Unexpected Vacation

I picked up a cough a day or 2 before Thanksgiving..........pretty much normal for me and this time of year. As usual I figured it would go away on it's own. Well it didn't and by last Saturday I figured I better have it looked at. I ended up having a 4 day stay at the hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia.

The last time I was admitted to a hospital was over 45 years ago, so I learned a few things in my stay there;

Nothing will make you feel more like an old man than taking a walk while hauling around a pole with an IV bag on it.

TV sucks just as bad in the hospital as it does at home, but it’s harder to find the stations you normally complain about.

If you decide you can probably just use your phone to check the web sites and maybe make a post or 2 rather than bringing a lap top in……. make sure you have your glasses.

They time the nightly blood draws, medications, and vitals checks to catch you just as you’re dosing back off from their last visit.

If they don’t have a real person to come in and wake you back up when you are falling back to sleep one of the machines will start beeping and flashing.

That being said the hospital I was in was new (just opened in April) and really well laid out. They put me on the second floor and I even got a room with a view.

If you look thru the gap in the back wall those really are mountains.


The food service was not what I expected, they actually had a menu to choose from and the food was pretty palatable…….it was nice not having to go down and push the buttons on the vending machines myself.


All that aside, I really can’t say enough good about the care and staff I had, they really were outstanding………. both competent and caring.

Boy it sure is good to be back home again though.

Glad you got the cough looked at Mike, that you "survived" the healing process, and that they didn't remove your sense of humor while they had you captive. Take care of yourself now that you're home!

Glad you're fine now....pneumonia, at our age, can be very serious stuff.

Get Better!! Even the best hospital stay is nothing like being home with your own stuff..

Get better, Mike. Pneumonia is a tough mother at our age. I had it about 4 years ago, and it kicked my ass.

Sorry to hear this, Mike, glad you're back on terra-firma, feeling better I hope. Horsepistols today are a far cry from those of years long past, but they still are a way distant second place to home. From that picture you posted, I knew just where you were or had been before I even read the post; I have had that same view quite a few times in the past.

Glad to hear you were treated well, and are on the mend at home.

I am all to familiar with hospital stays...over the last 10 years I've probably accumulated 2 years of hospital time. You're spot on with your observations. I can not say enough about the wonderful nurses and staff that have cared for me...some of them I consider extended family members.

BTW...in most cases you don't have to rely on your phone for internet access. Most hospitals have free WIFI...you just have to ask. My frequent hospital stays are why when I last upgraded my computer I opted for a 17" screen laptop. Hospital computing is just like home.

Sorry to hear about your stay, but glad you pulled through fine and are back home again! Take care and don't over do it!

Mike..Good to see you back on track..Good to see you had that cough checked out.. Pneumonia is a real bitch.. been there,done that,,about twenty years ago..Don't know if I would want to do it again..
