I see a lot of different breeds in her. Most of them have been mentioned.

Whats her disposition? If she is approachable she may turn out to be a good adoption dog. Don't let her by your kids until you're sure she can be trusted - or your dogs/cats.

Take her to the vet to get checked out, vaccinated and checked for parasites.

Had a dog that was a Pit cross. Lady was part Chow, Sheltie, and Pit-bull. A great family pet that was wonderful around people... all people. She just enjoyed meeting new people and was calm around them (didn't jump up or get over excited).

Lady was NOT a social dog. She did not like other dogs getting in our yard nor did she like a dog walking with their owner out in front of the place. She would fight them and drew blood many times before we could get her off of the other dog. For that reason, she was always tied up, leashed, etc. when she was outside. No amount of training ever got her away from her blood lines of protection. She is gone now and we have not replaced her. Don't know if we will either... but I just wanted to point out that she was a great pet, just not around other dogs.... (oh... she was GREAT around our cats...)

I agree with Shine!!! I've had aggressive dogs, most notably a chow/lab longhaired mix. Best dog I've ever had - but didn't take to ALL strangers - seems to be able to read human character very well.

It won't take long to determine how aggresive she will be. Just be careful with small children, especially toddlers until you determine her character.

I've also known Labs with wide jaws/head like that.

Taking in an adult dog can be a crapshoot, especially if you have kids in the house. I love animals but also realize that some pets can be unpredictable, even if you have known them since they were very young. I hear stories all the time about how pit bulls are such wonderful, loving pets, and maybe some are, but they didn't get their reputation without some cause. Some communities have even made them illegal to own.

That is a nice looking dog you pictured and my first thoughts were that she has some Border type dog in her, from her looks. Just be very careful, especially with kids around.......it only takes a second for a dog to snap and hurt or kill a small child.

Geezer 69 and R Pope have got it right in my opinion. Heeler/Border collie cross with perhaps Labrador thrown in too.
I think R Pope is correct too when he says she might have whelped; it sure looks like she's in milk.

No milk, just well used teets from the past.

She's coming up on the back porch to eat now
but still won't let you approach her.

Picked up a big bag of dry dog food and she's
eating that pretty good - along with all left overs
that I put out there.

She is shy for a reason. Especially if you are feeding her. Maybe mistreated at one time. In a rural setting no kids around she may end up being your best friend. If she is let to roam there is a liability involved. Some home owners insurance companies are asking if you have a dog these days. I hope she turns out OK!

Update on my Canine Project:
Well, it appears that she has either gotten snake bit
or some B*****D has shot her in the right shoulder.

You can see in this picture that her shoulder is swollen
pretty good and he appetite is good. Yesterday she was
limping but there didn't seem to be any swelling like it
is this morning.


I can't tell if the dark place is dried blood or just from
her constantly licking it. I have seen no "red" blood at
all but the swelling is in the entire leg this morning.


After she ate, she walked around to the front of the
house where I keep a bowl of water out for all the
creatures and critters. She can put a little weight on
it but not very much. Guess I'd better move the water
bowl 'cause she's standing in the Wiffy's flower bed.


She is not as distant as she was but getting close
enuff to touch her is out of the question. We don't
have Animal Control Dept in BFB so, if she gets down
to where she can't walk around or eat or drink, then
I may have to do the unthinkable. It would be out of
compassion and very quick, if I do. Damn, I hate this
part of being an animal lover.

i know you'll give her every chance to recover mego. but yep, the time mite come.id hate to do that too but sometimes its the best way out for em.

it may take a woman to get close. i have seen dogs that just dont like men but do like women . she needs to get to the vet somehow. i feel for you. it is a heartbreaking thing to do. i have an old lab that is in her last season.

Thanks Gents, it ain't looking too good - - - - - she came up to drink again and I got close enuff to see the wound real good and it looks like a gun shot wound. There is a large hole and cavity there on her shoulder similar to an exit wound of a small caliber piece. To top it all off, she is now under my rear deck and I sure hope she doesn't die under there. If she comes out again and gives me a good clear shot, I think the best thing to do is put her out of her misery. I wish I knew who shot her - - - - - I would leave him a trophy of his poor marksmanship on his doorstep !

If she wasn't so damned spooky and afraid, I would get the Vet out here but I can't afford a house call, tranq gun shot plus putting her to sleep.

she will lick a hole in a snake bite or other small wound. tuff call. glad i dont have to make it. is there a rescue place around ? sometimes they will come get them .
