Brad- Thanks, I think I'm stuck with Hot Rods!!
I would take up golf if I could drive a monster truck!!
how would they feel on the pro circuit if you pulled up in that thing lol
That's what I would need to find my ball :LOL:
I have been working on finishing the floor. It stops about 8 inches from the rear of the car. In that area I will build a firewall, behind that will be the gas tank, battery, and fuel system.
Also I got the firewall in. I made the bottom portion removable so It will drop down and slide out with the motor in place.
Ken
I bent a piece of 18 gage steel and cut slots in it so I could bend it to get the radius of the roof back in it's original shape, then screwed the roof to it and tack welded the slits back up. The roof will be filled with a smooth look. I'm not going to do this. it will be farmed out. The angle iron will be removed.
Another shot of the removable firewall. I'm working on the grill shell mounting bracket. the overfill tanks will be Incorporated into this.
Ken
Looks like you are getting a lot of the strength and shape back into the body. I keep forgetting to ask you, there was a period where you were having ignition problems with the roadster, did you get that figured out?
Don
Sometimes life just isn't fair, Ken.... You have 3 mills, and I don't have any.....:CRY::CRY:
The sedan is coming along nicely, gonna be kewl!
Don-What a hassle that was. It was a computer compatible issue. The computer was set up to recognize a magnetic pick up distributor, which I had in it for 4 years. When I decided to freshen the motor up I set it back to Vertex to have it checked. they called me and said they have a new one that used an internal coil, would I be interested in trying it. I was able to clean the motor up a little by getting rid of the coil and the wiring. But it used a different style of signal that my computer didn't recognize. So after a week of tearing this thing apart, the blower has to come off to get the distributor out, we finally figured it out. Vertex was really good to work with, they did everything they could to help.
Dave- You can come out here and bring all your drawings of what you want to build and you can use anything I have, if I don't have what you need I have friends that do. You can stay with us and I give you my wifes car to drive
Ken
Dave you better jump on this! His wife has a nice car too!
Looking good and productive! How's the 32 driving?
Steve- When is your next visit? I hope you can have more time for car stuff next time. There is 580 miles on it. It's mostly sitting, I haven't given it any time.
Ken
Ken I'm going in for a surgery on my palate in one month. Will be out of work for a few weeks eating up my sick time and vacation. I hope to be out your way next spring though! Who knows by then I may have made some progress on the truck!
Careful, I might take you up on that someday.... Getting plans ready to get my old tired butt moved to Texas.... Got to get out of here and get someplace where I can still be functional more then 4 months out of the year.... Once I get this move done, it's definitely gonna be travel and have some fun time!!!! Might even build myself a drag car for a change!!!!!!
any updates?
I haven't got much done, I have the motor mounts in. I'm going to put a mid set of mounts right in front of the transmission off the bell housing, because of the span between the front and rear mounts. I have more done but this is all I have in photo's at home. I'll post more next week. Thanks for asking.
Ken
Whose waterpumps are those on your engine Ken? You're right that is a long stretch between the front and transmission mounts. Midplate will help a lot. I think I have to do the same thing on the Olds engine and 350 turbo I have......also a long run that will put a lot of strain on the bellhousing.
Don
Don- I got them from Speedway, they say they redesigned them and they flow more and have stainless shafts and impellers, I think.
Ken
cool looking engine. I've never seen dual water pumps setup on a car motor. Looks like they are motor mounts too? How are things going Ken?
This is such a neat build! The roadster was a great car when finished, but the sedan is a totally different build and so interesting to follow along with as Ken progresses through the build. I am always looking toward each of Ken's posts. Great stuff!
You're showing your youth.:) All Ford V8 flatheads are basically the same in that design feature. One of the main reasons the first sbc's were put into so many early Fords as 55 to 57 sbc's have front mounts, but no side mounts and the only major problem was stock fuel pump clearance.
Yep flatties were fading away as I entered the auto world. Never really got a chance to see one or play with it! Still at 46 I feel old!:D:CRY:
Steve,
Try being 3 weeks away from 67. I still feel young in the head but the body keeps reminding me of my real age. With one brief hic-up, still in fairly good health. It helps to have a good looking same age wife who thinks the same way.
Jack.
Yep I hear yah Jack. I'm grateful for my health and my wife. I always wondered if flat heads were easier or harder to work on. When I was a kid I had a 1972 Honda 750cc motorcycle. It was super easy to work on. I'd take it across country with just a few bucks in my pocket to work somewhere far away for the summer. Never worried I'd get stranded or breakdown, and not be able to fix it myself. Today I have a 1989 Harley Softail, that I usually carry a cell phone, cash and credit cards, praying if anything happens, I'll be able to fix it. The harley engine just doesn't make sense to me for some reason? Always wondered if flatties are sort of the same? Steve.
Looks good to me. Workmanship is Aplus
I got a little more done. I really like it when people explain why they do certain things on their builds. So I thought I would explain the why and how I do a couple of things, hopefully it will be helpful.
A lot of the way this stuff is built comes from when I built my own race cars, they had to be light and easy to work on. That was the reason's then, now I'm just lazy. I don't like nuts as a way of securing bolts, I always try and thread everything I can. The general rule of thumb is you need the diameter of the fastener in depth of thread. (1/4 diameter bolt 1/4 of tapped tread) But when I'm making brackets I don't want to use 1/4 plate to thread for a small bracket, so I use 1/8" material then machine a bung with a step in it to get the required depth of thread. Then I weld the bung to the bracket.
I am mounting the grill shell and the head lights. I'm using the King Bee style. The other thing I always try and do is make every bracket have at least two jobs. The upper mounts will hold the grill shell and the hood mechanism that goes from the cowl to the grill shell. The next bracket down will hold the grill shell and the headlights.
Very nice stance Ken! It looks natural, which we all know takes a ton of work. Keep em coming!
The sedan is beginning to take on a "personality". It's showin its stuff. Looks very nice! I noticed the lower door patch panel. I have to do the same thing on mine and will have to use the full patch. They are Brookville and I hope the fit will be good. I'm dreading that job. Take care.
Ken,
Been following this off and on. Love that Ardun, can't wait to see the finished product. A friend of mine here in Issaquah runs a Ardun in a Henry's steel 34 3 window.
Looks awesome Ken,you will have to throw it in a box and send it down for next years Waihi Dust up...:D
That's all pretty cool, but why is the engine wearing falsies??
Sweet stance Ken, looks like it will corner good already! Those are Ardun heads right, those must be hard to find huh?
stovens- Steve I'm actually getting close to stopping on it and start the truck.
deuce4papa- Thank you, actually I think it's easier to replace it at the belt line, less distortion. Good luck I hate this part too!
Jack F- This is just a plastic mock up motor, The real one will be a surprise.
lamin8r- I wish it would of worked out when I was there, we are coming back so I'm going to time it to visit you.
Bob Parmenter- I was just trying to impress you :3dSMILE:
brickman-There easy they are made by Pyar plastics
Ken
Ken, the sedan is moving along very nicely, it's a shame you're going to put it on the back burner for a while but looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the truck.
BTW, it was nice to talk to you again this morning, Elliot did a great job helping me too.
Mike
One word to describe your Tudor Ken...........Bitchin'. :D:D What a great look.
Don
Since joining this site I have been amazed at the talent and workmanship of the fellow members. Ken's rides have been amazing.....makes me wish I had half his talent.
Ken with that large sunroof your going to get the top of your head burned.....lol
The sedan looks great.
Bradc
Please do,Ken.Give us a PM or e mail and let us know when you are coming..:cool:
It was nice talking to you also, I hope everything got handled.
Itoldyouso- Don, thanks a lot, it means a lot coming from you.
BradC-It's funny you said that. I have been kicking around the idea of putting a sliding cloth roof in it instead of filling it with steel. I saw a guy that used a top out of a VW bus, and it worked really well, when it was closed it looked like a stock style insert.
lamin8r- I sure will.
Work on the car has been slow. I made a list of everything I haven't finished that I started, and it was a lot bigger than what I thought.
I made a bolt yesterday that I couldn't buy so I thought I would show it in case someone else ever gets in this position. It hooks the sway bar links to the top of the ladder bar. The rod end is 3/8" and the top bolt on the ladder bar is a 7/16". So I took 4 SS bolts and drilled a hole in the center of two of them, then turned down the o d of the other two and slid one into the other and welded then together and put a couple of flats on the center so I could hold it to tighten the nuts.
Ken
more, installed
What I love about your builds are all the little one-off pieces that you make. Where I'd run a long bolt through that piece you fabricate a part that is something that looks like a factory made it. Very clean part Ken.
