need help with body work

ok i am getting my truck ready for next year so i can paint it and stuff i know that i need to remove all the glass and take the doors off. but what i am wanting to know is it has some bondo init and if i should sand it down and find out why it is there and then put more back if it needs it. and if i should use a certian primer what spray gun i will need. and all that i have a chambell hausfeild compresser and this is all the stuff it does and how much air it can hold
5.5hp 120 volt, 26 gallon asme tank, 6.5 scfm@40 psi, 5.1scfm@90 psi, 125 psi Max.

Well, use the primer that is made by the paint company your using, otherwise, they won't gaurentee the paint and there may also be adhesion problems. You should take the bondo out and put new in, if it needs it. For a paint gun, you should get a high quality gun, it really dosn't matter if it's HVLP, that stands for high velocity low preassure, it is basicly approx 20-40 % more efficent than a standard gun ( 75%-90% hvlp, around 50% regular ) but are gennerely more expensive. I bought just a high quality siphon feed for a mere 25 bucks. For the nozzles I'm not shure of the sizes but I do know that the larger nozzles are used for primer, smaller for paint.

There will be in most cars rust & rust thrus under the bondo. Remove the bondo & replace the metal. w/new metal(weld), Epoxy prime the area & do the bondo work.

If you do not have welding skills go to a local vocational school or farm the work out.

well my uncle is supposed to be teaching me some welding. but i looked at the back of the metal and it didnt have no rust on it it just had the holes for the side molding and stuff. and the guy just liked to use bondo but is there a different way to feel the holes with out useing bondo???????

ya spoda weld up the holes then grind them smooth but, don't create too much heat at once or the metal will warp a little , try to use a grinder wheel that dosen't create to much heat, it will help.

Yes you can weld the holes shut. It does not take long to learn how to mig weld, plus its worth it. The only thing I would suggest is use gas when you mig weld it makes for much smoother welds and is less messy.

Truckguy, don't ever bondo holes, the bondo will pop out. Use a MIG welder and put everything down low and only weld a inch to two inches long in one spot and move around. Like Matt said, welding in one spot for a good amount of time will warp the hell out of metal, same with grinding, be careful on that too. Take all old bondo off, sand the whole truck to bare metal if possible and get ALL rust and black spots in the metal... Black spots are bad, get rid of em. Spraytech here can mention a good gun to you and I know what it would be.... The new 3M gun. Hope this helps man.

ok well is there a certain mig welder that i need to get cause i plan on doing some more progects later after i get this one done and i want one to last for awhile. would the campbellhausfeild mig be good or do i need a better one?????

For general bodywork, any Mig would work but, I would recomend the 349 dollar lincon welder, it's a good named welder and it's a good price, it's not the biggest/ best welder you could buy but, it would deffenetly do bodywork. it is an 85 amp unit and can weld 1/8" steel. The cambuls hausfeild from Walmart is a 115 unit but, walmart quality ( they force there suppliers to send out products to other contreys for assembly and they use cheaper parts, in the end, the price can be marked up over 50-200% and still be cheaper for the customer ( My mom works at walmart and I watched the walmart haters special on TV.) also, approx 85% of the American population buys an appliance from walmart every year. to give an exzample of walmart quality, look at a Remmington gun pricing book, there is a listing for walmart and a listing for all the normal companys, Walmart listing is much less.

yeah i dont like walmart i got mine from true value hard ware store. i will see what i can find. you said 349 dollars is that how much it costes i just want to make sure??????.

Dan, look at lincoln or if you got a bit of money to spend check out some Miller welders. If you can then try and get a 220 volt so you can weld a wider range of metals and different sizes, etc. The 110 v won't be able to weld bigger metal and not so great on frames either. You can weld with a 110 on a frame but 220 would be better. Of course it will cost more and quite a bit more but to me it's well worth it and it will last you forever and the duty cycle will be higher (weld longer with it full blast).

ok it will probly be awhile before i get a welder but about painting it is my compressor good enogh or do i need another one???

You need at least a 60 gallon. I was going to buy me a new compressor but don't have the money so am taking my car to a friends house and doing all the body work there in his grandfathers shop once we move everything to one side and clean ALL the dust out and get the clear wrapping stuff up and make my PVC frame for a little temporary paint booth. Look to see what CFM your gun needs and then see if your compressor can handle it. I just recently learned what kind of compressor you need for what from Spraytech and a few others.

Ya don't really need a 60 gallon, it is nice to have if ya have the funding. Our old homade stationary compressor, ( refigerant compressor pump, 35 gallon hot water heater tank ) has served 16 years and we haven't compleatly retired it yet, it runs all our power tools but, it dosn't keep up with some of them but, the things like die grinder and air hammer, does, only the 750 ft lb impact wrench dosent compleatly keep up, my dads siphon feed paint gun kept up, I'm not shure about my new guns ( High quality siphon feed and a ATG touch up and jamb gun ) but they should, I'm using our new 2 horse 7 gallon compressor with a special rig so I will connect our 7 gallon supply tank that we replumed so it has a preassure regulator and a regular hose, not just a tire pump hose. It should sustain fairly well for those paint guns.

Your compressor is well big enough for a hobbiest, yes if you had a lot money, a 60 gallon 7 horse sounds nice but, it's gonna cost ya around 400 bucks ( new ), possibly more. You won't run out of air when painting or probably even running a DA sander, die grinder or anything, it's not like your gonna have 2 services runing ( 2 peopele using air tools at the same time from 1 compressor, like you see in shops with plumbed pvc air pipes running throuout a shop ).

Maybe the serial numbers, just see how many HP it is. Look for something like a 5HP 80 gallon tank which CFM disp. is around 23 and CFM 100 psi 19-20. I am getting this from www.toolsusa.com
Those things are like 1300 bucks and that's those kind that require oil and are quite. If you can find a 60 or 80 gallon one and it's old and it does the job then it will be good. I wish I had the money for a big compressor and a nice spray gun and all the other stuff needed to paint a car. I am going to be buying my own Devilbiss Fineline gun and DA sander but am going to be using a friends compressor. well my uncle tom has some compresors but they arent any bigger than mine and he said that he painted cars with it before??? i dont have a bunch money to spend on it but i want a nice paint job. what i am wanting to know is if mine will do the job or if there is one that dont cost thousands that i could get and put a nice good paint job on with it????

The compressor he has IS adaquate for painting. 5.1 CFM@ 90 , 25 gallon will hold good he's only gona run 35-40 PSI, he's only g PSI is adaquate for most paint guns, some HVLPs but even a good siphon feed or regular gravity feed, is adaquate, HVLP is merely more efficent, some as high as 95% efficent compared to a regular guns 50% avg efficency. That 1300 dollar compressor is for shops running more than 1 air tool at once or high CFM consumption air tools like air shears ( avg 16 cfm ) not for a hobbiest just wanting to lay some paint on his truck.

Yours is more than adaquate for painting.

Matt, I know that 1300 dollar one isn't just for a hobbiest, I was telling him that if he had the money and wanted something nice and all then that would be something in his range. But if he won't be using it all the time running all these different air tools, etc then no use in having it. But you have to agree, it would be nice to have something like that. But yeah sounds like the one you have is good enough then. Best thing I can tell you is practice laying down some paint on something you don't really care about and see how it is throwing down and if it's not good enough then get a new one.

yeah i am going to practice some before i do my truck. who knows i mite even be able to get my supposed to be dad to help me with it he has all the stuff. but i dout it. so i am planing on building me a garage and all. but what would be a good paint GUN i would probly need one to match my compressor right. where would i find one and what one would i need???

It would be great to have a 1300 dollar 80 gal compressor but, in now way is it practicle for anyone who is just a hobbiest, it's none the less overkill, the most you really need is a 35- 60 ( maby ) gallon for a hobbiest. The comp he has is adaquate for painting and most anything else and the fact is, it's there, he can use it. That 1300 80 gal will service more than 1 air tool, it would supply an air system, so a few people could gain service of the compressor anywhere theres a air hose in a shop. My uncle paints cars nice and he used a 10 gallon homade compressor when he painted his old van and it turned out nice. He also says " The gun cannnot be any better than the painter using it ". I'm not trying to pick a fight with anyone:)

To practice, go to walmart, get 1 qt of rustolum enamel tractor paint and some paint thinner ( not laquer thinner ), mix it 50 50 in your gun and practice on any metal. For a gun, don't get a gun that has a cfm rating over 5.1 @ 90 PSI, get an HVLP gravity fed if you can find 1 with those ratings but, otherwise, get a high quality siphon feed. The gun is only as good as the painter.

NO, got 2 in our shed, my real point is, that you are beyond hobbiest , your more professional leval. By a hobbiest, I mean someone doing the buildup in there driveway or garage, my driveway allows a lot of work room but not 6500 sq ft, when I was working on it in my grandfathers garage, which is approx 700 sq ft, maby more, maby less, 2 car garage, I was using 1 side, I had to flip the car around when I wanted to do work on the other side, it was tight working on it otherwise. A normal garage where a hobbiest might do work, is not larger than there house, that's why I compared my house to your shop because my house is on avarage size, maby a little small but it's a 24x 48 doublewide, our house in savana is about the same length and width but the basement has been finished off, making it double the size.

you operate on a much more professional leval yet still a hobbiest. My computer was giving me greif, that's why theres 3 posts of the same thing. Back the the original point, you have a use for your 4 compressors, like your blast cabinet and probably a large assortment of air tools and other air powered gadgets but, someone just working out of there garage dosen't need 4 compressors, most people have 1 15 gallon to 35 gallon compressor in there garage and that is fairly adaquate for most air powered tools and paint guns and such.

well as far as the welder goes i got one that will do the job.
after i buy some pieces for it it will do even better.
oh and i figured i would practic on my mom's 85 ferd for painting. :LOL:
and then i got the 79 to practice on as far as welding and such.

I think you got it, other than 50% overlap on paint.

Streets, you got a huge shop compaired to most of us here. Me, Matt and Truckguy probably don't even have our own garage at that... our parents own the things not us and they are small. Plus we don't have as much money as you. As far as a 15 gal 5 HP compressor working... mine won't. It run's constently when just using the blow nozzle to dust something off... Well I can use the air for about 2 minutes and then it kicks on. Paint in the ass, and my other small one that my dad uses on jobs for nail guns, etc I don't even touch. But anyways, Truckguy, before you even weld anything I think you should try and find scrap metal somewhere and practice a ton before you weld anything like a frame, or anything at all that you will be riding in. Try different welds like butt welds, etc. You can lay a nice looking weld down maybe but it may not penetrate well so test it own. Butt weld something, put the piece in a vise, bent it and see how it breaks. It shouldn't break just the weld, if it breaks at all then it will take some of the metal plate with it.
Go on www.millerwelders.com and they have some tips on there. Lincoln Welder site has plans for welding tables, etc to build that are nice and some tips on there so check that out too man.

just to throw this out there, I've been painting my truck with a HVLP gun and I have a 3 hp 15 gallon compressor. I run 40 psi out of the compressor for spraying and it keeps up with the gun just fine. I recently painted the entire cab inside and out, it took about 15-20 minutes per coat. The flash time was 15 minutes, so basically I was spraying for at least 45 minutes straight and the tank pressure never dropped below 100 psi.
