so your gonna become a tattoo artist ?
You bet:LOL::LOL::LOL:
Side pipes rock. I still have the set I bought for the Vega, but the project got scrapped.
Love side pipes on old Vettes!
You know you want them....joe

Yesterday the big brown truck delivered my latest, new front and rear calipers from Wilwood. I am getting sick and tired of changing out leaky rebuilt stock calipers. I've heard of success "O" ringing stock ones but I decided I'd go with something proven. Trying to keep up with Mr. Spears:LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL: I'll take some pictured when I get the chance. Ian is going to inherit a good stopping and good running Vette.:D
Had any luck getting the upgrades on yet? I love a vette with side pipes!!!
.
Today Richard and I started on the rear brakes. Had a problem with the emergency brake cables, they weren't releasing properly. After spraying the cables with Liquid Wrench they worked better, but still was not releasing all the way. Further investigation revealed the spring that holds tension on the adjusting rod was hanging loose. Got the spring reattached and adjusted the rod and they work as they should.
Since I'm replacing the brake lines as well as the Wilwood calipers I decided to replace the rotors as well. Everything is apart so tomorrow we'll put it back together and I'll take pictures. Us old farts got tired, at least I did, and besides tomorrow is another day.
"..... Us old farts got tired...."
I hear ya Ken. Like some I don't sleep well this time of year, I'm usually out in the shop by 3-4 AM. Usually spend some time planning out the day but by the time the rest of the world wakes up and I can go to town and pick up what I need or start calling people I'm pretty much over it .
Fortunately only 2 current projects currently......looking into a whole house Generator and getting some miles on the 57 to see if any bugs pop up before I make the rip back to Illinois this year (maybe).
Looking forward to seeing the pipes on the vette.

The right front caliper is leaking again so Richard, aka techinsoector1, decided it was time to change them all out. We started on the back since it's the most complicated because of the emergency brake which was also dragging. We should have the rears done today today and time permitting we'll star on the fronts.
Next is the headers and the side pipes and after that eliminating the vacuum headlights with an electric conversion I bought from a member on a Corvette forum. The headlight conversion will eliminate the antiquated vacuum system which at best is a pain in the butt. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but next is a Vintage Air system which will eliminate the rest of the vacuum system. While the dash is out to replace the factory plenum I'll probably update the wiring with a blade fuse block to replace the glass fuse one.
Sounds like you and Richard have some real fun planned out. I'm glad he's at your place. I always enjoy having help if nothing else for the conversation and an excuse for a coffee break.

After a lot of hassle the rear calipers are in. I'm not impressed with the hardware in the package. The rear brake lines that were in the package are nice braided units, but both ends are female when they should have been male. I had a pair of new hard rear brake lines so we adapted them to fit. These Wilwood calipers hook up the brake line in the center while the old calipers hook up at the end. Not very good pictures but I hope you get the idea.Attachment 73742Attachment 73743Attachment 73744

The right front in fact was leaking as can been seen by the streaks on the tire and the small puddle on the floor. The right front caliper is the fourth one, counting the one on the car when I bought it, and all three of the O'Reilly rebuilts have leaked.
Tomorrow I will find some hardware to install the Wilwoods. The Wilwoods attach the brake line in the middle of the caliper so I need an elbow to keep the line out of the coil spring. Should be an adventure.
My granddaughter and i went part hunting to day and we found the part at an industrial supply house.Attachment 73753Attachment 73754Attachment 73755 The fitting, the hose attached to the fitting and the assembly as it will be mounted to the caliper.
It's always a nice feeling when you find just that right part to make the job look nice, but man, it sure is a time eater. At least you got to spend quality time with your granddaughter.
She's been down in the dumps and she is hobbling around with a soft cast on her left ankle since the girl wrecked her car.
My Dakota is an automatic so I let her drive and afterwards we spent some time in the garage. I explained to her how the brakes work and a few other things. She said she'd like to drive the Vette and after she's healed I'll probably let her.
We ended up back in the house and watched some of the replay of the Norwalk Nationals from Sunday and she says she would like to try her hand at the controls of a Top Fueler. I said, why not, go for it. She's pretty bright young lady with a good head on her shoulders and a good attitude.
Got the fronts on tonightAttachment 73756Attachment 73757
The Wilwoods look good. I'll bet they are a bunch lighter than the stockers, too.
Probably the only way to keep the old ones from leaking would be to have the bores fitted with sleeves. I know there used to be companies that specialized in sleeving antique MC's and other brake parts. The Wilwoods were probably cheaper than getting that work done, though.
Many years ago when my Dad and I had a machine shop, I fitted some oversize pistons to a Corvette caliper. I don't know where the guy got the bigger pistons, but I know the calipers where tough to setup for the boring job. I didn't make nearly enough on that job!
They are considerably lighter, but what I really like is there is not a dedicated caliper for each wheel, just front and rear. Had a bit of a problem with the hard lines and I'll replace them later.
Got the fronts mounted and bled but something at the right rear is rubbing. I'm suspecting the parking brake assembly though I won't rule out anything. The rear has half shafts with two u-joints and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the u-joints is bad. Hopefully I can get it jacked up today and with the rear wheels off have a look.
Dang it. There's always something! LOLOL
After consulting the local guru, techinspector1, it was determined the noise is the new pads adjusting to the new rotors. I'll drive it awhile, locally, to make sure.
Next on the agenda is either the headers and sidepipes or the headlight conversion to electric. The headlight conversion is mostly plug and play and will eliminate quite a bit of the vacuum mess associated with C3 Corvettes.
Come on Ken, SIDE PIPES FIRST!!! Who needs headlights (lol)...
I have a set of nice side pipes sitting in my shed. Probably should have returned them when the project got canceled.
Side pipes and guitars, you can never have too many!!
Since it's cooled off a bit I've been able to get to work on the Vette. Yesterday, with help from my grandson Ian, I got the headers installed. The right side sits way too close to the starter so last night I ordered one of the newer PMGR starters and that should solve that problem. In the meantime I'll reterminate the spark plug wires. When I first installed them I left them long in anticipation of installing headers.
Today I'll start on that and also try to figure out how I'm going to mount the side pipes.
The new starter won't be here until next week so after I get the plug wires done and the side pipes mounted off comes the hood for the electric headlight conversion.
It sure feels good to finally get some work done and I'll post some pictures later.
The headers are on, but the E-3's are too long to hook up the wires. I had to bite the bullet and eat my words as I purchased a set of shorty Accell plugs. Said I'd never have anything on a car from Accell, but until I find something better they will have to do.
Also got everything out for the electric headlight conversion which I'll work on until the starter and plugs come in. Also have to shorten the plug wires and waiting for plug looms from Taylor.Attachment 73837Attachment 73838Attachment 73839

I use Champion C59YC 792, same size as Accel shorties and a lot cheaper.
