What's Florida PD's stance on running fenderless? My dad was forced to run 3/4 fenders on his T in CT, I thought it really ruined the look of his car.
BTW, yours looks awesome!
Thanks again guys.
As for Florida's laws.........we really don't have any laws down here, come on down.  No, seriously, our motor vehicle laws are pretty easy. You don't have to have fenders or a hood, and modifications like chopping and channelling are fine. You have to have normal stuff that your car had originally, like wipers, headlights, etc, but since mine are titled as from the 20's, I am exempt from most of that stuff too.
Most of the cars and trucks running around down here are modified in one way or another, whether it is a jacked up pickup with straight pipes, lowrider pickup or ricer, or the ones with huge tires the pimps drive. Only if you get some small town cop who wants to be a pain do you get any heat. The regular cops usually leave you alone unless you are doing something stupid or look suspicious and they want to check you out.
That is why I left Pennsylvania to come here. :D :D (try explaining THAT one to your wife....."Honey, we are moving to Florida because we don't need fenders there."  )
Don
Over in Ausbloodytralia where they have to have fenders, some enterprising fella has made them out of fibreglass to look exactly like tyres. And , mounted to the backing plate, and very close to the tyre, at first glance it's hard to tell.
Looking good Don!!!
I've never understood why the state required fenders. What's it to them - other than they have the inherent need to regulate anything we do.
In Virginia, they require outside door handles - so they can get into your car and save your six in case of an emergency. Nevermind that most new cars automatically lock the doors when you move, rendering the outside door handle useless.
Thanks Mike.
I guess the fender thing goes back to when they were called "mud Guards." On the old roads, and cars like Model A's, they kept mud and stones from being tossed onto the cars behind you, I think. Like most laws, once they are on the books it is almost impossible to get them back off. As for hood laws, who knows, maybe a safety thing with the fan spinning around or something.
Don
Also, when it rains the tires throw off an awful lot of spray which affects following driver visibility. We got the mandatory fender requirement dropped here in Wa. a few years ago, but the new law permitting fenderless cars stipulates that you park the car (safely) wherever you are the moment that rain begins to fall. That moment is up to the local lawman's discretion.
Now try to explain that to one of them professional politician dudes!!!! He'll have to ask his driver about it!!!!! Maybe people should actually have to know something about the subject they write laws governing!!!!Quote:

Another time they were driving back across the State from a playing gig in West Palm at about 3 AM. A cop did a u turn and stopped them because they were driving the speed limit ! He told them they must be up to something because "nobody drives the speed limit on this road."
It seems the cops single out the younger drivers, while us older guys get a thumbs up from them when driving our rods. I hope they still think that way, especially about baffled headers. lol
Don
I know several thousand teachers that would agree with that!:HMMM: :rolleyes:Quote:

Even though there were plenty of replaced and/or rebuilt parts, the engine and frame were original. His application was refused because he used "too many parts from the same vehicle"!!! :CRY: Now the poor guy is looking for either another frame or another engine so he can switch everything and re-apply.
I've decided to turn my T body over to my friend who has a body shop and let him prep and paint the body. He is coming over to the shop tomorrow night to look at my car and Dans to brainstorm colors and timeframe. I figure while he is working on it I can be doing everything to the chassis to get it running, then when it comes home I will simply mount it and head for the upholstery shop. As for color, I think I am back to black, but since a pro will be painting it I am thinking gloss base coat/ clear coat. Dan still insists the Fusion Orange would look good, but I am worried about having too much of that color on the car. We'll have to see what my buddy thinks.
In the meantime, I have started working on the brakes. I bought all new parts for the S10 rear end today.......shoes, drums, wheel cylinders, and kits. Tonight I did the install on the rear, so now that is done. As soon as the paint dries on the rear drums I can bolt the wheels back on and move to other stuff.
I also bought a selection of predone steel brake lines in 3/16, and will use these to mock up my lines. Then I can order exactly the correct lengths from Inline Tube in stainless without having to guess about what sizes I need. The steel lines are cheap, and using them should give me a better final fit in the real ones.
Here are some shots of the rear brakes and the lines I bought today.
Don
Body Black with fusion orange scallop white stripe accent on the scallop IMHO
Brad
That's pretty much my thoughts too Brad. Only thing I worry about is you don't think the scallops would be interpreted by people as being some "graphics" like the ricers run, do you? I mean, we hot rodders understand them, but maybe..........
Don
Scallops have been around for ages and long before "ricers" ever came on the scene. Tech put them on his old Dodge around '59 or '60. At one time I thought he might get into the field as he was pretty good with a stripping brush.
Don, this is your car....paint it the way you want it. Don't worry about how someone else is going to interpret the scallops....they probably will think it's a "kit" car anyway.
Don,
I'd be nervous about the ricer look.....you're just a pair a wheels away from it!
Oh, Signshop, you're bad, bad, bad, bad!!!!!!!!!~   :LOL:Quote:

Don
Blind from those chrome 24's (spinners no less) or from the injustices I've done to your car? Not to worry I know you'll do it right. I hope this image hasn't swayed you?!:whacked:
Where's the spoiler to complete the shopping cart look? :D
OMIGOD!! Would you look at that!?!? Man I haven't laughed so much since Ma jammed her t*ts in the mangle. That's truly GROSS!!!
Now you've done it, now you'll see that at a show with someone building one somewhere thinking it's cool!!
Thats rich, I always knew you where into the Bling Bling Don!!
Yo yo yo, wasup???  Word, and all that stuff. :D Every time I look at that I start to laugh. Really funny Mike.
My buddy came over tonight and we mapped out a plan to get my car then Dans into his shop for paint. He can get it in about two weeks from now, and that is good, as it will allow me time to do a couple of little things to the body first. Then he will have it for about two weeks he says. Dan still has a little more to do before it can go in, so possibly his can go in when mine comes out in a month or so.
We have just under 4 months til Daytona, so it looks do-able at this point. Now I can really start hitting on the chassis and get it running and ready to drop the body back on as soon as it comes back.
I think I have decided to do it gloss black with the orange scallops.
Don
Sounds like a good plan.I think the scallopps are goin to look real nice. Now lets see it painted.
   Can you get 24" spinner to fit the front Don:LOL:

Don
Just wait a few month's and you will be able to pick up a set on craigslist for $500. It seem's after a few broken leg's from trying to reach the ground and hold their pant's up the 24" novelty wears off.Quote:

Man, I am totally stoked today. I needed a grille shell for the T, and the TP one just didn't look right on this radiator. I could have modified it, but decided to sell it on Ebay and look for another one. I wanted a steel one, if possible, because we can cut it up and weld to it to make it fit perfectly.
Problem is, they no longer make any steel ones. Speedway and TP told me the same thing.......the dies to stamp them got old and fell apart, and nobody was reproducing them. Several model T suppliers confirmed that story. So, I had to try to find a used one.
Anyway, I posted on the National T-Bucket Alliance that I needed one, and a member, NH Ben, came back and said he thought he had one that he bought years ago, and didn't need. He went to all the trouble of digging it out, sent me tons of pictures, and only wanted what he paid for it years ago (a very good price). He then boxed it up extremely well, took it to the shipper, and sent it to me Monday. Best part, he didn't want any money first !!! He put his name and address in the box and trusted me to pay him when I got it. :) :)
Today it came, and this thing is MINT........no, make that SUPER MINT. It is perfect for what I am doing, and I don't think we will have to do much to it to get a good fit. It really reaffirms your confidence in people when something like this happens. Hot Rodders are right at the head of the class when it comes to good people.........Thanks Ben.
Here is a shot of the shell. As you can see, Lucky likes it too, and is no longer that little kitten we brought home. :D
Don
Great story and an even better part Don, that baby is going to look very very good!!
That is super mint Don, hope you don't have to cut it up to much, shame to waste such a nice part. Well your not really wasting it on the that slick little T of yours. LOL
Brad
Yep, I couldn't wait to get to the shop and try it on for fit. I'm happy to report it fit pretty well right out of the box, and it looked like just a few changes would make it work perfectly. Dan was nice enough to come over after work tonight and we just got home (2 am). He spent the whole night cutting it up and welding it back together for me. I pretty much stayed out of his way and handed him tools........he likes to think these things out alone pretty much. :D
The shell was mostly rivited and spot welded together, so the first thing we did was remove the bottom portion. I am probably not going to run that section, just the top and sides. The shell was slightly too short and had mounting ears in the wrong places, so we cut those off and built new mounts that will be skinned over with some 18 gauge filler pieces. We spent about 7 hours and still have a few more to go before it is done, but the hard part is at least finished.
Something tells me this is not a Model T shell. It has no Ford script embossed, and the shape is different than the Total Performance glass one I have. However, that makes me even happier, because it gives the car a funkier/ different look. It fits the radiator like it was made for it.
Here are some shots of where we left off tonight. We put the headlights back on to get the full effect, and seeing the black grille has convinced me the car is going to be black.
Don
Don, Your T is looking great, It really is coming together...
Harmon
Thank you Harmon. I appreciate that.
Don
I would have to say that that is one of the nicest traditioal style Ts that I have seen... Hows your sons truck coming?
Harmon
He is coming along pretty well. The floor is almost done and he has about a months worth of work to do before it can go in for paint. He keeps making changes to it that cost him lots of time, things bug him until he tears it apart and redoes them. But for the most part he should make Daytona in November.
Here is where it sits now. Thanks for asking.
Don
You guys do amazing work. The pu looks killer...So when are you moving back to PA so I can let you work on my POS....
I'm going to Fla and kidnap Don and his son's, then chain them to the wall in my garage so they can only work on my stuff LOL
Brad
I am using your last shot as a screen saver Don, very nicely done. I too llike the slightly different shell, maybe a early wippet sheel, but looks fantastic what ever it is. The orange and the way you have done up the engine yields directly to the black paint IMHO too.
I bet you and your son are having a blast, I am very happy for you. You are a lucky man, that is wealth beyond a mans dreams there.
