try to paint the black on my trim, and clean the bed out. Then it's off to KC!
This truck is so FLIPPIN COOL Enjoy the show Safe Trip
How's this beast coming, Ryan?
It's in limbo right now. I removed the 5 speed trans and am swapping in an auto because I want to be able to do some racing this summer with it. I also am installing front air ride this spring. This has changed my game plan............. I'm now switching front axles to a 79 Ford D60, cross over steering, I'm going to have to pull the cab and engine to do this work. Not what I want to do but I want the air ride on the front. So currently it is sitting with no trans and tcase.
Still awesome work even if it is temporarily down. I'd love to do a build with a diesel and an older truck somewhere down the line.
Thanks. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I've gained a lot of knowledge on what seems to work decent on different trucks from doing all these conversions.
I also forgot I have an oil filter relocator kit that my buddy in Co modified for me. I'm considering putting a tool box door in the RH front lower corner bed side and moving my batteries there to get some weight off the front end. Also, since I'm getting the D60 from him too, he's leaving the upgraded dodge disc brakes he put together for it. That means no more 16" wheels, but awesome braking power.
Right now I've spent a lot of money on the truck but no pic worthy progress. For now I'm going to hold off on the front air ride and get the truck finished and drive it. I purchased 4 new 33 12.5 16.5 BFG AT KO tires, got my billet input shaft and a double deep trans pan for the trans, I got a Lokar locking dipstick, and a Lokar throttle pressure cable. I just got a new American Auto Wire update wire harness for it as well. My goal is to have the bed painted, the stack removed and tail pipes installed, and the truck running and driving enough to take it to Torque Fest May 2nd.
Sounds like your plate is full. Get going & good luck
Here are some pics of the parts and pieces I've been collecting for this truck lately.
Billet grill. It was cheap on another forum. I don't know if I'll put it on the truck or not. Probably not. I'll probably put it in another surround and hang it on the wall.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...326_135822.jpg
Some new knobs and misc. Kind of matches the vintage with a newer bling factor.

Trans dipstick, throttle pressure cable, lower rear bed mouldings, and a trans cooler.

The trans cooler had some damaged fins from shipping. I repaired them the best I could.

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...320_114300.jpg
And finally my new tires. I'm currently stuck trying to decide to go back to steel wheels and hub caps, the current aluminum wheels on it, or a set of aluminum wheels that just have holes like a M/T classic. I'm looking at a set of the M/T's this weekend. I like the steels but the hub caps are always a bear to get off and put on without scratching the wheel or damaging the cap. I'm probably going to stay with aluminum. We shall see.

Time for the shiny stuff, must be getting close!!!!
