John Deere 50

I got another tractor one for you guys. Some may have read a few responses on another thread that this tractor was coming to my house from death row at the tractor salvage yard. It had been sitting in a shed in town for the last 13 years and the owner had no interest in getting it going again. We got it home and I drained the old fuel, cleaned out the carb, sanded up the points a bit and we got it to run again. It didn't run awesome, but not bad for a couple hours work. This tractor is going to replace the G John Deere I had on the box scraper and the power steering and live hydraulics are going to be amazing. My driveway needs maintenance very badly. I hope this works but here is a link to it running for the first time in 13 yrs.

Well of course I couldn't leave well enough alone. The steering shaft spines were very slopping so I thought I better check that out which involved taking the front nose piece off the tractor. The splines were awful so I got a used shaft from the salvage yard, but the female spline would involve major surgery so I'm going to use Bel-Zona which is like a super JB weld to " rebuild " the splines. I've use the stuff before and it is seriously about as hard as steel after it cures.

Once I had the nose off, I thought I might as well take the hood off to get at some wiring behind the dash. Well the hood is bolted to the fuel tank so that whole business came off in one chunk. While that was all off it was a good time to take the rotted out exhaust manifold off and take the carb off again for a good long soaking. Once that was off it was easy to get at the valve cover so I thought I might as well go ahead and set the valves too. I think it's always goofy working on these sideways motors.

Not sure what's going on, the link works for me. I put a regular picture up and just repeat putt-putt-putt-putt out loud while looking at it and that's what it sounds like :LOL:

Well the motors interior looks very clean, or did you clean it out?
Slippery slope ain't it? Let's just take this off to paint it, then since we're there we may as well pull this off for a rebuild and repaint. 8-)

Next thing you realize it's all apart and spread across the shop floor!

LOL, you don't know how close to the truth that is! I backed off on the paint idea, I better run it for more than three minutes to make sure nothing else has to be fixed. I haven't cleaned anything in the motor yet, it's weird, everything is loose and clean on this thing. Even the rear wheel wedges, it only took me about 20 minutes to move one rear wheel in. I'll probably fight the other side for a day-and-a-half LOL

Those splines were pretty well had. Didn't take long for you to have it into half a tractor or so. :LOL:

I got the splines gooped up tonight. I brushed some melted wax on the shaft splines so hopefully it will come loose after after a few taps with a hammer on the steering shaft. This Belzona really is good stuff, when it dries, you need to grind it off. There's no chipping it off. There was some good spines way at the end of the female splines so I smeared a bunch of goop in there and put in the shaft up to the good splines. I'll let you know tomorrow how well it worked.

Well, here's the "new" splines. This stuff is good but I know that it's not going to be as strong as steel. I'm going to slide the shaft forward to catch the little bit of good splines that are left and drill a new roll pin hole in the shaft to keep it there. I'm sure it will last a long time for the amount of use it's going to get.

Those teeth look pretty good.

You'll get a few more miles out of it for sure.

Maybe this will be some motivation for me, my brother in law has his Dad's old "B" sitting in the shop waiting to be redone. He's been hinting at starting on it this summer.
