Project $ 3 K Is Underway

Now that you mention it, the pictures are probably confusing. The body is standing on its firewall, and yes, that rear part up in the air will settle around the kickup of the frame. You only see a very small portion of it when installed, because the fuel pump and battery hide most of it. We were thinking about bending up a piece of 18 gauge steel and sending it off for louvers, and putting it inside that pocket. But after I realized how little you see of it, I decided to not go to that trouble. Plus, louvers would be hard to keep clean back in there.

If you put that bed liner coating on the bottom to help keep it clean, I'm wondering if that will really do that. I put a wrinkle finish on the bottom of a trailer a few years back and after a few months it looked awful. It seemed to be a dirt magnet and hard to clean. Maybe the bed liner stuff is different I don't know, I have no experience with it. Just a thought :)
On another note, I can't tell you how happy I am with that little battery, that thing cranks like a 24 volt system and recharges faster than anything I have ever had.

That's really good to hear Ken, about the battery. It puts my mind to rest about if it was going to be enough. Would have been a real problem if it wasn't, as my car really has no room for a bigger one. Thanks for letting me know.

This bedliner is pretty smooth when applied, and just yesterday I dusted off the portion inside the body that I have done already, and it cleaned up pretty well. It had been sitting, gathering dirt, and it seemed to shed that stuff ok. I have seen the rougher stuff, and it does have lots of pores to catch dirt.

Nice to hear about the battery, I was worried you would have to put it in a lawn mower. I never thought you could put 2 of those batteries hooked in series for more cranking power and they wouldn't have to be side by side.

Brad, thanks. Denny was one of the guys that I first noticed when I joined the forum, because he obviously knew his stuff and backed it up with all these cool charts and graphs. How anyone could find fault with someone who goes out of their way, and is always the Gentleman, is beyond me.

BTW, I got a little more fiberglassing done today. I laid up two layers of mat in the rear pocket area. By tomorrow it should be cured enough for me to lay the body upside down and start on the underside of the floor. That will be a piece of cake compared to what I did today. The angles in that pocket were tough to get right, but a little more grinding and filling with body filler, and it should be fine.

Here is a picture of the pocket now. I know it looks just like yesterday's picture, but this time the plywood is covered with mat.

PS: Yep, Brad, it was a relief to hear that Ken had good results with the same battery. One less thing to worry about.

Hi Don, a little update on the garage had help today got the plywood up, going to order my metal siding and metal roof tomorrow. Might get this done before winter.......LOL

Yes Don, on a pole barn style I'm doing with a steel roof, most of the time you use a banding board, but because I'm a little nuts I like to use plywood for strength. I sometimes over engineer, rather it be extra strong.

Better to overengineer than to do it the other way. Sounds like you are gonna have a nice shop there, Take some more pictures for us. :)


As for me, all weekend I have been doing the fiberglassing on the underside of the floor. Yesterday I flipped it upside down and started grinding away, and about an hour later I remembered I didn't put my paper suit on, and was starting to feel that familiar fiberglass itch. I went home, took two showers with baby oil, a scrub brush, then used duct tape to try to pull some of the fibers out. No luck, so last night I paid the price when I tried to go to sleep. :(

Today it was pretty well gone, and you can bet I closed myself up in the paper suit, goggles, and a mask. Wasn't going through that again. I thought about the pantyhose trick Bob mentioned one time, but I just didn't feel like going through the check out line at the grocery store with them. :o :o Been too many years that I have been single, I guess.

Anyway, I spent the entire day laying glass mat on the underside of the tunnel area and the rest of the floor. Some areas got one layer, and others got two or three, depending on the strength I wanted in that area. It is now as solid as a rock, and tomorrow I can DA the entire bottom and sand it smoother. A little filler in the spots that show (the front of the tunnel shows for about 3 inches ) and then I can flip it back over and finish up the cockpit.

Here are a couple of pictures of the work I got done today. The green stuff you see in the first picture is Tiger Hair filler. I used it to get the front of the tunnel faired in so that it would make a smooth transition, and also fill some low spots. Then I laid mat over the filler.

Don does the lower edge get tied to anything to reinforce it or filled with something. I never worked with a fiberglass body except corvette's till I got fiberglass poison. My throat swells up if I get near any fiberglass being worked. I know the itch, I would use baby powder or gold bond powder before I worked fiberglass.........LOL most not have worked so well.

Oh my God................................it's not like you'd be buying tampons!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sheeeeshhh!!!!

But just in case, tampons are useful for plugging bullet wounds until you can get to the emergency room.:)
