5. The Olds/Pontiac rear end was used way before the 9 inch Ford got popular

7. Chevys had the little window in the cap that let you adjust the point gap (dwell) without removing the cap. HEI did not get introduced until about 1974 (could be off a year)

8. QuadraJet introduced on the big block Chev and the OHC Pontiac six cyl

10. The lightweight cars had a seat belt strap with a snap to hold the window up. It had two positions, up or down.

NTFDAY already answered #1, but I grew up in Chattanooga,TN and spent a lot of time hanging out at Honest Charleys. Read this funny post about Honest Charley that I put in another thread, it's message #4.

Line Loc was a Hurst item. B&M did the beef job on the GM four speed hydramatic...a monster heavy transmission.

You essentially got question 4 about the Hurst alignment...Hurst gave you an "L" shaped tool that was made from round material and fit into the notch in the shifter body. Everyone lost it so they used a screwdriver, hex key, or drill bit. I still have my Hurst tool but I never could find it to align the shifter!

Your #9 answer is not right...unleaded came in about 1973. Something else happened that changed gas pumps in about 1980 or so.

WOW, Jay got 4, 5 and 7. Some people called the road flares by the name of "smudge pots". The flares were really hard to see at night because their flame was so small. They also caused grass fires. You never see them anymore...antique stores just don't stock the greasy stuff.

Warshawsky was the guy who founded J.C. Whitney. They published the same catalog with the Warshawsky name and the Whitney name. Their building occupied an entire city block in Chicago (may still). If you bought some amount from them, you received about a million catalogs a year or so it seemed.

A friend and I built a street Fiat coupe in '66-'68. We bought a lot of stuff from Honest Charley for that car! Good times. :-)

#9-isn't that when they added the 9/10 to every price? (guessing)

#9 more digits for over a buck a gallon and around the time they went digital instead of the mechanical odometer like display.... pump handle hung at side now it hangs in front? .... the 9/10 has been around almost forever and used to be the tax on a gallon of gas

IN about 1980, gas went over 1.00 a gallon but pumps could only price up thru .99 per gallon. Remember that, for the interim, they set the pump at half price and then doubled the total line.... then, laws were passed saying that pumps MUST read full price. This obseleted a lot of pumps overnight.

I have 3+ complete sets of "3 flares & and a mount", of the canister type that use to mount on the side of pickups & trucks. 1 set came on my '37 chevy pickup & 1 came one my '47 KB2 International, I bought the rest.

Before the Olds we used 3/4 ton truck rearends. They had steep gears, were unbreakable, plentiful and cheaper than buying a set of Zoom gears, a spool and a set of Henry's 10 spine axles. Just cut the centers out of the truck wheels and weld them into two wheels that had been split and widened and then mount a set of 9.50-15 firestone recaped M+H slicks and take it to the track.

I'm gonna venture a guess on #2. How about it meaning LL, for left lane?

I suppose if lane choice had to be communicated back then, it would tell the starting line crew what he had chosen.

Sorry. never heard of it, but I assume you mean a redlight, or jumped the flag start.

BTW, My first year at Indy was in '62. I know Bob Beezer was there doing raindances on the starting line, but can't remember if they had gone to "the tree", or were using a flagman. I'll have to do some research.

"update" According to Draglist, the "tree" came in '63.

I could be wrong on this one but the early Chrondek lights that had a stage light and a green were called LL trees (for leavers lose). They didnt count down, the starter triggered the green with a switch box.

Well I suppose I've been called a lot worse names by the "ex", than "trivia encyclopedia"! :-)

1. ??? (I'm a Chevy guy)
2. outlets in the exhaust that could be opened to bypass the mufflers.
3. Break down the tire bead, and tuck them between the tire and rim.
4. station wagon?
5. If you didn't use the twist-ins, it was the "H"-shaped rubber blocks. They also made hard rubber spacers to go under the spring.
6. I would guess it's either the gas tank. (..or a "pot" stash if you lived near the border.) :-)

9. 421 2X4 Super Duty engine, Aluminum "doghouse", and I think the "swiss cheezed" frame. They were sometimes called "swisscheeze Pontiacs".
