Cragar SS wheels??
I have owned them a number of times on a lot of cars over the years. The last set I bought new in the mid 80's. Complete crap w pitting and white powder in the corners inside of three month's + Peeling by the following spring. They had minimal Home to show or drags to home milage.I cleaned w recommended polishes/cleaners,stored inside in unheated garage all winter from Oct to April + never saw snow/salt.
As I do w ALL of my custom wheels on my cars, coated w wax for the over winter storage + Still got the corrosion!
I swore I would never own another set. BUT here it is 20+ years later and I am into the nostalgia thing in a big way. So Now I am considering them again.
My question- Have they gotten any better in quality? Still pit, craze and peel unmercifully? Are the Keystones or Supremes any better? I want a chrome five spoke design. But NOT the AR TT styles (WAY too over done now for my taste, altho I love the look) and I despise any kind of billet alum wheel.Last edited by Dgas56; 01-12-2009 at 08:14 AM.

Have Some on my 1965 Mustang . The Chrome Looks good . But I just do not Like the Look of them . Can't Wait to replace them with Black Rims with Hub Caps .Wisdom is acquired by experience, not just by age

I had a set on a 74 Maverik.. oh, about ten years ago. Quality was good. My only beef was that the lugs were too close to the center hub. Too easy to gouge the hub ( especially with a chatter gun ).
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Maybe I'll give them a shot again. I really like the looks but you have to put them on the "right" car IMO, mostly GM's and they are more from "MY" era. 1965-79 were the "hot" years for them. Sure thing as I posted they are Ford Bolt Pattern . I think 14" up Front and Wider 15" in the Back . I just want the stock Look for that Mustang .Wisdom is acquired by experience, not just by age

Most of the late Cragars since the mid seventies are uni pattern 4 1/2 to 5". Are the holes slotted at all? Talk to you about them over at home.

I bought some 2-3 years ago for my Chevelle. Still uni-lug and looked great no issues at all. A little dirty from our dirt driveway but as good as the set I bought 30 years ago and still have.

Far as the Cragar's, don't know if the quality has improved or not. Many moons ago I gave up on them too and went with the slotted mags and Torq Thrusts for the cars that justified the big $$$ for wheels. Problem is, I still love the looks of the Cragar SS wheels!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I am there too, same issue,same story. Its on hold right now, But i think i'll give them a try again eventually They are actually more reasonably priced than new of the AR fives or Alum slots now..

ive been building up a little collection of the cragars lots of old 14 inch around not so many of the 15 inch. I have had good luck blasting them and painting them a good dull silver 2 stage, works pretty good for a guy on a budget The one i have bought i paid no more than 10.00 apiece for the 15 inch 8 inch wides

Tango I'll be glad to take that old 289 and 4sp off yer hands when the 350/350 goes in. nothing worse than tripping over old engines and parts in the garage.
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
