I was referred to an article which says that BIG O's fuel standards of 35.5 MPG is going to kill the industry.
this is LAUGHABLE!
Why? Because I am currently driving an 87 chevette which gets 31-42 MPG depending on my driving habits. We are talking about a BONE STOCK 22 year-old car which gets 31 MPG, and the industry can't better that by 4.5MPG?
How sad is it, that in 22 years, the 'industry' hasn't improved efficiency by a mere 13%?

C.A.F.E. stands for corporate AVERAGE fuel economy. that means a car like yours will have to get about 60 mpg if you want to sell p/u trucks vans and oh ya high performance vehicles......ted
my 89 mercury topaz gets 39 mpg .. my 09 toyota gets 30 .. go figure ..

Yep---but that chevvette fits that group of cars that detroit built that no one wanted to buy---the nerve of engineering to make a car that cut out the air conditioning when it needed the power to turn the steering wheels---they had a valve in the power steering line that cut off the ac compressor
And of course all those pick ups and vans---look around , they all have ladder racks or tool boxes, do you know how much extra room a BMW driver texting on his blackberry needs to give them in traffic???
My best mph car was 92 zo7 corvette--28mpg at 100mph but my diesel ford truck at 19mph pulls that down to 23 .5
my 1960 ford falcon got 29-30mpg all day long with that nice little 144ci straight six. you werent getting there fast, but you were getting there cheap.
Oh and if you go to www.fueleconomy.gov it has a list of almost all cars back to the 80`s and gives the rated and tested mpg. pretty weird that some of the 80`s boats got better mileage than todays cars.

The Honda Insight, a Hybrid, is suppose to get about 43 mpg on the hiway.:D
But my 1986 Honda CRX HF, a non Hybrid 4 banger, got 54 hiway, 43 city. :eek:

The new Insight, weighs in @ 2700 lbs, my CRX weighed only 1700 lbs. The new one costs over $20k, mine was only $6k.

the problem is that pesky little word AVERAGE try and average those little s#&&boxes in with a bunch of f150 f250 f350 f450's and and see what cafe avg. you come up with. this is just a way to dictate the cars you can drive the market place should do that you should have the freedom (YA DID YOU FORGET THAT WORD) to buy what you want and can afford to drive.....ted

I see people getting in the mid 20's with their Chevy II's and even a wagon like my 63 Chevy II wagon. Of course they have a straight six and overdrive tranny. Mine has a 327 but will soon have overdrive and I am hoping to get low 20's. I think it's funny that they blame old cars for the ozone layer and global warming. People get so brainwashed with that junk it's ridiculous.
Add to that the European Ford gets 60+ mpg on diesel but won't be available in the US! The reason hybrids are supported by environmentalists is because getting higher mpg from burning fuel generates CO2 which is a "poison gas" (plants love it!). Scientifically I think there IS slight global warming going on but this suppression of fossil fuels will harm the US economy greatly while large populations in China and India continue to generate a LOT of CO2. I am for solar panels when the day is bright but in winter in most of the northern parts of the US it is folly to suppress coal as a fuel and natural gas which can be used for trucks at least, but of course burning anything generates CO2. We bought a load of rocks on a pallet for my wife's garden today and they loaded the pallet onto our little Ranger pickup with a pallet truck fueled by natural gas! The Ranger burns gasoline, of course!

The co2 produced does not come from the fuel you burn it comes fron burning o2 oxygen we convert it to co2 plants and trees convert to o2 so the question nobody wants to anser is why aren't we running out of o2
My '90 S-15 gets 30 mpg with it loaded with stuff. It's a V6, My '87 Mustang gets 25 mpg it's a V8. Our '65 Chevelle use to get 25 with a V8 in the '70's.
Global warming is a bunch of CRAP, it started in 1850 the last time and has been warming since, Not because of the 70's to date. Check your history and you'll see that the earth has one every so many years, after it has a mini ice age to cool it's self down. People need to check history, Not listen to the politics! They don't know which hand to wipe with!

For man to imagine that we are significant enough to provide any impact of lasting consequence to the Earth is nothing short of laughable. Many of us here are old enough to remember the great "global cooling" scare of the early 1970's (chronicled by Newsweek - see article at http://www.denisdutton.com/cooling_world.htm).
The New York Times has been warning of climate change for over a hundred years, but can't decide if the killer will be a freeze or a heat wave (see http://www.businessandmedia.org/spec...fireandice.asp).
We certainly need to be good stewards of what we have been entrusted - but realize in the "big picture" we are but dust mites in the corner of the universe. I for one, want to live my life to the fullest and enjoy the years that God sees fit to give me. To love those close to me, share with those less fortunate (through other than government sponsored welfare programs!) and not worry to much about the things that are so obviously beyond my control.
That said - I do vote and am more than willing to stand for what I believe to be true and just -don't mess with my family, don't tell me where I can go to church, don't tell me what I can or can't drive and know that the guns in my house are ready to use to defend what I hold dear.

glen I agree you and those links you found, lest we forget another 70's b.s. scare of acid rain is killing the vegetation there will be no plants left to make oxygen all the crops will fail everybody on earth will die from lack of o2 or starve. but the caught N.B.C. doctoring phony pictures. and gave up on that one. then save the wales said all the oceans in the world would die no more fish we will all die in ten yrs. then we had the hole in the ozone because you had a/c in your car the hospitals would be over run treating skin cancer we will all die but we changed to 134 but only here no other country wanted to burden the people with that farce. but were always that this this is a CRISIS. ( of course it always comes with the by line children the poor and minorities hit worst ) OK sorry for rambling must have stood in the hot sun too long .....ted

Yes you can build a 100 MPG car w/10 HP, but people want to travel at 35 or better.
Obama wants $6 a gallon gas so the new "green" GM will suceed. I'll buy Ford. Of course we still want performance and don't want to drive smart cars. Europe has been living with $3+ gas for over 20 years and they do optimize small engines, but I want a BBC in a gas guzzler with $1 a gallon gas, but it's not worth it for America to pump oil if oil is cheap, hell we can't even get it out of the ground as proven during the $4 a gallon days. I guess the cold war is over and we don't have to protect are reserves anymore, and the worst part is they will find alternative fuels and all of our reserves will be worthless.
I save gas all week...drive to the shop, drive home. Local parts stores deliver parts, other places deliver lunch.... An ugly little Lumina we "inherited" from a tow gets reasonably good mileage, I spend about $15.00 to go back and forth to work for 2 weeks.... if I'm working in my garage, it's 20 steps out the back door.......
Don't even tell me we can't play with our 3 or 4 MPG on E-85 big block Fords on the weekend!!!!!!! (and I don't even have time to ride along most weekends:CRY::CRY:) Oh yeah, the diesel we tow with does about 16 mpg and only gets driven on weekends...Oh yeah, bio-diesel in the toter.... I do my share....leave me alone!!!!:LOL::LOL::LOL:
Oh yeah,,,and with all the talk on saving fuel, the state won't let me drive my electric golf cart back and forth to the shop?????:confused::confused::confused:
Dave, Here we can drive ATV's and golf carts on the road, but I think I'm the only one that drives a golf cart. I raised mine total of 9" and put larger tires on it. I still have to put the headlights & tail lights in. (not the cheap fog type lights) and some other toys on it.

I don't know what kind of "mileage" this golf cart gets, but sure would be fun to drive. Not far from where I live, there is a retirement community called "King City" where it is legal to drive golf carts on all roads with speed limits less than 35MPH. Let me tell you, this baby will definitely keep up with the traffic. While this is a stock photo, the two old gals I saw in one of these were having a great time and getting a lot of "thumbs up" from everyone who saw this thing. For about $4,000 - you too could be driving a Hummer golf cart!
Kewl stuff!!!! The speed limits on the streets of this berg of a town are generally 20 mph, I've added brake lights, directionals, and a horn to make it legal and still no dice..... However, if it was a gas engine instead of an electric motor, everything would be fine and I could drive it in town........
Government is the best organization I've ever seen that can constantly contradict itself, waste lots of other peoples money, operate at a financial loss year after year, and still continue to function!!!!!!:LOL::LOL::LOL:
