Why today?

Today we celebrate (or should) our National Independence. If you've never, or haven't in a long time, read the Declaration of Independence, here's a copy of the text: http://www.earlyamerica.com/earlyame.../doi/text.html really won't take that long.

Jefferson used the terms "usurpation" and "tyranny" with some regularity. Note that much of the text was a listing of "charges" of tyranny against the then King of England, but could just as easily apply to any political power group/individual. He and the other signators of the Declaration understood the laws of tyranny;

Any power that can be abused will be abused.

Abuse always expands to fill the limits of resistance to it.

If people don't resist the abuses of others, they will have no one to resist the abuses of themselves, and tyranny will prevail.

Good thought, Uncle Bob...but I'm not sure any of it matters much anymore...

The usual response is either self righteous indignation or apathy.... The principles of States Rights have long since been sold out to the feds.... Individualism and personal responsibility has been replaced with "what's in it for me" or "not my job".

People geneerally seem to fall into 2 camps;

A. The __________ Party will fix it. (Insert your favorite party)

B. Nothing we can do about it

oh yeah, the "fringe element" camp who believe everything is fine!!!!


So, we'll just move along playing the blame game and probably do nothing....but this time next year we'll think about it some more.....

Now I believe I'll just go hide in the shop and build Hot Rods!!!!

Maybe every elected official before taking office should have to read, and be able to recite the (Declaration of Independence) at any time he, or she is asked if they know, and understand what they have read.

Good thought Richard. Unfortunately Politician is the new word for selfserving. Democrat or Republican, by time they get to office they are bought and paid for, and like many have stated looking after the interests of what will keep them in office financially, not the people who elected them.
Still I'm proud to live here, and appreciate the sacrifices of my ancestors to get here and work to establish themselves here. I thank soldiers for their sacrafices to keep us as safe as they do. I don't think things will get better however. Most people don't have the work ethic our ancestors had, the drive to improve their kids lives from where they came from. People are afraid of hard work( I mean this in a very general sense as they are a lot of hardworking americans, right here on this site!). I used to address elders or teachers as Mr. or Mrs., sir or mame, nowdays kids address us without respect. When kids do, I compliment them and their parents, making sure to let them know their hard work is appreciated.
It seems most young folks want what took a lifetime for their parents to achieve, right now. Credit cards and filing bankruptcy makes this possible, and teaches them financial irresponsibility does pay off. If we made people work off their debt, we might reinstate some responsibility. I see people on here work towards saving up for their next project, trading services for parts, and finding creative solutions that are financially responsible to get a car of their dreams. I enjoy this site for these reasons. I think the only way to make a change is by example through our own personal actions, that hopefully will lead others by example.
I look foward to celebrating the fourth today, and wish everyone a happy Independance Day.

as for the hard times that we all have seen and are loved ones that have sacrafice to keep us safe over the years . for all the hard working americans that made this country great. it seams like i am watching as things go to hell .i would love to know What the elected offcials have sacrafice for the good of this country .it just seams to me as there driving us down the road to hell ???? and we can not get out !!!!!

Steve, you made several good points. First the politicians when they get in office they start campaigning for their next election. Another point is about the young not having respect for their elders. Another some people didn't have to give up anything to reap the benefits of our present society, a young girl gets pregnant she is taken care of what's up with that. When I was in high school, a guy got his girl friend pregnant they got married, that's how some good people came into this World by them doing the right thing. Another some people feel like it's a competitive game to get as many girls to have babies as possible.

Just the other day I picked up my Grandson, we were going around the lake talking having a good time. I look in the rear view mirror and to my surprise I see the light turning on top of a police car, I pulled over went through the license, registration, insurance. The officer asked if I knew why he pulled me over? I said no, he said I was going 35 in a 20 mph zone. I thought it's been close to 40 years since the police have stopped me. The officer asked if I was not paying attention maybe talking? I said yes I'm having the Grandson for the day, and we were excited.

The Police officer said he was giving me a warning, and as I kept calling him sir, he said I was setting a good example for my Grandson.

I'am not so pessimistic. I believe in the human spirit and more importantly the American spirit. That has made this the most successful, prosperous, most productive, and highest standard of living country in the history of the world is that spirit, and freedom, and capitalism. No matter what this bunch of people along with the media try to sell you this is still the best country in the world. If we can limit the destruction this group wants to do. If we can turn it around and GET GOVERNMENT OUT OF THE WAY freedom, capitalism, and the American spirit will prevail. The American spirit is in our d.n.a.....ted

All the rest of you, it's so refreshing to see that people still believe in this wonderful country we have and just pray we come out of this. Sometime I just don't know if it's possible.

Ted I agree. I do have hope, just don't see things changing very rapidly. Also worry about this new generation preceding us. I still would rather live here than anywhere else...well maybe a little italian villa in Tuscany, with some good vino.. naw that's just a good visit!:D
