Another hot rod stolen!!!!!!!!!!!

This was posted on the HAMB and I thought I'd post it here in case anyone sees this car. Here is the story from the owner:

My '32 Roadster was stolen last nite (1/30/2011) from the parking lot of the Sheraton hotel at the LA County Fairplex. I was attending the GNRS and staying at the Sheraton. The car is a semi-gloss black, heavily pin-striped, steel-bodied (Rod Bods), high-boy roadster with a 6-71 blown small block Chev, Wanlass/Rodwell windshield, black leather and aluminum paneled interior. License number BERBNZ. (Bare Bones)

There's plenty of distinguishing characteristics on this car which make it unmistakable. I've included some photos. If someone is offering you a screamin' deal on a blower setup (Mooneyham), a steel '32 roadster body, Chevy small block motor, 700-R4 transmission, 9-inch rear end, American Racing Torque Thrusts and tires, a Wanlass windshield, or any kind of parts, be advised - they could be hot.

A thief and a liar have a special place in HELL awaiting their arrival :mad: It's sad to say but I would guess that real nice Hot Rod is either not in the USA anymore or not in one piece anymore.:CRY:

will keep eyes open for this one. Boy it really sucks that people poor their life into the car only to has some worthless human being take it away!

The question I have is, how do you get away with something like this. I mean, here is a loud, supercharged hot rod, not as invisible as something like a mini van, and it gets removed from the hotel parking lot and taken away without anyone noticing.:confused: What do they do, push it away and then put it on a flatbed or trailer and haul it away? Hotwire it? It just amazes me that these things can happen.

Like I've said in previous threads, it is getting so we don't like to attend overnight events any more, and why we stayed in a motorhome this year at Turkey Run, so our rods were right next to us all night.

The motor home idea with a dog who barks when people get to close is a great idea. Making it harder to get to is always a good deterant. Unfortunately if thieves want something bad enough, they'll usually get it. I guess a hidden kill switch, car alarm and lojack are about the best you can do other than hiring a car bodyguard!

One of the best suggestions I saw on another forum was to hire off duty police officers for the night to watch over a group of cars. They said for between $ 25-$35 per hour, four hour min, you can hire one. Wouldn't be practical for one guy to hire a guard, but if a group of rodders staying in the same place chipped in, then it would be. Certainly cheaper than losing your car, even if it IS insured to the hilt.

it has happened to me !

not to sound like i am a criminal ,BUT i can hotwire that car in less than 2 minutes ! 2 ft piece of wire and a pocket knife . so if i can do it a criminal can sure do it .
then a criminal drives into a enclosed trailer and drive it off !

Yes, I think I remember you losing a car and trailer......maybe the truck too? I was sorry to hear about that one, did you get anything back?

We just had a breakin near our shop the other night. I go at about 6:30 every night to feed the stray cats living near the shop and I left to go back home at about 7:10. A girl arrived at the Ballet Studio a couple of door down from my shop at 7:15, went in, and when she came back out at 7:35 her windows and the windows of a couple other cars were smashed out. I guess they got some purses and other stuff the students had left in the cars. I just wish I had spent a little more time with the cats because I might have kept it from happening or caught them.

We have alarms and other measures to protect the shop, but are considering cameras that we can monitor from home. It's a shame what you have to do to protect your stuff any more. :mad::mad: One of these goofballs are going to meet up with the wrong guy who shoots first and asks questions later.

I know he's takin this pretty hard, but he'll build a better and more BAD ASS32 fer sure.

I wouldn't think it would take more than a few seconds to start it and drive it off everything is out in the open couple wires with aligator clips :eek: I don't know what prevenitive measures he took but they weren't enough. I agree if they are caught hanging by there jewels would seem fair.

I guess you guys are right, there are people out there, even 12 year olds, who can start any car with a screwdriver. I had a car I bought one time to build a drag car and didn't get the keys, it took me most of the day with chisels and drills to get the ignition to pop out, yet some kid from the wrong part of town could have probably done it in a few seconds. :( Wish they would put that intelligence toward something productive, and legal.

Fact is,that a experienced car thief could walk up to a car like that at night,at a big event,and hot wire it and drive away without anyone giving him a second look....unless the owners friends are around...I would think that,at some of your events over there,where you have a thousand or more hotrods,not everyone is gunna know who has just dropped into it,and as you guys have said,,it only takes a minute to hotwire something,,,the thief is NOT going to sneak around while hes doing it..Big gonads,just gunna walk up to it,jump in and treat it like his own...and drive away..:(:(

For a carb'd engine and mechanical fuel pump it's pretty simple to hotwire the coil and crank it. An electric fuel pump adds a level of complexity, and EFI and the ECU add another, at least it seems that way to me. What I fear more than the guy with a length of wire and a screwdriver is the quiet flatbed with a winch.... Not much but LoJack or GPS, a laptop with tracking software and a loaded handgun to fight him ;).

Thats sad, hope they catch them, my chevelle was stolen back in `71, 15 minutes after I had walked in the house it was gone, fast foward to `93, loose lips sink ships someone started braggin about this particular chevelle, well you know the old bag/and beat routine, this guy walks with a serious limp now, never knew what happened....

And the Chevelle was back?? Or the Chevelle was long gone, and the guy was braggin' about past sins?? Regardless, it he took it maybe the limp reminds him....
