Exhaust Cost

Well on my way home from work i stopped at the shop who put exhaust on my truck . I wanted a rough estimate on what it would cost to do the 31 Sedan. I had to take a step back when the guy said he didn't know till it was done . I said not even a rough idea i mean i don't want a $1200 exhaust bill . He still said not till it was done he mentioned master cyl. which i said will be on the firewall and only thing below will be battery and drive line .. I mentioned also it would be allmost a straight shot back with plenty of clearance . I heard he does some great rod exhaust but he must have never done a 31 Sedan with out somewhat a idea. I can see $400 maybe a bit more what you guy's think .

Depends on what you want. If you get stainless steel yes it might cost that much. Will you be supplying the mufflers?. Are you going to use you stock exhaust manifolds or are you going with headers?

Chevy no stainless just good ole alumipipe and some fairly inexpensive mufflers say about $75 to $100 apiece .

Did i hear a rumor of possibly some kits out for some A models .

OK figuring that there going to charge probably $60.00/hr labor, figure 2 hrs. and with what your going to put on, I'd say aroung $$600-$700

Well, I'm doing the exhaust for my pickup myself. I bought 6 pieces of mandrel bent exhaust tubing, various radius and bend angles on each, $20.00 a piece. Turbo Mufflers from Summit, $25.00 each. Two polished stainless tips from Summit, $19.00 each. 4 clamps and 4 hangers at the local parts store, about $12.00. They sure do charge a ton for labor!!!!!

Dave I did the same with my 37 and saved a bundle. I have a freind in NYC who runs a muffler shop and down there they charge, (are you ready for this**) ) $100.00/hr.

on my rpu, I furnished the flows, and mufler shop did shorty headers to tail pipe,145. i guess it makes a diff if you know what you are doing.

For what it's worth, I have 850 w/stainless muffs and tips on the Vette, took him 5 hours. 350 on the Mustang w/aluminum muff, 250 cat back w/stainless muff on the DD 4x4 and 800 on the Harley. Have not done the Plymouth yet, but I'm guessing 1000.....But hey, I'm a freak...:LOL:

68rat thinking of it a mustang is just about the same . Its a little longer but would be basicly run the same way . I have honed my pipe welding skill trying to keep my kids 94 blazer quiet so making my own may be in the works also now that i think of it .

I have a guy with a mobile bender that comes to my shop,
I usually supply the mufflers and any special connectors .
He has done systems with manifolds and headers . He supplys
the aluminized tubing and hangers . The cost about $200 to $300
and a couple of beers.

Two 50 series Flowmaster mufflers @ $90 ea (Summit)
Four U and J bends @ $14-16 ea (Summit)
One 10' length 2.25 aluminized tubing @$30 (Local guy)
Misc GOOD clamps and hangers @ $15 (Local Guy)
1 Roll of .023 weld wire @ $8
1 Tank of C25 @ $25
Misc hangers etc @20
And a lot of hours with my Sawzall, tape measure and welder @$000.00

This question was raised recently on another forum, and it seems prices for exhaust work is all over the board. Some areas were really high, and some were pretty reasonable. You have to shop around.

I paid $ 125 to have the exhaust system bent up for my jeep truck when I swapped in the Ford engine. I supplied turbo mufflers and they did the rest from manifolds to rear bumper. I thought that was very reasonable.

What you want to do is find a shop that doesn't think of it as "custom" work. The guy I went to is just a small town repair shop and he saw it just like doing any other car that needed an exhaust system.

I charge $120 hour for welding up stainless systems and I think we are probably losing money on it--I have to figure in the costs of much more than my time---stainless rod, argon gas for the torch and to feed inside to purge the tube, plugs and pieces for the purge system, bandsaw blades that are between $50-60, sanding belts, some material thats not part of the tube and bends, etc, etc

I see many jobs that were done low buck that the owner was never happy with, some that rattle and bang, some that are in the way of something else( brakes, fuel lines,oil filters, etc

On a side note---I have discovered that the late model Mustang(up to 04) muffler and tail pipe will fit up over an axle, around a coilover and line up down the frame rail clearing a fuel tank on 32-34 fords--you got to shorten the tip but works fine and there are many cat back packages that will give you muffs and pipes--good hanger system also

Please don't take this the wrong way but you are way too expensive for my wallet and many of the others here. I do understand that you are in business NOT to lose money and applaud that fact. I just cannot afford that kind of cash outlay for my hobby car exhaust system.

What you are talking about is basically a thousand to 1500 dollar system:

Figuring(guesstimated) 4-6 hours of fab time, is ~$450-700
A pair of small dimensioned SS Flowmaster Hushpowers is $320 (Summit)
Header connectors ~$100 pair(Burns SS)
U and J bends, 4ea 2.25/2.5 at ~$60 each(Burns SS)
Straight pipe at ~$35-40 per foot(Burns SS) (I used all 10 feet of my steel pipe)

Taking this to the low side, it is ~$1500 plus clamps and hangers - probably another ~$100 - 150 for SS.

How many aluminized steel systems can I Build for that, 3-4?? Mine has plenty of clearance everywhere, though I did elect to pass under the diff housing as I have a Model A as well but with a '32 style gas tank - so is real tight.

Using a Mustang cat back system gets you into crush type, cottugated bends - not what you really want on a 'performance car' like a street rod.

All the cat backs we have used have been mandrel bent--no convol bends--if someone wants that they can go across the street

The reason I do my own stuff is that I don't like what others do---we see lots of it here
The Mustang system I used was off my sons 04 mustang and I used it on my wifes 33---and its stainless

I find that most non ss systems are junk after a couple of years

As far as the perishable tools are concerned---bandsaw blades are ripped up pretty bad cutting thinwall tube, grinder/ belt sander discs /belts are $$$ argon is going up with all the hazmat/safty stuff, 308 rod----

Places like Burns charge $10 per inch of stainless weld on collectors/megaphones---A 3 inch tube is almost 10 inches around($100)

Ireland home done is good and the time spent im sure you did a fantastic job . If we did this everyday it would be faster.

Jerry your right as for being in business you have to figure in cost to do it . Like IC2 has mentioned though that type and cost of exhaust is not in this budget at all.

The Model A is a simple car for the exhaust--altho under the rear axle and a 32 type gas tank will be real tight
There is hardly any welding in your pictured setup so you wouldn't be at an 120 rate. You are only probably at about 3 hours with what you've done and even in SS you would only maybe double the material cost.

Dave --check around to see if you can find a Mustang take off--it will be simple to mount, is SS and will go over the axle and line up under the rear frame rail--only part to custom work would be manifold/header to muffler
the Mustang mufflers even have heat shields on them

In all fairness he has to see it. He wouldn't have given you a quote on your truck without seeing it either. Anyone that WILL give qoutes on unseen vehicles watch out for cause they're gonna get ya with the additional stuff explaining they were ballparking without seeing it.
