I think that perhaps the FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) may be the answer, with hydrogen as the fuel, derived from Natural Gas. Some of the prototypes since 2009 have gone over 250 miles between refueling, much better than having to recharge batteries every 100 miles, but still not where it needs to be. One has to wonder if some closet scientist might not find the answer to having a range of say, 1000 miles with efficiency in the 75% to 80% range, good acceleration up to a max speed of maybe 90 mph (120 for police applications??), and capable of being re-fueled in less than ten minutes from a readily available fuel source - that is, already readily available, and lower in price than gasoline, with a sufficient prize dangled out there to be claimed. Throw in a set of lithium batteries for backup in case of fuel cell problems, and you might have the bases covered. I kind of like the idea, and I for sure like it better than our government handing out millions to snake oil salesmen who happened to be big campaign contributors.
Fox news just showing OBama voting in Chicago---What do you think it cost????? Saw a c5a or something like it landing at Dupage County airport yesterday afternoon--with the Marine One choppers---NOW, they just flew over the house on way back to airport---I got outside in time to see two of them, sometimes there are 3 or more----plus his armored cars and escorts---couldn't he of just mailed his ballot in??????????
Ya' know, that could have been done to create a valuable "campaign moment", him and Michelle walking out to the corner mailbox with their advance ballots, placing the stamps on the corner, and then dropping them into the box with plenty of time to spare, along with a message, "I just saved the American taxpayer's $300,000 by mailing in my ballot instead of taking Air Force One to Chi-Town..... Opportunity missed I'd say!!
The plane that is used to carry the president, which is typically a Boeing 747, costs the Air Force $179,750 per hour to operate, according to a new Congressional Research Service report. This is just the cost of Air Force One (designated as such only when the POTUS is on board).
Typically, there are other costs associated with the planes that are required for the entourage of a president. Air National Guard planes also fly approach and take-off sorties. It costs (per aircraft) $20,516 per hour to fly the F-15 and $9,366 to fly the F-16, according to data published by Defense Department comptroller’s office.
So yuppers – probably cost the taxpayers $250K each way for Mr. Obama to come to Chicago to cast his vote. It’s a bit more than a first class stamp. Probably the annual salary with benefits of five well qualified K12 teachers.
Well, certainly not the only incumbent ever to travel home to vote...... Remember lots of "photo ops" of incumbent Presidents doing that... Just more wasted tax dollars that the government doesn't seem to give a hoot about... DDSS
Nope, definitely not the only incumbent to make a show of traveling home to vote, and will not be the last. My point is that it was still an opportunity lost, IMO. Seems that there is no accountability for money spent in any political office anymore, again, IMO, and that crosses party lines! We had a mini-scandal about politicians "overlooking" their personal property taxes on luxury jets that were owned by their businesses. Caused a mini uproar, and some scrambling to write checks to cover past sins.
Just politics as usual, cut everybody's program except mine.....
Nothing new there either, I guess.....
Vote out ALL the incumbents a couple times, maybe they'd get the message??
Andrew Jackson supposedly said "they should hold elections every year so all the fools could have a shot at it"
Also, Glenn, the White House press "corpse" goes with him. I made my company's air travel arrangements for them in the late sixties and early seventies. At that time the White House had its own travel office staffed by very capable professionals. I don't know how corpse transportation is run now. BUT ....... when the poorest excuse for a man to ever hold the presidency took office, his wife (her name now escapes me) accused the travel office of financial misdeeds of various kinds. The staff was dismissed. White House travel was turned over to a travel agency that was, quite coincidentally, owned by a friend of hers.
The impeached aforementioned "poorest excuse" is now a venerated Elder Statesman and his wife is now Secretary of state.
Yeah.
Jim
Don't forget that on this trip they had several stops---each stop would of had an advance party of secret service, plus C5As hauling in choppers and armored limos----and its probably a little over 2 hours Chicago to Andrews AFB so you will be well over one/half million dollars just for AF ONE-------
If they could (or were even interested) in eliminating all the fraud, waste, and abuse in the Federal Government and apply that money to the deficit, betcha we'd see that big number go down in a hurry!!! Seeing as how the one's who benefit most from the fraud, waste, and abuse would be the one's to end it I guess we don't have to wait for that to ever happen!!!!!!
You also forgot the ambulance, the helicopters, the black Suburbans along with the multitude of secret service personnel plus the spare Air Force 1 that isn't too far away, either a 747 or a smaller airplane. Obumbler has been here three times in the past couple of years - and that motorcade BS will tie up an entire city plus screw up our pretty small Albany International(?) Airport for hours - talk about lost time/costs(millions of $$) for many thousands of others caught up in the mess
As a Kiwi, all of this has no personal impact on me.
But I seem to remember...
Not long ago some the auto industry were asking your government to bail them out of financial trouble.
Some of the auto executives had the temerity to turn up in their corporate jets; and were told to sell those off now, and to live within their means before coming cap-in-hand pleading for assistance.
Your country's going broke...running huge budget deficits.
Wouldn't it seem like a good idea for the politicians to practice what they preach?
And sell those 'corporate jets'?
Just wondering...
.
AHHhhhhh.. imagine a world like that! Where the politician actually wanted to do what's right for his country moreso than his political party... what a world it would be!
But instead, "we" just continue to vote in the incumbent and now we've taught them that they have nothing to fear from the voters, they only have to deliver promises and then blame someone else for the countries ills.
Maybe someday it'll change? .....................soon?????............................
ps, as far as no personal impact? If "we" fail, we're taking everything / everyone with us! Remember that world economy? Here it goes!!!
what nobody discusses is that not only does it cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$to fly POTUS around with all the advance workers and support equipment, but how bad they screw up traffic on the roadways and ALSO air traffic of other aircraft is blocked from the portions of the countery HE is being flown between-----THEY always go DIRECT which might save THEM hundreds of dollars in fuel costs, but it increases the area of the airspace that is shut down to airlines for a certain time before and after THEIR transit----it gets more comlicated in that in this voting sorie to Chicago, that west coast departures would be delayed so as not to be anywhere near the eastern airspace that AF1 might be in
ya monday night he brought that million dollar an hour flying circus out here to lax just to go on the jay leno show and pick up a few more checks from the Hollywood billionaires but la is used to that he has been here 17 times this year ...ted
That must make the 405 freeway even more of a 'joy' to sit on for hours.
Heck Ted, we only had the emporator visit three times - but of course, no billionaires here to throw money at him - only GE
It really gripes me, a card carrying and conservative tax payer, to have to help pay with my hard earned money in the form of taxes for his fun and games with the liberal weenie so called wheeler dealers. I recently read that it cost the tax payers over 1.1 BILLION dollars a year to pay for him and his family (which I think is low for 2012)
ya just think how much it cost to fly him uo to the hamptons to play the 100 plus rounds of golf if you do the math that's about once every 2 weeks oh well you can just add jealousy to my other descriptions like extreme right winger, raciest, sexiest, misogynist, homophobe, and I am sure there's more just can't think of them now but just turn msnbc, or cnn, you will hear them all LOL ...ted
I just noticed on a photo of him at a stopover Thursday that the plane in back of him was a B757-----does the white house or air force buy the fuel????????maybe the oil people lowered there credit rating-----the B757 had the best seat mile/gallon of all aircraft--------
Just because we don't like the current POTUS, doesn't mean he doesn't need protection. If he decided to forego Air Force one, and use a suburban, it would make it a bit easier for all the nut jobs out there to take him out. I think we'd all agree that if any POTUS was shot or killed it would not help our current economic situation, and as much as it PAINS ME to say this, anybody holding this office deserves protection for themselves and their families. I agree the costs are obsurd, but in order to do his job, he does need to travel.(maybe not so often, though! :) )
do you really think its worth half a million $$ for him to read a teleprompter in front od 200 college kids???????????????
I think that any body within reason in these times would be trying to spend less money---HE can reach the TV networks with a "fire side chat" on every tv/radio station in the country from the White House with out exposing the President of the United States Of America to every body with the even the slightest wish of the termination of HIS period in office!!!!!!!!!!!
If we really had any tiny bit of ability to limit campaign finance---------------------no super pacs, etc
It does not matter who is the POTUS, they all do or did the same thing.
My issue is why does the POTUS get to use our money for his protection, transportation, ect. while he is campaigning.
Even if he is paying for everything thru campaign contributions (which I don’t think so), we are paying him to be the POTUS, not for him to be campaigning for a job.
Being from Illinois, when HE was running for the US Senate, the republican candidate was Allen Keyes??? who even wasn't from Illinois(Delaware I think) so OBama was guaranteed to be elected ---------even I voted for him as HE was from Illinois-----Keyes wasn't-----
Soooooooooo, he campaigned for President for 2 years, got elected and now I feel that the 6 years I helped send him to Washington is OVER-------he can go back to being an usher for Wright
Regardless of who the President is, the same travelling circus goes with him everywhere he goes. The Secret Service is bound by law with the protection of the President, Vice President, visiting dignitaries from other countries, etc. It costs the taxpayers a fortune, and I doubt any President likes having to travel this way everywhere he goes!!!! It's just another case of government spending being totally out of control. The Secret Service, Department of Defense, and all the rest of the programs that were originally designed with a purpose have fell victim to some bureaucrat going crazy with his own authority and making plans and programs without any consideration to the cost to the taxpayer!!!! The President can not travel without the Secret Service. Period. Just another version of attacking the messenger instead of the message!!!!
Dave, it isn't about the secret service who guard him, his family, etc----
Its about the over abundance of traveling all around in zig zag patterns causing total disruption of ALL other air travel so he can go direct, point to point while everybody else is grounded, delayed, rerouted so they can fly in helos, suburmans, ambulance, etc---------it costs $3000 per minute to operate the B747 AF1---------plus the C-17s, helos, etc-----------
Once nominated The Secret service is required to protect the opposing nominee also, So its not just the potus .
Yeah, and it's been that way for years!!! This trip to Chicago certainly wasn't any first time deal!!! I heard when President Reagan flew into the NASCAR race way back when Petty was finishing his career that air traffic up and down the East Coast was shut down and or delayed for the entire day!!!!! As I said, the President doesn't set this stuff up, some silly bureaucrat that has zero consideration of the costs does it all.... Certainly not the only nor the biggest example of fraud, waste, and abuse of our tax dollars that we get jammed down our throats every day.... I agree that it's a money wasting bunch of bs.....but who out in Washington wants to do ANYTHING to curtail any forms of fraud, waste, and abuse??? Heck, the Oversight committees higher outside consultants to do their investigating and write reports on how much money is wasted on various projects and programs....
How many government salaries and jobs have been created with the only result being more of our tax dollars wasted??? None of this has been a first time deal just since President Obama was elected...
Map: Presidential Election Winners by County | Election 2008 | washingtonpost.com
Did any of you see how the 2008 election broke down by county????take a look----------
Yep, but I guess the most dense population is always the highest welfare recipient, therefore strongest democrat support.
“…..Yep, but I guess the most dense population is always the highest welfare recipient, therefore strongest democrat support……”
In all fairness it wasn’t/isn’t necessarily always that way. Your population centers USED to have a concentration of industry which in the majority of cases are/were unionized. Union workers are traditionally a large
democratic voting bloc, something that has been passed down from generation to generation.
When the factories started shutting down or relocating the unemployment/welfare rate soared. So you NOW have a traditionally Democratic areas that are dependent on the party that promises to give them the most…..in the form government assistance.
The real long term key and what is especially important for this election is who the people believe can REALLY bring jobs back to these areas.
.
Absolutely, Mike!!! People do not go on welfare because they prefer it to making a decent wage. People don't live in the projects because they prefer it to a nice house in the country. The industries and plants shut down in the inner cities and the people stayed. Would a Republican choose to live in the street and let his family starve vs. taking a welfare check? I doubt it.... There is no one or no plan that is going to put all these folks back to work tomorrow, no matter who's President it's going to take a long time to recover from this financial catastrophe.
Sounds to me like some folks still have nothing positive to say about anything, and are already considering President Obama the winner of the election.... Better hope the Romney campaign hasn't adopted this same mindset or the election will be little more then a formality!!! Most people are just completely fed up with all the negative bs, and the one's who had not yet decided who to vote for will probably vote for the candidate offering something positive as a solution rather then the candidate spewing the most negative about the other guy....
Oh well, maybe the election is already over??? Let the childish name calling continue, and "enjoy" President Obama's next 4 years in office!!! Maybe complaining about everything folks view as bad is just easier then doing something positive to change things? Perhaps the vote by county map for 2012 will be the same as 2008? It's my opinion that the candidate who wins this election will be the candidate who has the most folks out saying good things about him and his plan to bring this country out of the present debacle and not the one spreading all the doom and gloom and bad mouthing the opposition!
Dave a common thread in a lot of your posts has been the negativity that has been so prevalent during this campaign season. I thank you for that, it has given me something to reflect on and you are absolutely right. During any presidential election with an incumbent you have a record that can be pointed to by the opposition. Of course the challenger has never held the office so it’s only best guess if he is going to make good on his campaign promises.
I personally feel that in large part that has been brought on/done by the politicians themselves and ends up as simple “trickle down” to the voting public. The reason it’s been sooo effective this year is that the majority of people on both sides do not like the direction the country is headed. I honestly feel that on both sides there are way too many people who are reading the headlines and not the article, or if they do read the article, do not search out an opposing view point…….and of course the truth normally fall somewhere in the middle.
My daughter and I had a very good conversation last week on a subject my wife had declared taboo in our house……politics (Missy and I occasionally do stuff like that just to keep her mom on her toes LOL).
Politically Missy and I are on opposite sides of the fence. We discussed the issues that are important to us and why we thought who we were voting for would be a better choice to fix them. At the end of it turns out that Missy is a lot more conservative than I thought, and I’m a lot more liberal than she gave me credit for. We actually agreed on more things than we disagreed about. There were no raised voices and in the end no hurt feelings. I didn’t change her mind, just as she didn’t change mine but in the end we better understood why.
Bottom line……..both sides also have to LISTEN…….something I wish our politicians were better at.
.
If elected president I will begin bussing unemployed/welfare receiving work age people out of the cities into the rural areas of the country---some for agriculture and some for energy and some for road/transportation routes/pipelines---
The first group will do concrete/foundation work for SIMPLE housing that the second group will build houses which of course will include electricians, plumbers, painters,roofers,etc--also within this work group event will be the construction of schools, simple places of worship, and a system of general stores for food, clothing, shoes(just like the stores back home when I was young)
When the community is pretty much complete, we will send in the resident groups that will have under going training for the jobs in the area---farming, mining, oil drilling, etc-------
We will build a road system for light traffic(no 80,000 lb trucks) for scheduled BUS service which will connect to major transport routes.
These initial jobs will all be paid about the same $$$$$ with oppertunities to move up in the skill sets---(electrician/plumber get more pay than the guy with a shovel)
People are going to be issued hard toed work boots and gloves-----------
The idea is to spread out the mountains of total ************* that these cities have become , get folks to work, kids in school, people learn some skills that aren't video games---------
But , I probably won't have enough votes to be elected---
