We didn't get to talk about it much at Daytona Don but I thought your "valve kissing piston" theory was on the money. Looks like that was the problem. I'd feel pretty good about the valve not dropping into the chamber and taking out the piston which could have caused catastrophic engine failure of biblical proportions. He'll be back on the road in no time.
Dan just told me they got it running tonight. Don took it to the machine shop this morning and the owner did it while he waited. Punched the valve out, cleaned up the guide and seat, put a new valve in it, and set the spring height.......... all for free!! I guess we have given him enough business over the years, and Don did tip him.
They took it for a ride tonight and it seems fine. So it looks like we will both make the downtown Ft Myers show this Sunday. I have to change out my leaking steering box (Flaming River gave me a new one and I just have to send back the leaker) and detail my car from the trip to and from Daytona, and I'm ready to go too. :D Don Garlits was at last years show, maybe I can get a picture of him sitting in my car.........that would be really cool. :D :D
Don
Glad to hear the engine wasn't bad.
Looks like you'll have good weather for this weekend.
I stopped by Garlits' museum a few years ago. Great place if you're a gear head. Didn't get to meet him, though. That would have been cool.
A few pages back Pops had mentioned some deal killing problems with Inline Tube, so I thought I'd relay a recent, more positive, experience I had with a similar company.
I don't have near the selection of tools at the Vegas garage where I'm doing the '65 Dodge, so I ordered a preformed kit for both the fuel and brake lines from Classic Tube, http://www.classictube.com/. Both sets of lines fit the chassis as well as the stock pieces did, with all the bends conforming to the twisting and turning needed to get from back to front with only minor tweaking needed. The only issue I encountered was the lines from the master cylinder to the distribution block. These were non-stock items as we converted the car from drum to disc brakes. It just so happened that we discovered this the day before going to the SEMA show, so stopped by their booth to talk with someone. Had a good discussion with one of their sales guys, Mike Vacanti, and he understood the problem almost immediately. From my description he surmised that they had shipped a later model set of tubes for the M/C connections. He asked me to send back the wrong stuff to exchange for the right pieces. I asked if they could custom make them to my desired routing, and he said "sure, for a small fee, just send patterns". So we made up some wire form patterns that routed the lines in a neater way than the typical setup and sent them along with the return. When I did a follow up with Mike the following week it only took a small reminder of what we'd discussed (amazed me since he probably talked to a bazillion people at SEMA). The upshot of the story is, I got very good service from Mike, at a very reasonable price for the custom work, the lines were formed right to the patterns I sent, and except for a misrouting by UPS, they would have gotten back to me in a timely manner.
Thanks Bob for the info. We are looking for a new source, and will give them a try when the time comes.
BTW, I thought you were out in Vegas gambling and stuff like that. Didn't know you were doing the car thing for SEMA. How is it going?
Don
SEMA was at the beginning of the month and was an enjoyment as usual. The rest of the time was spent doing a little yard work, and working on the Dodge (well, except for the week we spent in SoCal with family for T-giving). Back in the much cooler and wetter NW since yesterday.Quote:

Brad, you mentioned that you didn't want to just get in my T. I honestly wouldn't have minded a bit. Nice of you to respect that, but next time just jump in.
I was used to coming out of a grocery store or work and finding some German tourists sitting in my '27 taking pictures of each other. For some reason they felt it was ok to just do that.   It wasn't worth the effort to be a jerk and get on them about it.
Don
Good idea. At Daytona you could get a picture for $ 5.00 of the General Lee with a Daisy Duke cutie in her "Daisy Dukes", so maybe I could have made a buck or two. She was a lot cuter than me though. :3dSMILE: :3dSMILE:
Don
Don
You could recoup the extra costs of the build, by letting tourists do photos for 5 bucks a pop. Denny's onto something here!
Ya know, I am looking for a way to suppliment my income..................:D :D :D
Don
Jackpot. Your all set. I'll put out flyers for you and keep an eye on the T if I get 35% of whatever you make. ;) I need some interior, brakes and engine work in my 46 Chrysler. :D
What income? :D :DQuote:

I'm starting to save money now that I don't go to Maine for lobster or New York for pizza........LOL Now all I have to do is find a place that has TexMex and I won't have to go to Dallas on Friday nites dinner.
BradC
Dan and I for the past 3 months had eaten takeout from the local Taco Bell probably 3 times a week or more. It isn't that we like it so much, but when we wrap up at the shop at 1 or 2 am it is the only place still open. (they close 2 am on weeknights and 3 on the weekends)
We both swore when these two cars were done that we would never ever eat a Taco Bell burrito again in our lives. However, my Spanish has improved tremendously.
So far this week we have had actual homecooked meals for a change. Great to be eating like real people again.
Don
Funny what this old car addiction does to your diet sometimes.:HMMM: When my wife is busy directing a show at school (Drama teacher) and my son and I are spending evenings in the garage, we resort to a lot of TV dinners. The good news is that it's cheap eating. At 99 cents each, I keep the freezer well stocked with mocrowaveable Banquet dinners...
By the way, Don, your son Dan wanted to see pics of my coupe under construction. If he does a search for J. Robinson in the galleries, there are 7 or 8 pages of pics. If he can't find what he wants to see, let me know. I may have additional pics that I didn't post there.:)
Thanks Jim, he did mention that and wanted to see them. I'll tell him.
Yep, I went to the grocery store one night and they had a sale on the Banquet dinners, 77 cents each. I bought like 30 of them, every variety. Nice thing is in 5 minutes you can nuke them and have a meal when you are too tired to cook. In fact, that will be my dinner right now, since you have reminded me.
Got ready for the carshow tomorrow by detailing mine and Don's T's today. He had to play all day and I knew he wouldn't have time so I did his too. This cleaning stuff is for the birds........took me about 11 hours to do both of them, but this will be the first local outting for both and I wanted them to look as good as possible. Supposed to be 1000 cars there the news said today, so it should be a good one. I'll post some pictures tomorrow night. Hope Don Garlits is there again this year, it was cool to see him walking around like a normal person last year. :D :D (I wonder if he ever wakes up and says "Wow, I'm Don Garlits." ) I would.

If you are serious, I would love to talk with you. Thanks for mentioning it.
Don
Man retirement is a bitch if you have to go back to work to rest!
hey don , i saw a pic of your bucket on the HAMB and came over for a peek. it took several nights but i've made it thru ALL 195 pages. i'm very impressed and love the look of both T's. i really like your sons RPU as well !!
Brick, yep, it's kinda like coming back from vacation and going to work to get a rest. I am actually missing work, and as strange as that sounds, I loved my job. It always gave me some purpose to my life and I knew what day of the week it was.
jbon64, you actually READ all the pages??? Wow, even I haven't done that. :o Welcome aboard this forum, and thank you for the nice words. Dan has renewed interest in his '29, and I see he as the new frame members mocked up getting ready for some welding. The frame should go pretty quickly, and I'm sure he will be posting some updates on the HAMB.
Don
Don---Everybody who wants to retire should be allowed to have a shot at it.---and then have the opportunity to go back to work!!! Retirement is fun for a while, and its great if you have a project to finish. But---and its a big BUT--what the heck do you do with all that time if you don't have a job to go to??? Alright---all you fellows who hate your jobs---I hear you. Maybe its better to watch the afternoon soaps and hang out at the WalMart, but for us lucky ones, who actually like (love???) our jobs, retirement ain't what its cracked up to be!! I worked for major companies all my life untill 7 years ago, when I started my own Engineering and Design Company. For the last 5 years I worked for other companies, I wondered what it would be like to be retired. Now I know. Sometimes, if things don't break just right, I go five or six weeks without a contract---and I friggin near go crazy!!! I don't really need the money (although it certainly doesn't hurt). Its just that without work, you run out of things to fill up the days. And all the time I'm trying to put in time, I keep thinking---Jeez, if I just had some work A---I'd be happy because I'd have something to do, and B-Damn, I'd rather be getting $XX per hour for doing something I like, rather than no $ setting around the house watching reruns of "I Love Lucy".
We had a terrific car show in Ft Myers today, they were projecting 1000 cars, but my number was in the 1100's and my Son Don was in the 1400's. They ultimately said 2000 cars and I believe it. I got there at 7:45 (Don slept in and came at 9 or so) and already it was jammed. I asked a guy who was in the front section how he got such a good spot, and he said they got there at 6:30AM!!
It was an open show, with no categories for trophies, so we had every make and model you can think of. Here are some pictures, lots of pictures:
There were some true old time drag cars there like this one.............
and this Mustang FX car........first long nosed one they said. That is a blown Ford in it.........very very loud!!!!!
Some nice hot rods too.
flames were big this year............
Rat rods were out in force too. The tub is my friends car........."Skanky". He just told me he put over 22,000 ,miles on it in two years. Last trip was over 4000 miles.
And finally, this Ford has every car show gimmick known to man.
Don
Brian, sorry, I was busy typing as you posted. :) You are absolutely right. The other thing is that I see myself slipping since I am not having daily contact with lots of people. I am not as sharp as I once was (Ok Uncle Bob, there is your opening   ) and I am feeling older too. No wonder people retire and die sometimes right after that.
I'm probably like you Brian, I have worked all my life and have been blessed with some great jobs. My last one at the marina was the best so far. They were always amazed that we didn't have to start until 8 and yet I would turn the key in the door at 7 or so, and stay until even 9 or later some nights. It wasn't work, it was fun and an extension of me that I am now missing.
It's time to end this little car building holiday and get back to some meaningful pastime. You can only watch so much Judge Judy.
Don
Oh, just found a couple of more pictures in the camera.
Don, about the only thing the '55 is missing is a set of fuzzy dice and bongos. :D

I am very interested, but don't want to bug you on the prospect. I know you have a pretty full plate as it is so we can do it on your timetable. I know also that you have a very high quality product, and from knowing you on this forum I am positive you would be a super guy to work for. Thanks for even entertaining the idea, I'm extremely flattered.
NTFDAY, no, the fuzzy dice were there too and I bet the bongos are in the trunk. It's really funny how some people make a major production out of showing their car, lots of props and stuff. Even the rat rod guy had a big rat on his roof................just so you would know it was a rat rod.
Brad, knowing the way you are, it was surprising you didn't show up.
Hey Don
Up late again, eh? Good luck on the job prospects. I feel lucky that I work a 32 hour week doing a swing shift at the hospital. Tomorrow my brake caliber brakets arrive, so I can finish the front disc conversion. I redid the rear drums, and wheel cylinders on Friday. So after tomorrow if all goes well, I'll get the booster on next. Thanks for your support. Steve.
[QUOTE=Itoldyouso]And finally, this Ford has every car show gimmick known to man.
Ya know, those little dolls of the kid crying were cute the first couple of times I saw one. After seeing hundreds of them, however, I am so sick of those stupid things I have threatened to get one and put it UNDER one of my front wheels whenever I park my coupe!    I like the dog peeing on the tire, though. I'd not seen that one before.:D
Steve, you are rolling along really well on yours. Looks like you are doing the important stuff in a logic sequence too. I've been reading your thread and enjoying it.
Jim, yeah, those things were funny the FIRST time. It was a nice little '55 too, and why they didn't just let the car stand on it's own merits is beyond me. I bet the casual non car spectator loved all of the gimmicks though. I have seen these people comment on the most inane aspect of a car and rave over it, whereas a real car person kinda snickers.
Something that we found amusing was that at a car show this big your car sort of becomes "just another car." However, Dan and I got bored and decided to drive my T around the show, going up and down the streets where people were standing and walking. The actual purpose of the drive was to take it to a pinstriper who was working the show and get some estimates. It was a totally different reaction, like they had never seen a car before.........cameras going, people pointing, questions, etc. I think the animation factor, actually seeing it move, played a role. We had more fun on that little drive than the rest of the day.
