My First Car Show

Well, I finally entered my first car show yesterday. Being the 4th, my wife gave me some flags to "decorate" the car. I didnt know what to do with them so I stuck them all in the engine bay. Sort of looked like an "American Muscle" theme...

I was sort of worried because every little imperfection on the car stands out like a sore thumb to me. But the car was well received, got a lot of curious looks and more than one surprised look when they peered under the hood and saw those giant orange valve covers.:) I guess the car has a little bit of the "sleeper" look. The older folks (50+....no offense :) ) seemed to take more of an interest in it.

Entering my second show this saturday...need to stay out of the sun this time :toocool: ...I am a little crisp.

Looks very good. Let's see a picture of those giant orange valve covers and what they are attached to. :)

I really like those wheels and small hubcaps on your Biscayne. Makes for an interesting sleeper. I'll bet you get a lot of surprised victims at the stoplight Grand Prix's. :) :) :LOL: :LOL:

Unfortunately I did not get a picture of it yesterday....I am still kicking myself. All my other pics are of the "unfinished" version...:(

It's not uncommon for folks to "not get" this style of car. Been there, done that (and well over 50:LOL: ) Keep the faith son and continue to lar'n them heathens 'bout the culture of sleeper.;)

Car looks great. I'm surprised you aren't running big block flags on the fenders. :) Is that to further the sleeper illusion?

Car shows can be fun if you go with the right attitude, and just have fun with it. Some people seem to take offense at every comment people make, and you just can't do that, some comments are just from people who don't know.

No, actually I plan on putting some badges on there (396 turbo jet). I spent awhile trying to decide whether to go with "283" and a set of "V" flags :cool: or the 396 turbo jet and opted for the latter (which I just got in the mail today). Putting them on should be fun....One reason I went that route is because this "living" project will eventually gravitate towards an L78'ish clone over the next several years. Plus, they are cool...I gravitate towards those badges like a fly on doodoo...my wife just thinks they looks pretty.

Yeah, I always liked engine designation flags on cars. When you look and see "396" or whatever, it just looks cool.

I put 5.0 emblems on my Jeep truck after I swapped in the Mustang engine. One day I could hear a kid in a ricer laughing about them to his buddy. When the light changed I didn't hear any more laughing. :cool: :cool: :cool:

Great looking 65. I had a 65 Impala ss but with the 327 300HP engine and 4 speed. Wish I still had it.:)

Excatly. Go to the show with the idea of having fun and meeting some great people, because that is what it should be all about, FUN.
By a tent, or make a quick friend at the car show with someone that has a tent:LOL:..

Isn't the first show a great experiance!? I still get a charge out of meeting everybody amd talking cars. Nothing like a 60's post car to make your blood boil! Nice looking car, looking awefull "CoPo"-ish eh? Very cool, I too would like to see a pic of the engine.

Yeah it was pretty cool driving in there...I was pretty much clueless as to what to do besides NOT run over any spectators...:rolleyes: It's funny seeing people check out YOUR car too...weird. I also spent more time talking than I did looking.:LOL:

65cayne, the people 50 and over are going to be some of your greatest fans, so get a chair and sit back and enjoy it. They are the ones who grew up with your car or maybe even owned one like yours and when they see it the memories will begin to flow. That's the way it is whenever I take my 57 Olds to a show. :D :cool:

However, when I take the 34 Plymouth to shows, people look at it, comment on it, but rarely know what it is. Most were not around when the car was built or on the road. After all it is a young 73 this year.:eek:

Here's an alternative to flags.
Then an engine shot you can "borrow", probably looks close enough.:D

I love a good sleeper, if it was mine I would put 283 flags on the fender, then 396-427-454 decals on the motor. That way you have the best of both worlds. Folks get a kick out of the trickery.

Believe me...I've gone back and forth on the badge issue for months now. But I am gonna go with the 396 badge to throw those a bone who would otherwise not come check out the car. The hub caps are here to stay.

For those wanting a pic of the "big orange valve covers", I entered my SECOND car show today and got a "Class Award" (equivalent to 2nd or 3rd place, and my first award ever !:) ) for the "60's CAR" class. Very surprising since there were some very nice cars in that class....must have been the hubcaps :rolleyes: ...anyway, here is how it looks under the hood...

Wow, Congratulations! Find a special place to display it as a tribute to your hard work! Engine compartment is looking good!

Hey Uncle Bob, Is that the motor in your (past) biscayne? Looks very nice! What kind of wire looms are those? I like how neat and compact they are.

Congrats 65.....always a good feeling when someone recognizes your hard work. Know I've posted this before....but one of the cars I truely miss is the little 65 Biscayne (dual quad 350/4 speed) that I built. It was just a ball to drive.

I ran mine with no emblems. Back in the day when bragging rights and few bucks were exchanged on a streeet race that's just the way it was. The posers would often take the emblems that were taken off and put them on their 283 cars :LOL:

In this day, I would run the emblems. Your not doing the street racing for dollars thing and it would in a very low key way let the knowing know that you do have something special.

If I remember correctly they're MSD Pro Clamp wire separators; http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...47783_-1_11365 as an example.

Another way to make separators that look pretty clean, and if you already have the supplies, you can make up without too much cost and effort is to use the small size wire ties. My choice would be black, but there's a world of options out there. I don't have a pic so I'll try a word-pic. You wrap one tie around a layer of wires. Let's say it's the 4 wire group since that will be the "toughest". Don't pull the end too tight at first. Then, between the wires you wrap another tie around the original tie wrap you started with. In the case of 4 wires you'll use three in between. Pull those tight with the clamping portion on the underside so it's not visible (same with the longer wrap around). You may have to practice a time or two to get the swing of it, but once done right it makes a nice, clean, not bulky setup. And you can dream up a number of ways to attach the bundle to keep them looking neat and not drooping onto the headers. Small descreet Adel type clamps on the lower valve cover bolts works nicely.
