Don thats what made me buy a vise for my drill press, I wasn't wearing gloves at the time while drilling and L bracket. I was sure I could hold it to drill one small hole. The hole I drilled ended up in my hand.

Same here, I was drilling holes in the gusset's on my fuel tank bracket's I had a good grip, and then I had one less fingernail:eek: . I thought I had wrapped all my fingers around the others. All that with a vise 2 feet away.
Ron
Ouch. It's always that one little job that we just want to zip through that gets us. There are lots of tools in our garages that can hurt us real fast if we give them the chance.
You can bet I'll be more respectful of that drill press the next time. :o :o :o Hand is a little sore today, but I'm really grateful that's all I got out of it.
Don
Don
Did I miss something? Did you get hurt? Sure hope not.
Mike
No, just my pride.:o Thanks for asking though. Did something stupid, tried holding a washer while drilling through it on the drillpress, bit grabbed and wrapped my arm around the spinning bit. Nothing broke, just a few cuts and bruises.
My "Father" (Dan my Son) chewed me out for not being more careful when I told him about it. I told him "look, I can hurt myself all I want, and you can't do anything about it........na na na."
I'm grounded for a week.
UPS truck just showed up with some Speedway stuff to paint, so I'm sneaking out of here before he gets home from work.
Don
I don't want to talk about what happened with my Chinese cleaver last week - but my little finger is healing nicely.
Here ya go pops.............you need one of these..........
Glad to hear you're OK.
About 5 years ago my dad lost a finger to a drill press accident. It wasn't pretty. He's 72 now.
Mike
Even Gourmet cooking is dangerous, huh? Hope you are okQuote:

Mike: Who would ever think a simple little drill press could be so vicious? Sorry to here about your Dad. I've got a whole new respect for these things. Wasn't it on American Chopper when Vinnies glove got caught in one that it mangled him pretty badly?
I just got off the phone with Speedway. The shipped my stuff in two boxes. The one that had the tie rod in it had a hole in the side, and guess what is missing? That kills my plans to paint that part this weekend, and they are sending another one, but it won't be here till next week. I tried to get FedEx Saturday delivery out of them, no go. Oh well, I have wheels to paint anyway. UPS is getting worse all the time. I just saw a bumper sticker that read "UPS, when it absolutely, positively has to be destroyed tomorrow." :p
Now I see why.
Don
Announced today; Federal Express and United Parcel Service have announced that the two shipping companies will merge. The new company will be known as FED-UP!Quote:

Ain't it the truth.

Bob there's another one that merged and the new name is Nofukenway delivery. Sorry for the language.

It doesn't take very long for stuff to happen to get you hurt.
I was installing a steel door from my basement to the garage and the Phillips bit in the drill slipped off the screw and I drove it right into my leg. Bled like a stuck hog for about 20 minutes and ruined a fairly new pair of jeans, but it hurt my pride more than anything. I was just bragging to a buddy of mine that stopped by that it had been YEARS since I had done something stupid like that!!!! LOL KARMA, its a killer!
How do you space years between stupid acts?

Good , we will have to get some beers for me to drink while i drool over the finished cars. Dont feel to bad about the mishap, we all do it sometimes! hey atleast you did not catch your almost finished car on fire, and yuor not hurt badly.
Not a lot to post tonight. I started sandblasting the two front wheels I am going to use. A long time ago I bought 4 of these, and used two on the front of my '27. I've been dragging these two around for years, figuring I would have a use for them someday.
What they are is either '48.'49, or '50 Mercury wheels ( I can't remember which) but they are one of the old hot rodders favorites because they were one of the few (maybe only) 15 inch wheels that had the 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern like the early Fords had. All the other early Ford wheels were 16 inch, and this was a way to get 15 inchers on early hot rods.
I remember I picked the best two of the four for the '27 all those years ago, so I wasn't sure how these would clean up. But, after a while in the sandblast cabinet they came out really nice. I was surprised. Only a couple of small dings in the lip to dolly out, but otherwise, no rust or other issues. I have to take the slicks to the tire shop tomorrow to dismount them so I can paint the rear rims. I was going to do it on my $39.95 Harbor Freight tire machine, but Dan reminded me how tough they were to mount, so I think I will find a tire shop that does custom wheels and go there tomorrow AM.
All I have to post tonight is this one picture of the two wheels, one blasted and one not yet done. Maybe the next picture will be of orange wheels. :3dSMILE: :3dSMILE:
Don
Wheels look great, but your shoes need polishing   :D
Just for historical purposes, the ones you show are 46-48 Merc. The '49-51's were 15's with the 5 1/2" b.c., but the hub cap nubs were on the outside of the inner circle rather than the inside. If you need a pic I can take one.
Thanks Bob. I knew it was something like that, but CRS had made me forget exactly which these were. If you have a picture, it might be good to show it.
Ken: I'm like Wilson(?) the neighbor of Tim the Tool Man. All you ever see are my toes. I had to make a choice, new shoes, or car parts..........guess which one won out???
Don
Don , I order you to take a least one day this weekend and rest. Have a cookout with your family and relax. Thats what I'm going to do, then I got to replace the back door on my sisters house. She, BBQ and gives me free food to replace her door.
Brad
Don, I know I haven't been here bugging you. I figured you'd have the car done by now. Your boys truck is realy coming along. Realy like your colors they look great together can't wait till finish photos get here. I took on a few little jobs for some old customers and its been eating up all my time. Talk about DUMB I was cutting a stump from an old tree out while kneeling down to get it close to the ground. Yep chain saws cut meat quicker than wood. Got it just above the knee 27 stitches later I finished the job. I just knew duct tape wasn't going to get it done. Anyway keep up the good work. Ain't retirement COOL:LOL:
Brad: Well, everybody is going to be away, so it would be a small cookout. :D Don is off camping, and Dan has lined up some playing gigs, so it is just me and the cats. I don't mind though, the shop parking lot should be pretty empty with the holiday and all, so I can drag out some stuff to paint. I've been pacing myself pretty well, just working from the afternoons to late at night when it's nice and cool.
Charlie: I've been wondering where you have been. :) Did the chainsaw thing just happen recently? Sorry to hear about that. There is another tool that was designed to remove stuff quickly, be it wooden or human. Yeah, I am enjoying this "retirement" thing. In fact, I am considering officially doing that in July when I turn 62. I still want to work at something though, I feel sort of not driven anymore, and I like working, so maybe part time or something. Dan and I will be moving to another Condo in about 3 weeks, so that will take some time, getting settled there and all, so I do have things to keep me out of trouble.
Don
Your wish is my command oh aged one............
That's interesting Bob. I didn't realize the '49-51 hubcap snapped on the outside of the little bumps. Glad I have the earlier ones, as those are the hubcaps I plan on running.
BTW, there is a company that makes a hubcap adapter so that you can run '35 style small hubcaps on these wheels, and I am considering doing that. Gives it a little different look, and you paint the adapter wheel color.
Thanks for that picture Bob.

In reply to one of your earlier post about paint color.. There are 3 things that will effect your finish color other than a wrong mix.. Tempreature Humidity and Air presure at gun.. If any of those atre different you can get a different shade in the finish. Thats why any time I paint a car it gets done all at once. Other than the jambs they get done maybe a day earlier. I used Glassarut on my 38 and they said to mask off where you want the pin-stripe 30 mim. after you shoot the last color coat then shoot the stripe. Man I was real cautious removing that tape. Nothing happened then we put on the clear it all just melted together you couldn't tell they weren't both put on at the same time. Keep up the good work I read alot but don't take the time to yack. :(
Charlie
I had a set of the '49-51's on my '36 Coupe with the plain dog dish caps and I don't remember which year they were plain. The rears were reversed with Buick or Olds rims since they were a tad bit wider. Uncle Bob could probably tell for sure since I'm by no means an authority on those type of things.
Yep, I'm glad Uncle Bob came through with that info. He does have his moments. :D :D :D All these years I have been saying I had '50 Merc wheels on my '27, and they are actually '46-'48 Merc.
Well, it's Sunday night.......did I make my deadline to get the car up on orange wheels. No, I didn't :o , but it is sort of better this way. I did get the two front wheels painted, and tomorrow I will paint the back two, but I want to let them really cure for a few days before I put them on the tire machine. I have always padded the rim with rags and used lube so that the paint doesn't get scratched, but they still do. Maybe if I let them really dry they will be less prone to doing that. I'll stick them out in the sun for a few days to really cook them.
I did drop the car down off of the jackstands, and put it on loaner wheels and tires, plus I got my drag link painted and mounted. The tie rod should show up next week (to replace the one UPS lost) and I'll get that painted and mounted when it comes.
Dan is pushing me to install the engine and tranny tomorrow for the final time, and maybe we will. He has the day off, and has offered to help me do it. Very possibly tomorrow night I can post a picture of an actual engine installed in the car. :D :D
Here are some pictures of what I got done today. BTW, I have decided to run 5:00 x 15 tires on the front instead of my usual 5:60 x 15's. I think they will contrast better against the slicks, plus drop the car another 1/2 inch in the front.
Don
Maybe by tomorrow night these two will finally be wed. :D :D
Don
Don how was your BBQ with the cats? Still like that color it really pops.
Brad
Don
Do you have your own tire machine??? It sounds like you do. If so they make nylon peacies that go on the end of the tools. I bought them for mine along time ago. They work great there are 2 peasies one for each end of the bar used to install and remove the tire.
Brad: I actually had a couple of dinners at home this week. Felt like a normal person for a change. :D
Charlie: Yeah, I have one of the $ 39.95 Harbor Freight specials. Nothing great, but it beats running to the tire shop every time I need one mounted or dismounted. Where do you get those plastic pieces you mentioned? Sounds better than the rags I usually use.
Don
You mean these Ken? They're '50 Merc, the '49 has "Mercury Eight" embossed, the '51's had a raised logo portion in the center, looked kind of like a large nipple.Quote:

If I'd taken a slight side shot it would look familiar to you, this matches your "pillbox" reference (a good one, though probably meaningless to the youngin's:D ). There's a "ridge" (or reveal) around the the cap side midway between the face and the mount surface.
That would be them.:) Last year at the annual swap meet at the fairgrounds I come upon a vendor that was selling repo's of those and many other odd hub caps. I don't remember the name, but the quality looked pretty darned good.:)Quote:

Okay, one more time...................in profile!
BTW Ken, those repops are a smaller diameter than the originals so they'll fit the standardized center diameter.
Could you turn it a little more to the left?
Ok, you are right, that's it.
