I am Dave, i ran out of metal, so this is as far as i got. After our talks on frame support, im gonna end up adding 3x the steel it started out with. Im gonna box the rail from the first crossmember to the subframe, and alot more gusset plates.

Yeah, think that would be a good plan... On a rig that size, a bit of extra weight in the right places can be nothing but good news.....
Sold a 48 Chevy to a friend and he subbed it with a Camaro. He said when he drove it over a bump it would swerve all over . After seeing posts like yours and others , Hotroddaddy i see he probably never reinforced it like it should have been done. This is great to see in progress and i get a good idea of whats really needed so maybe next car may not make me walk away if it needs one .
That`s funny you should say that,Bobby, the merc did the same thing, and no matter what i did to the front end, i could never get it to go away! Whoever did the clip on the merc did a bad job also. I put more reinforcments in, but it was still wrong!! This one should be strong enough when im done, but i would of liked to have done the original cutting of parts, now im just working with whats already been done, granted i could have left it alone, but i have to have em low!!
I finally got a sheet of 1/8" steel, WooHoo! Now i might get something done.
I bet you guys thought i gave up or something! Nope! Just have not had the cash for metal, but now i have a whole lot of it, and i can get back to work on this rig. I should get some progress in this weekend, i will post some more later, just thought i would post an update.
Yep figured you where stuck in here with alot of us and not getting to garage . Great your back on it , I'm staying up on this frame work your doing .
Unfortunatly work did not help in this one, but some hotrod buddies did though. I paid around 70 cents a pound for it, which is alot better than the home depot prices.
How did I miss this thread? DUH!:whacked: Anyway, nice work so far. Keep the pics coming.:D
There used to be a steel fabrication shop near where I worked and they always had a dumpster full of scraps. They let me dig around for what I could use and charged me scrap price (at the time about $.04 per pound).:D Wish I could find another place like that...
I got a little bit of work done last night. I decided to take dave`s advice and add a fish plate to the outside subframe connection, im glad i did, cause this seems like it will help alot! I also got one section of frame rail boxed in. It`s sure is nice to be able too this in one piece, instead of scraps like i have been doing.
Well i figured i would post an update, been awhile!
I got my lazy behind out there tonight and got some more welding done on the frame connection. I almost have the passenger side done now, then i can finish boxing in the rest. I have not decided if im gonna do the whole frame or not, im thinking just the front halve, and some gussets at the rear. I think the parts i have started will be enough to keep the twist factor down, its not like im going road racing in the thing! But i think im gonna add one more plate to the c-notch area, just for more peace of mind.
Hopefully i can get in the shop more often, but life seems to get in the way sometimes. I really miss having a car to drive, but i think in the long run, ill like this one better, even if it takes five years! at the pace im going, its gonna take that long.
John, this section looks so much better than when you started. Very nice work. :)
BTW, how is the new job coming?? Is that the grille from a 58 T Bird I see in the background?
Don
Looking good John!!!!! Don't let the time thing worry you.... I've had my '71 Ford pickup for 17 years, still have never driven it....
Thanks guys! And yes don that is a grill from a 58 bird you see, but its on a 59 bird.
As far as the job goes, its not so good! The guy turned out to be a real piece of work! He decided to renegotiate on his word without consulting me as to why, and kept taking money from me. Every week after the pay period ended, he would have his right hand man tell me they were taking $2 an hour. I was a little pissed after the first week, but decided to stay, after the second time, you can figure out what i told them! One of these days ill get it right. I have decided to go back to school and get my ba in construction managment, but with the wife working on her masters right now it`s gonna be awhile. Things are slow in the industry right now, but something will come along soon, so for now ive been doing lots of home repairs for the nurses the wife works with.
Ouch. Really sorry to hear that John. The job market really sucks right now. On the streets adjoining our shop there are signs all over "building for rent." Company after company has gone out of business. The upholstery guy who did my T was telling me the other day he has gone back to our landlord to renegotiate his rent because he isn't making it. Hope this starts to turn around pretty soon before it REALLY gets bad.
You will find your niche. You are a bright, personable guy and just need to find the right thing. I wish you well bud.
Don
Unfortunatly my niche is construction, but ive been trying avoid it these last few years. I guess i just need to bite the bullet and realize that its what i do, its what i know, and its what im good at. My dillema now , is im at the top of my game, and i cant figure out how to go higher. I cant get any better than i already am, there is not a thing out there that i cannot frame, i was the youngest guy to ever get hired as a building inspector for duval county, and probably the whole state! I beat out 57 applicants, most were gc`s or superintendants, to get that job! For the life of me i cant figure out why i cant get further in my career, not to toot my own horn, but you cannot find a better framer than me, ill put myself aganst any framer in the state!! But no one will hire me to take the next step , thats why ive decided to go back to school, once i get a degree, i will be unstoppable!
You gotta come up here to Calgary. The construction market is booming so out of control you can't get anyone and the people you get don't know what they're doing. The foreman will drive to work sites and offer more money to guys that will come help them. The Tim Hortons coffee shops are paying $15/hour with full benefits. Dump truck drivers in Fort McMurry are making over $100 grand a year:eek: . Problem is you'd have to learn what snow is:) .
Sean
If i could sell my house, i would be headed your way!! Me and the wife have been talking about getting out of the good ol usa anyway. She`s from upsate NY so she knows about the snow.
My girlfriends sister is a Nurse as well, she's always getting called in for overtime. They just finished building a new childrens hospital so they have to staff it also.
The down side is housing prices are getting pretty high in the city. I bought mine for $140g 10 years ago now it's appraised at about $650! I keep thinking I should sell and move to Florida:D . Maybe we could work a trade:LOL: .
Sean
Problem with Florida is that you get most of your pay in sunshine.
Don
Sounds like some of my stillborn projects. :LOL:Quote:

Alas, a New World Order
I knew there would be others who understood the time deal!!!! About all that's left to do is paint the box, put the seat in, and hook everything up.... Got to get it done and up for sale in June, the Ranchero needs a large influx of $$$$$$$$.!!!!!!Quote:

Well i got a little curious and decided to google it, but the only thing that pops up is a surf shop in melbourne which is where i got the truck from. I called the shop this morning ,and the guy says he got the truck about ten years ago and put the logo on it and parked it out front, but about 8 years ago an elderly driver lost controll of her car and t-boned it in front of the shop. He says the insurance company totaled the truck, and he has not seen it since. i told him mine only had a small spot on the passenger side, and he says it must have been repaired, but theres no way mine has been fixed, there`s no evidence to support that, so now im even more curious as to the origins of my truck.
Sure do wish Jacksonville was a bit closer and fuel a bit cheaper, I'd like to talk you out of that panel!!!!! Friend on mine has a lead on one similar out in the wilds of Monatana...... hopefully he'll get in touch with some photos soon....
How's your's coming?
still piddlin around on the frame. Been short on time lately, and dealing with other stuff, so been away from the garage alot. Fortunatly by the grace of god, things seem to be looking up for me , so i should be back at it soon.
Good to hear things are getting back to normal, sure is gonna be a fun one!!!!!
Yeah its gonna be real fun! I did mess with the vw a little the other day. cant get the fuel pump working, so i guess it needs a new one. With the gas prices i need to get it running, would save a hell of alot of dollars!
I finally got out to the shop tonight and got some work done, its been way to long. Hopefully i will get my steam back and get alot knocked out. I removed all the front suspension parts and lots of wire wheel action the last couple of hours. For some reason ive been dreading doing this, so thats part of the reason i have not done much, but its all done now! Not much worth posting pics of, so ill get some up when i get the frame clean, welded and sprayed. Im gonna spend forever blasting the a-arms and other components. Ill post more later.
Well after a long pause im gonna start at it again. After doing the chevy kinda got me going on body work, i burned out doing the frame work so now im gonna start on the door repair. i scored two sheets of 20 guage steel so i have plenty of supplies.
Glad to see you back at it. Will it make it to Turkey Run next year? (Ya gotta have goals!):D:LOL::LOL:
It`s a possibilty Mr Robinson, really depends on how much time i can devote to it. I did get a pretty good start tonight though. It really kills me how much rust is on this thing, i knew it was bad when i looked at it, but now that i really have to deal with it im starting to wonder what i was thinking!
If i can keep focus i think i will be ok, ive really had the desire to hit the bars lately, so im hyping myself up to get going on this, in the long run it will be a better decision, the club scene does nothing but keep me broke and gets me in fights, so beating on metal is much more rewarding. Well here`s some pics of tonights efforts.
I thought about cutting out that whole door support out but i decided it would suffice with adding a brace to it. I tacked the outer skin on, now i have to deal with the inner mess, but thats ok i have a 12 pack and a saturday night.
Im gonna take alot of pics of this door, but will not post the others. I thought it might be nice for guys that have never done this to get an idea of what needs to happen. In all honesty this is my first door rebuild too so bear with me. With my limited knowledge and tools this will be a good refference for other beginers.
HRD glad to see you back at it , been wondering how is been going . Did you bow that skin like that ?? I need to hang in your guys shop to learn some more metal skills like that .
I basicly bent the edges on my brake to make the edge flange then i threw it in the shrinker to create the radius in the panel. It had a radius in the bottom and the sides, i put it in the door opening to check the curves to make sure they fit.
I have learned every thing i know from this site, the fine folks here have shown me more than i ever could have learned by myself! I am a little embarrased to show my work on this site because of the mass of perfection that is displayed here!
I'm really glad to see you back at it John. Looks like some good progress to me.
Welcome back! Nice looking repair, keep up the good work.
I did a little tinkering today, had to cut more rust out but i think i can make the new panels fairly easily. I started the hinge side, then im gonna get to the bottom side. The corners are still boggling me a little, i dont think ill be able to do them in one piece, but we`ll see what i can come up with.
