I found a 402 BB with a TH400 from a 1971 pick up with low miles . It was on the Craigs list for $1200 But the guy came down to $1000 . I was thinking of buying it but I passed on it . It's gone now
i am going to be needing a big block for my upcoming project thats still about 2-4 months away from being started but hey who says ya cant start early, i want a 427 but whos got that kinda $$$ yes its ture im gonna build a big block CAN YA BELIVE IT!? somebody call ripleys
I built some 396/402 BB Chevy street engines . The last one went into a 1967 Camaro SS . The car was a stock 396 car . And the guy wanted the engine to look stock . I used the stock manifolds but did a little pocket porting and install a larger camshaft . That car real ran strong . If it was mine I would install a high rise with a 750 Holley and a set of headers . I did install a 2400 hole shot converter . And the last thing would be a 373 gear the car had a 331 posi rear .
I have not built the 396/402 engines for a about a year now.Quote:

i just sold 2 1973 454`s with turbo 400 trans for 1500 bucks .. one in a truck that the buyer drove away in .. i could`nt find a body to build anything out of .. 69 chevelle or 70 camaro .. i already wish i had them back .. now i want a hotrod ...
The last 402 bare block which was my core with splayed caps and ARP bolts went out the door for $965.
This included hot tank, mag.,bore and hone with a BHJ plate, line bore, line hone, with cam bearings, galley plugs, freeze plugs and painted.
The 1971 402 that came out of the pick up truck . Is It the same block like the cars used ? Are the 427/454 HD truck engines the only tall block BB Chevy engines ? A guy had a 1974 Suburban with a 454 . It was the tall block . He said I could have it . I know that they can be built up . But the intake and push rods and what other parts are not the same ?
396/402 blocks are all the same cars and light truck they did make a short deck and tall deck 10.200 /9.800 427 they made only a short deck 454 9.800 deck blocks
The tall deck blocks are the 366,427 blocks.Quote:

I don't know of any tall deck 454 blocks.
Yes,the intake,push rods are longer.
The block it's self is .400 taller or 10.20 tall vs. the 396,402,427,454 or 9.80 tall.
I have built a bunch of the "poor mans" stroker big block Chevy with the tall deck block.
A sonic test is needed.
Bore 4.350 X stroke 4.500.
These make a 535.

I got one of their 500hp 454's. 60 over with Merlin oval port heads. Balanced and blue printed. 5 years ago, it was around $4K. Now I noticed it was $5600.
gm did on the last mark 4 they made 427 tall decks were cut out on the bottom of the block like a 454 for more room and this block with a 4.500 crank and h beam rods need very little work for the crank to swing
Were the 427 Truck engines 4 bolt main blocks ? And can you buy a good high rise intake if you were to build on ? And is the Distributor the same as the lower BB Chevys ? Like to know Thank's
I see it comes with re-con. rods and a re-con crank.Quote:

Some after-market manifolds will let you run the std. sbc/bbc dist.
Here is the Edelbrock super victor that works with a 4500 Dominator . The first on is the #2927 For the standard deck . The next one is the #2916 for the tall deck 427 . COOL
i have used the vic intake on many builds
well i should of said, how much does it genrally cost to get that much out of a big block, cant be that expensive can it?
the last 496 i built was hyd roller cam long block all new parts with cast steel crank hyper pistons long block was around 3700. with out block or head casting using BHJ tru-deck tq plate hone and re work 781 heads with 219/188 valves
My friend had a 1968 Lemans all steel . With a 496 and Brodix heads with a Big flat tappet solid lifter cam . And a Victor intake with a Dominator carb . He ran a TH400 with a 4200 stall and a 456 gear . With a small spray kit that car ran high 9s . One time it pulled the front end up so high that when it came down it smashed up the oil pan real bad .
i had a 468 soild roller cam 13to1 in my gto that would send the front end in the air on the street with a set of iron heads i did some work to:3dSMILE:
if i cant build a 500 horse and a equal or more amount of torque for under 3500 im wasting my time :d
For $3500 Bucks ! I can do that with a Pontiac 455 .
how about using a 400 ? :D
id like to build a 427 although prices ahve gone up, cant you take a 396 crank in a 454? ithought that made 427? man i need to do some homework on this big stuff, so used to tiny mouses
That may take some doing . How about a Pontiac 428 I can do the 500 HP with it :) COOLQuote:

the crankshaft on the 366/396/402 and 427 all have the 3.76 stroke and are internally balanced . The 454 cranks are 4.00" stroke and are externally balanced . On a 396/402 It's possible to go all the way to the 4.251" bore and use standard 427 pistons . But do not use 454 pistons . They have 0.130" less compression height . But boring a 396/402 to 4.251" is risky and may not work . But the truck blocks have thicker cylinder walls and can be bored 0.125" over . Like a 283 COOL
well i thought there was a way to make your own 427 by switching cranks? yes i ahve seen alot of guys take 454 .125 over and .100 over
On the 454 from what I was told .060 Max . The 369/402 and the truck blocks can go more . I did know a guy that made a 440ci out of a 427 BB . But today with all the stroker kits I am sure you can make a much larger engine out of a 396 .
3700 was all parts and machine work and the price to long block it with a roller and all new part put it on paper and get back to me you would be hard press to copy it for that:LOL: Tango who care s about a 455  he said a 402 and they cost abit more for pistons and stock parts would be less then a 496 and alot less cid and the very old tall decks could go over 100 over but not the newer mark 4 tall decks i would not go over 060 and if so it would need to be sonic checked. the 396 truck block are not any thicker then the car blocks the very old 65/67 396/375 hp blocks could go to 4.250+ bore you will have a very hard time finding one .i have bored old early 70s mark 4 454 080 +over before i would go that on a 396 and the 69 396/375 hp i would not go 060 on the one i hadQuote:

the hardest part is to put the big block in the chevy II i have done headers for them cars with big blocks in them but 11 should not be to hard in a small ligth car and could be done with a iron head 402 but i would like to see a 454 easier to find the tall deck just would be to hard to fit in the carQuote:

car is going to have straight axele <no worrys for clearance :D > erick, BUDGET :D :D just help me build an regular bbc. id be up for a 468 . but the goal is a 427 i sware i hear of guy swapping cranks and making there own poor mans 427 ??
well i concur with my colleague in the rat race business**) if you do this i have alot of very nice used parts i can help you out on like roller cams hippo crower roller lifters and psi springs all this stuff i can save you big$$ onQuote:

well that would be cool, as of right now the car is being kept at a realtives house till spring when i can do some cleaning and bring it home, but taking notes and learning and collecting parts will make it much easier when it comes home everything will be here at once. like i said, 11's are the goal for when i do wanna go tear it up but id also like it to be able to handle some decent road trips, can you do that on pump gas pat? i just dont know where to start. i keep referring to the older bbc's cause you know me, im a nostalgic :D
