I drove my car to the resturant this morning(because my truck is apart for bodywork) and I couldn't get in the door about every guy in there was looking out the windows. Hotrodders/streetrodders ARE mostly good and generous people. I have given away parts, helped fabricate, done minor welding, and even loaned my entire garage to a broke-down rodder for two days once; all for free. Those little acts of kindness have come back to me many times over.:D :D
I can't speak for Don, but he encouraged me to do the thread on my roadster and I have been enjoying it.:) It keeps me motivated and I enjoy imparting the knowledge and experience I have gained over the years. It's a little bit of an ego thing, too. I have never built a car with a full-time audience.:cool: :LOL:

Let me put it this way Tony, cranking off three well aimed rounds in less than 10 seconds with a bolt action Mauser is somewhat of a feat, to put it mildly. I was in Okinowa when it happened and some of the old timers who had been pretty proficient with the Springfield '06 were more than a little dubious.

Charlie, I'm like you, I love just going to the store or gas station in a rod. Pretty nice to come out and find a few people gathered around your car. Some of them aren't really sure what it is, but they are interested and ask lots of questions. Nice time to educate them that hot rodders are not hoodlums, but people just like them.
JR, I'm glad you are doing your thread too. It is a contrast to mine, especially with the track look and all, that it is giving another perspective on how to build a car. You are right about the audience thing. Sometimes I find myself grinding a bracket just a wee bit more than I would, because I know lots of sharp eyes are going to be looking at it. :D :D Also keeps you moving.
NTFDAY, I just watched a show on Kennedy and the assassination. They laid out some pretty interesting information about how Oswald was a loose cannon, and how Ruby was super PO'd when he heard about the shooting. They made a pretty strong arguement for Oswald being on his own, but as they said at the end, the only people who really know died and took it to their grave with them. That was a horrible day. :( :(
Brick, I totally agree about this forum. Lots of nice people for sure.
Lastly, I got a little work done on the T tonight. I have a few odds and ends to correct before I pull the body off to paint it. My throttle was coming out in the wrong spot, cable would have hit my valve cover, so I had to modify the pedal assembly to move it over. Good news is I have a lot of room for my gas pedal foot now.
I also have a little interferance in the steering shaft. No big deal, I just have to move a bracket on the bottom and it will be fine. Here is where I ended up tonight.

I've been out of the loop for awhile. This thread grows so fast that catching up after a few days off takes awhile.
The car's looking fantastic. For what it's worth, Signshop's concept work looks right on IMO.

Yep, now that I can sit in it I can see there was no way in the world a stick shift would have fit. I just have enough room for two pedals, and will have to brake with my left foot even with that.
Last night I finished up the lower steering column mount. (not really picture-worthy) I had to cut off the old mount and weld on a new one in a slightly different position. For some reason it worked when I only had the cowl roll bar in place, but as soon as I glassed the roll bar into the body the dimensions changed and it was binding. It was not hard to do, and when done I put some vicegrips on the steering shaft to see how easy it would steer. Turned very smoothly and with little effort, even standing still, so going down the road the steering should be very easy. For economics I am going to go with the 15 inch wheel I bought at Daytona last year. The one I borrowed to try from Dan is one inch smaller, and admittedly looks better, but I can use the $170 for a lot of other things that I need to wrap up the car. I'm starting to feel the pinch from being off work for the last 6 months, and don't want to dig into savings more than I have too.
I also found some minor interference around the bell housing area, again not a real problem. The flange where the starter goes is rubbing the tunnel for only about 2 inches, so I'll trim it down with an air saw and that should take care of that.
Now the body can come back off and I can finish up the brake, fuel, and water lines. I ordered some stuff from Summit yesterday like my alternator mount, Lokar throttle cable (Dan loaned me his and I have to replace it) and kickdown linkage. I just have to figure out what starter I am going to end up with, and get that ordered.
So yes, all in all, not too far away I think from getting it on the road. :D :D

Don your feet are going to get to know each other a bit better. I thought i remember a hump mount pedal . Mounted on the hump at a angle bringing just the pedal and arm to the left of mount.
In my salvage yard walks i seen some very compact pedal units . I think they could have been mounted in as little as 12 inches of space with all three pedals . Swinging pedals do present more with master and clutch , but they have the units that mount under cowl for the clean firewall.

Today I went to the upholstery guy down the row from my shop, and he came to look at the car. From talking to him I think he knows his stuff, and I liked what I heard. He uses only Starboard (that plastic "plywood") for his backing board because it is waterproof. Coming out of the marine industry I am very familiar with Starboard, and that impressed me. He also said he can do the top roll so it doesn't look like an afterthought. I have seen some that are just too bulky, and that was something else I liked.
His shop is relatively new, and I told him I would be taking this car to every show and cruise possible, and would gladly hand out his cards, and tell people how pleased I was with his work (assuming I WAS pleased) He seemed to like that idea, and said he would go the additional mile to really make it sharp and also cut me a better price. He quoted a loose number of maybe $ 1000 to $1200, and I think that is super reasonable. I was thinking more like $ 2000 to $ 2500. If it got higher than that I was going to do it myself until I could afford a pro job, but the numbers he quoted are great.
He says I can wheel the body down to him on it's dolly and he will start making up the Starboard liner, then I can paint it before he does the final upholstery. I think we have settled on pebble grain ultra vinyl in black. I know black gets very hot in the sun, and would prefer white, but that color just would clash with the rest of the car. Oh well, can't have everything. :D
So, I guess I can cancel the order for the Mexican blanket. :LOL:

Welcome to the club, Don. I'm going to have to get used to having my size 9-1/2s being in constant contact with each other. I learned to drive left-foot brake back when my big-block pickup didn't have enough stall in the converter. I had to right-foot the gas and left-foot the brake to keep it from stalling out.Quote:

I had to go to China on business and decided to take the family. So we made it a vacation. Went to the Great Wall and 3 Gorge, and a bunch of places I can't pronounce much less spell. It's all worth seeing if anyone is interested. I took over 600 pictures.
Wow, that really IS a vacation. I for one would love to see some of the pictures. Had to be fantastic.:)

I have to tell you it will really open your eyes to what is going on in our country,we are really in trouble here and it's like, nothing is being done. I don't want to get political here but I honestly don't think this is reversible. I don't know what will happen to future generations.

Hey, I have a question about car insurance to ask you guys. Yesterday I went to my insurance agent to renew my regular car insurance, (I've had the same agent since 1985) and I mentioned to him that I would be coming in to put my T on the policy in the next couple of months. He said "don't do it, I have a better deal for you." Turns out he sells Haggerty Collector Car insurance, and says for about $ 300 a year I can get total coverage on it.
I've just always tagged it onto my normal policy, and never considered anything like Haggerty just because I thought it might be too restrictive (he says I can drive up to 3,000 miles a year) but how do they verify that? My car has no speedometer, and hence, no odometer either,
Do any of you have Haggerty, and how do you like it? Do they put you through any hoops initially, like pictures and maybe not accepting you, or anything?

I have Haggerty, I stated the value I wanted it insured for and they requested pictures and that was it, no restrictions that I am aware of. I haven't filed a claim so I don't know that would go.

I've had Haggerty for over 15 years, never had a claim to test them. They used to be very price competitive. In the last few years others have decided to give them some competition. Last year I put the Fairlane on with Grundy (check them out as well) because they were close to $100 less for the same dollar amounts of coverage (comparing rates alone isn't enough unless you know the level of coverage), and didn't require an appraisal as I've had to do with Haggerty in the past (on some of the cars not all). I still have the cars that are in the build process with Haggerty (comprehensive only, not liability) as Grundy told me they don't insure unfinished or project cars. As for the mileage thing, nobody has ever come out to varify odometer readings either initially or annually, it must be some technicality they have to abide by to sell the type of policy they do.
Just to add to what Bob said it reminded me that Haggerty does insure project cars. I wanted my roadster insured when it went to the body shop, just in case :D

Just to clarify because you used the words "stated the value" as this is close to insurance policy terminology. There are two ways policies are written to define how a loss payout will be made value wise. "Stated value" is what most daily driver policies are based on. That means that the initial value of the vehicle is stated as such and so amount and then is subject to depreciation as time passes.Quote:

Thanks Ken and Bob. I just always assumed policies like these were for cars you occasionally drove, like maybe to a show or cruise, and when I have a running rod I like to drive it alot, like daily. I also didn't want to get into any hassles where you need to get a survey or something similar to determine condition or value, but it looks like that is not even required.

That's technically accurate. The policy language on all lower cost collector car policies that I'm aware of is very restrictive in it's definition of use. That's how they insure for lesser premiums, by restricting use. Daily driving raises the risks. It comes down to your tolerance for risk, and your level of "honesty". If you have an accident at 7:00am in commuter traffic on a Tuesday morning on a route that is plausible for going to your place of employment (when you were) they may say that you violated the terms of the policy and not cover the loss. You may retort that you were actually driving it to the tune-up shop (this is the honesty part:) ) that just happened to be on the way to work, and argue the point with them. BTW, I just ran across a website that I thought might interest some of you. It was posted on another forum, and I called the guy and had a conversation with him. It will solve a little problem I ran into.
There is no room on top of my dash for a tach and cup, because my windshield lays back so far. I have an old Dixco tach that I want to use, but it didn't look good under the dash in just the cup, so I thought if I could get an underdash gauge panel for just the tach and maybe the ignition switch on one side, and another button or switch on the other it would look nice. I even thought of making a panel out of 18 gauge steel and having Dan weld a lip around it for strength and cosmetics. But then I ran into these guys who have some pretty cool panels already done.

Turns out they will custom make a panel for no upcharge, and will work from my drawing. The guy I talked to, Karl, was super friendly and helpful, and says he is happy to make up my panel for $ 79.00 plus shipping. The one I like that they already have is the one shown below, but the top is curved for a '32 style dash, and mine is flat. Their stuff looks pretty traditional, and I think it will blend in with my dash pretty well.
Just thought someone else might benefit from knowing these guys exist.

Grundy and Hagerty both limit vehicle use to hobby, show, parade or pleasure. If you're driving it to work, you've got a problem.
