The question of “what’s my car worth” has been around since the first owner of a Model A wanted to sell or trade his rig off for another one. I think we need to remember that cars are a lot like houses in that an “appraisal” can give us a probable point of departure for negations on an actual sale. I have a friend who used to appraise only Mustangs and he was very good at it. More often than not, people would buy his services and then complain that he didn’t appraise the car correctly. What they were really saying is that they wanted a certified appraisal to be higher so they could use it in justification for a sale or to have an inflated value for insurance purposes.
My son has a 1971 Chevy half-ton pickup - long bed, 350 automatic, real clean but nothing real special. Three years ago, he was hit by an individual who had lost control of their vehicle and come across the center line and it was, by their own admission, one hundred percent the other driver’s fault. Damage was estimated at $2,500. When the other party’s insurance called, they informed me that they “would probably total the truck due to its age.” I insisted that they have an independent appraisal - to which they agreed. Their appraiser came back with a value “between 12 and $15,000” and they repaired the truck. Is the truck worth $15K? Well, it was on that day.
As to the particular case in-point here, the vehicle is worth what you’re willing to pay. I am not a ’32 guy, however, I agree with other postings here and would say that the value is greatly inflated. I really like your car and believe it to be worth a lot more that the ’32 in question. In his add he states:
“The engine is a 327 punched 60 with 11 1/2 to 1 pistons. The cam is a crowller with a lot of lift and duration. It has an old school three 2s with 3 rochester carbs and progressive linkage. Double hump heads 202 valves. Its too much for the car and for the fuel of today but the new owner can detune it if its to much for him or her.”
This scares me a bit and I read – “engine will need some work – maybe a lot” (and I don’t know what a “crowller cam” is, probably a “Crower” would be my guess?). I guess I’m skeptical. I go for one of DA34’s in a heartbeat as the quality oozes from every square inch of his creations.
