It's looking good Don, when do you have to get it finished by?
Kurt
Thanks Kurt. I was shooting for Oct 25th for the Billetproof Drags, but that is probably not going to happen. But I really would like it done for Turkey Run in Daytona Beach over Thanksgiving in November. I think I can make that one.
On a side note, I also think Dan's car might really, actually make it in November too! :D We worked on cutting and rolling beads in his floor last night and we got one side all done when I left at 4 AM. He stayed until who knows what time, so I suspect he got a lot more done on the other side. Some guy is making his bomber seats right now and they should be done this week. The plan is to epoxy prime the subframe before we rivet in and seam seal the floor panels into place.
I didn't want to get right down to the wire on either car, but for some reason it always works out that way.
Don
Don; That because now matter how much you do you'll always be looking for ways to improve what you've already done. I other words it's a never ending love.
But then you probably know that better than me.
Kurt
I miss the PINK.......
Don, I hope to see it in person this year.....LOL
Save a turkey sandwich for me.
Bradc
Yep Kurt, I don't think a hot rod is ever really "done." They keep cranking out "stuff" we just have to have. :D
Just for you Bob I'll make sure there is at least on PURPLE part on the car. (somewhere under the carpeting or something):p:)
I think this might be the year we finally run into each other Brad. We are going to have to plan something so that happens.
I didn't get a whole lot done today because I am held up until the guy who is going to build my center section gets back home. I thought it was today, but his website says the 18th, Tuesday. I'll be on the phone with him first thing Wednesday and get that thing ordered. I'm going to sit down with a speed/rpm calculator tonight and see what ratio I really want. 4:30's are my pick right now, but I want to crunch 4:10 to 4:88 and see what differences those make.
One thing I did do today was put on the SoCal front stabilizer shock. I have never run one but so many people swear by them that I had to try it. They either come in red or chrome and I wanted it to be as unnoticeable as possible, so I sprayed it black and got it mounted. Here are a few pictures. It doesn't stand out as much as I feared.
Most of the day was spent helping Dan do his floor in his RPU. He got the second side cut, all the holes for the rivets drilled, and we rolled the same beads in it that we did on the passenger side. I think it looks pretty cool, too bad carpeting will hide the four days he has in making patterns and finally bending up and cutting the two sides. But at least he will know it is there. :) Here are some pictures of how the floor came out.
Don
4.30's??!! Don, are you running an overdrive trans? Or are you building this car to just cruise around town?
Dan's metal work looks impeccably neat as usual. You're right, it's almost a shame to hide it under carpeting. His patience and eye for detail are amazing...
Thanks Jim. No, it has no overdrive, I know what you are thinking, 4:30'S or similar might be a little deep. It had 3:70's and they were nice highway gears, but I always felt I could use some lower gears for around town. The 30 inch back tires were the reason, I think. I may regret buying low gears, but I want to try them just to see how much better the launch is. The cam I am going to run doesn't come in until like 2500 rpms, and that is a factor too. If they are too low I'll put the 3:70's back in.
Don
I got a 70 ford pick up that we put power steering in and that thing was all over the place on the interstate, could not hardly keep it in one lane.
Put a stabilizer shock on that and it's about 50% better then it was.
Kurt
Both look like their coming along nicely
the floor is beautiful, I agree it's a shame to hide it.
I would like feedback on the shock once you get it on the road, getting close to starting on my A Sedan and debating the shock against a cross steer rack
nice as always :)
On the stabilizers, I have seen lots of discussions on various forums about death wobble, and each time lots of people come back and say the stabilizer cured it. I didn't have dw with the 27 except for one brief period, but that cleared up with a toe in change. So Cal says no car has left their shop in 30 years without one installed. I figure it can't hurt. Dan is putting one on his 30 RPU too because he is running 16 inch bias plies and they are notorious for handling issues.
BTW, I did some rpm/gear ratio checks, and at 60 mph here are the various rpms I would be turning:
3.70......................2486
4.10......................2755
4.30......................2890
4.56......................3064
4.88......................3279
I think from that 4.30's will still be my choice.
Don
Wow that's quite a difference from top to bottom! I guess you have to decide what you will be doing most and adjust from there. I went 3.0 on the truck because to get anywhere from here, it's on the hiway you go!
But for a local cruiser with some burnouts in it's future, that's a whole different story.
On the steering stabilizer where does the other side of it mount to? I can see where you attached it to the steering arm, but is it attached to the frame on the other side?(oops went back and clearly saw the answer in the pic!) I use to run one in my manual steering jeep cj-7, that had a set of 33" tires on it. Boy what a differene that made when you hit a bump or cattle grate, before the stabilizer, the wheel would spin so violently it could break your arm if you held it wrong! Afterwards it's was a lot milder, but still a potential arm breaker!:D
I also wanted to say a big WOW on Dan's sheetmetal work. Too bad they don't make sheer carpet!
Thanks Steve. Yep, Jeeps have a similar problem with dw from what I understand, especially with big tires.
Don
Dan's floors are looking great, as everything else his done. Your rebuild is looking fine can't wait to see it at the Turkey run.
BradC
Thanks Brad. This year we Florida guys are going to find you once and for all. I suspect you always leave your car at the airport in "short term parking."
I got a hold of my center section guy today and it's going out tomorrow. :D I decided on 4.30's. It is a trac-loc rear that he modifies to not click on turns and generally behave better. We bought the same unit for my Son Dan's RPU, but he is running 4.00 gears and an automatic transmission.
He is a really super guy to deal with and his warranty begins when you get the car on the road, not when you buy the center section. He is a hot rodder too and if any of you saw an Ardun powered roadster that spun out and did doughnuts at 190 mph at Bonneville this year, that is the car he was involved with.(did you see that one Bob?........it wasn't pink, so maybe you missed it. :p)
If it should by some stroke of luck show up Friday I can have the 27 up on all fours by the end of the weekend. BTW, Dan posted some pix of his RPU on the HAMB, and in case anyone wanted to see how it looks now, here are a few pictures.
Don
Lookin mighty fine. Can't wait for the videos of the three amigos driving all of their own cars!:D
Thanks Steve and Bob. You are right Steve, I can't wait until the three of us can go out for a little drive. I keep telling Dan he has NO idea how that Olds is going to feel when he puts a little gas to it..........he's in for a real treat. :D
Bob, the other night I was reading one of my car books, Hot Rods of the 50's, and there were two cars in there I was going to shoot pictures of and post just for you. One was a purple deuce coupe that had a pink and white interior, and the other one was a totally pink deuce roadster. Neither was exactly my cup of tea, but they weren't all that bad either. So, you saw that roadster spin out, huh? He said they all took turns driving it and the mechanic was the one who turned the best speed, but was also the guy who spun out at 190. He says next year they are taking three Keith Black alcohol motors and shooting for 300 mph. The three motors are of various sizes and will run different classes. I have got to go to Bonneville some year. From your pictures it looks like you had a great time. Everybody swears by it.
Don
Don - Did you say that the Billetproof drags are Oct. 25th? That's a Sunday. When I go to the Billetproof site, the info on that event says "coming soon". There are no details... Anyway, that same weekend is the Daytona Dream Cruise. It starts Friday night and runs to Sunday. Saturday is the big day, of course. You can check it out here: http://daytonabeachdreamcruise.com/ . That could make for a fun weekend; cruisin' on Saturday, racing on Sunday.:D
Don;
On the stabilizers, I won't say I am totaly happy with my front end now, but I can live with it. My problem may just be that everything is brand new under it, and it is super tight. I was wondering to slow the pump down a little could I use a differant pully wheel?
I'm thinking, the thing has to much pressure.
I like dan's floors too but I am more impressed with the trany tunnel.
In my 65 Ranchero I used flat bar and boxed the trany tunnel and also tied in my front
safety loop for the drive line in to the flat bar. This is gonna be a street strip car.
Have not started the sheet metal work yet though, but the shifter and linkage for the trany has already been made and mounted. It was a little tight for that C - 6 but the linkage that I fabed works real smooth anyway. Kurt
Don; You get anymore work done on you car lately.
I know it's hard to work on the car and be posting
photo's of it too. Kurt
No, I'm kinda on hold until the rear center section shows up. It was shipped Wednesday and should be here Monday. I guess this weekend I'll try to find something to do on it, maybe start sanding and prepping the body. But I really want it as a roller so I can move on to the next step of building the engine.
I've also got some small stuff coming from Speedway (new hubcaps, etc) and those should come Monday too.
Don
Haven't had anything to post regarding my 27, but the center section showed up at work Tuesday. When I saw the UPS truck pull up the guys I work with said they've never seen me move so fast! :D I LOVE getting boxes from the big brown truck.
The guy who built it is the same guy who built my Son Dan's 9 inch rear, and he does a really nice job. I got the same Trac-Loc one Dan got, but ordered 4.30's and he got 4.00's. His Olds has more torque than my sbf will have plus mine is a stick, so it should pull fine with this ratio.
Plan is to get it up on wheels this weekend, then start ordering my engine parts. Here are the only pictures I have to post.........pitiful I know, but I am going into thread withdrawl and needed to show some progress regardless of how insignificant. :o:D
Don
Hey Don ...... something is better than nothing ...... and that is what I've got done lately.
Your WAY ahead of my progress.
Paul
Heck I'd be happy with that Don.
I'm trying to figure out what my first project is gonna be
on the 1930's LeBlond metal lathe I just got set up in my shop.
Decision's, Decision's, Decision's. Kurt
Paul: I moved something on my dresser the other night and the T shirt I owe you is STILL there! :o You ought to be glad I don't owe you money! I am so sorry. How about I hand it to you at the Billetproof Drags?
So you haven't made any progress lately? Man, you were cranking it out there for a while. Oh well, good things take time.:)
Kurt: How big is that lathe? Post a picture of it. Most of those from back then were all cast iron and HEAVY. I was offered one at work a few years ago and turned it down because I couldn't figure out how to move it and where it would go in our shop. It was off of a WWII battleship and our forklift couldn't hardly pick it up. I shoulda taken it for scrap value alone.
I made a little more progress on the 27 today...........I took an air hose and blew off the dust. My progress gets more pathetic all the time.:o
Don
Can't move too fast on these things Jim. :D The other problem is that this Summer has been unusually HOT! Most days it's over 90 in the shop and even a bunch of fans only moderately help. Every day we hope it will rain like mad to drop the temp a little. Can't wait for fall.
Don
Finally got around to doing some work on my 27 this weekend. The only thing keeping it from being a roller was for me to install the new center section in the rear end, slide in the axles, and rebuild the back brakes. Got all that done and it is now officially a roller. :D I pushed it forward and back a couple of times just to make sure it would really move................hasn't gone that far in 9 years.
Now I can start building the engine. I spoke to a tech guy at Scat this past week and picked his brain on 331 stroker kits vs 347 stroker kits. At the end of that discussion, plus what I have been researching on line, I called Summit and ordered the 331 kit. I really didn't need those 16 extra cubes, and some people say the 347's have a shorter life and can use a little more oil. Don't know if that is true, but I went with one that should still run great and maybe live just a little longer on the street. Supposedly the compression with my 58 cc heads should be about 10.5 - 11. I thought that would be high for the street, but the guy at Scat says it will be fine.
The kit should show up on Tuesday. Then I have to start figuring out the rest of the components I want to use. I am pretty set on a Motorsport X303 cam, Comp cam one piece pushrods, and Comp Cam roller rockers. I have Harlan Sharp roller rockers for my 460 and they are nice, but I have read some good things about the Comp Cams rockers, so I am going to give them a try.
For a couple of reasons I am going to reuse the 69-70 DOOE B heads I ran on the 302 in the 27. I called my machinist and explained I was on the fence on using these vs some aluminum heads. He is a Ford fanatic and really knows his stuff, and his feelings were to go with the Ford heads, but do some reworking on them. Aside from bigger intake valves he is going to install guide plates and screw in studs. I think I am going to use Comp Cams springs and retainers too. Later on, once my wallet recovers, I can always add a set of aluminum heads if I want to. I think the HP this one will make will be plenty for me..........should be much more fun to drive than the 302 I ran for years in it.
My time goal is to have the motor put together and in the car by the end of September. Maybe even fired up for the first time by then. Then I can concentrate on getting the body prepped and painted.
Here are some shots from tonight of how the car now sits. It will drop down a lot once the motor and body are on it.
Don
Lookin good Don.
Hey Don ....... It'll have to be at the TRR. I have the patients of Jobe ..... not an ossue or biggie.
Yes - I was whole hog on it then school started & work schedule changed a bit & I got a bit derailed. I'm back on it soon as work is slowing down so it'll afford some time to start up again. Its not like I don't have 7K parts waiting to be added to the car.
I've even contemplated removing the engine from my old SK boat & setting it up for a BBC. My "new" '78 chev. S10 is SBC powered so a "spare" in the garage won't hurt.
I'll get some pix soon. I also had a directional change, before I bought or wasted time on the middle frame area. I AM going round tube. It's just easier to fab it up than C channel stuff.
Your rig is coming right along though. GREAT job so far.
Paul
Thanks Steve and Paul.
Ok Paul, I'll hold your shirt until TR. It was an extra small, right?:) See what happens when you have your coupe in a rod shop that does all that neat HP stuff, it rubs off. Pretty soon you will have a clone of Fat Jacks coupe if you don't watch.:D
Tomorrow my stroker kit shows up. I'm like a kid on Xmas eve. You would think at my age I would be over that kick you get when the UPS truck pull up, but noooooooooooooooooo! :o
Don
Oh ...... you don't know how Fat Jack influenced me on my decision to purchase my specific coupe.
Had I not already had 2 pro street cars in the past this would be wearing FJ orange. That cover (in 1985) still haunts me & I've had to stay focused to continue with what I wanted it for in the begining. See you on the salt.
Paul
Nice car that is too. Checked out a few youtube videos and found this pic for yah Regs
http://image.hotrod.com/f/9747780/hr..._hot_rods+.jpg
I love that coupe and Morelands 40 also.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZyioNpUBwg
Don
Ahhhhhhhhhhh ........ Don has seen my project ........ I don't think that the paint will EVER be as slick as the FJ46 but the underpinnings & driveline will be stout!.
Don ..... you know what I'm talking about.
But let us dygress ....... back to Don's build. mine is in another thread.
Paul / aka Ratty 46
I think Don should paint the new (rebuild ) UPS brown............LOL
BradC
Hey Don; As for the heat in the shop, I know exactly what you mean.
I can't go out in my shop during the day, It's like 150 degrees in there
with 100% humidity. Me and the wife have been watching for some good sales on window AC unit's. I'll have to cut a hole in one of the wall's because I don't have
any windows in the shop. The Lathe I got is a 1930 Regal Leblond about 12 feet.
I think the usable part is inbetween 7 and 8 feet though.
They did some modifacations to it though with a big plate beside the gears with the motor and a two speed trany. The motor was down sized from a 3 phase to a 2 phase
motor. But they gave me the 3 phase motor too, in case I wanted to use it.
And it is all cast iron too, Wish I could find another one so I could get some extra
stuff for it. Mine is missing a steady rest and a few other nick nacks I'd like to have.
Kurt
Ya know Paul, I have this neat flathead engine and drivetrain that I could make you a super deal on............bet it would fit right in that 46 of yours! Yep, your car is going to be well built. I sure hope you get cracking on it, I want to see it at Billetproof or TR soon.
Brad: I know what you mean, UPS brown is becoming my favorite color.
Kurt: You could turn driveshafts with that baby! That must be some lathe. Can you imagine what it would cost to buy that one new today? If you keep watching EBAY I bet you will find those missing pieces in time.
Well, the UPS truck showed up today and I got my stroker kit........man is it pretty.:D Has these short little pistons that I guess strokers need to clear the crank on the downstroke. This weekend I am going to start putting it together and next week I should have made up my mind on the rest of the parts I need.
Met a super nice couple tonight. I sold my 39 Dodge pickup cab on Ebay and they drove down tonight to pick it up. We are just out of room in the shop and some stuff had to go, and I am so glad Alan and Nancy got it, they are really excited to get started on it and I am happy to see it go to someone who will appreciate it. I figured I will never live long enough to finish the ones I have left, so it is better to see it go to someone who might actually finish it. And we picked up a lot of room in the shop because I threw in the frame as we are going to build a new one for the RPU when I get around to it.
Don
