I have a 91 Chevy 1500 4x4 standard cab. I need to change the clutch , and that's the problem all the books say remove the transfer case before pulling the trans. I don't really see the need for that. Is there something I'm not seeing. This is the first 4x4 clutch change for me. I have changed MANY clutches in the past.

You really don't have to, but it does make for a lot of offset weight on a tranny jack. If you chain the trans tight to the jack,you should be able to control it, it have seen them twist right off and fall too! Good Luck! Hank
On the lighter aluminum transfer cases it is easier to leave them together as long as you have a good trans jack and can do it safely. This also kind of can help you reinstall the trans in the clutch too as you have some room and leverage to help line things up a little easier. On some odd weight hanging units I have made a bracket that bolts to the transfer case tail housing and to the jack to help support it.
Removing the T-case is SOP for shops charging by the hour, and the instructions are written with liability in mind. If they tell you to drop it as a unit then some jack-leg is going to do it that way laying under the truck using his knees & forearms as his tranny jack and his widow will sue them. Ryan & halftanked have it right, IMO.
