Hey Don .... this sounds great. Don't forget the YOUTUBE when it's fired.
Paul
My fuel system parts showed up this morning from Summit so we went to the shop and while Dan was working on his RPU I got the electric pump, filter, and progressive linkage installed. Finally tonight we fired it back up for the first time since I tore it all the way down. THERE WERE NO STRANGE NOISES THIS TIME!! :D:D
Not sure what the knocking was the last time, but I strongly suspect the mechanical fuel pump eccentric. Even with the exhaust capped up the motor sounds just like it should. Even that "stroker knock" Keith Black and Scat told me I might have didn't exist when it was cold or hot. My mufflers are a little quieter than I would like, but I can address that later on.
I let it run for about 20 minutes, oil pressure is right at 50 lbs idling, and it never got over 180 degrees. Now I can start sanding the body and getting ready for paint. I think I'll sleep pretty well tonight. :) And just for you Paul, I'll do a YouTube.
Don
Well done Don! Now post a video, but without any head scorching!:D
I still remember Don Jr.s fireup! Ouch! It is great to hear problem solved. What a relief. I was just talking to a few hot rod locals in the show today about your last project and how nice it turned out. I think I even convinced a friend to buy classic 27 roadster for sale!
Thanks Steve. Yep, Don still remembers that little burn on his head. We were replacing his brake light switch on his T yesterday and he kept reminding me to stay away from the hot headers. I told him he sounded like the voice of experience.
Don
That's one of the best things about this forum, helps keep us safe!
I just remember little stuff that I file for later thinking, better remember that!
Maybe you'll get a chance to do a video soon, tomorrow I'm out to the shop to work on the poor neglected truck, nothing like a car show to inspire us to work on our own stuff!
Good to see you re-focusing on this ..... Let me know when the tube is up. I love stroker engines. They sound soooooo kewl.
Paul
Steve, yep, going to a car show gives us a little kick in the tail to get moving on our own stuff.
Paul, I have to admit, this isn't the quietest engine I have ever seen. Yesterday it was quiet but today after it had cooled down I fired it up again and there are definitely some mechanical sounds going on in there. Once it got up to a higher operating temp it did quiet down, but it looks like Scat and Keith Black might have been right about stroker noise when cold. I can see how that would be, the pistons are so short and hang about 30% out of the bore when all the way down, so they have to rock a little in the bore.
But oil pressure is great, it rpms like gangbusters, and the cam sounds nice and lumpy, even with capped up exhaust. I let it idle again today for another 20 minutes or so, and I guess if there were a problem I would have seen it by now. So I'm done worrying about it, just going to get the body done and start driving it.
Oh, by the way, Dan and I went to the local PPG store yesterday and he bought the etch primer and DP90 so we can start shooting his body. I think once he sees the body in some color other than the bare metal it has been for a long time it will push him to get it done faster.
Don
Good to hear on all counts. Keep us posted!
Pops car sounds great!
And yes I can still hear the sizzle of my head hitting the hot lakes header................ Or was the the sound of laughter from Dan and Dad when it happened...........The memory is a little fuzzy now:whacked::LOL:
I'm down to the part of building a car that I hate the most.........BODYWORK! :( I hate sanding the worst, and today I attacked getting the Slick Sand primer that the fiberglass shop put on for me sanded smooth. Actually, Dan did most of the sanding.........thanks Pal. He gave up his day working on his car to sand mine for me, and that really helped a lot.
Now we have to fill a few little pin holes with spot putty and then lay on a couple coats of high build primer. Once that is sanded smooth I can figure out what I am going to top coat the body in and what color it will be. Right now suede is in the lead, maybe blue, but that will probably change a few times more.
Here are some shots of the body after we sanded it today.
Don
Hi Don, just court up with you after been absent reading others build threads. Your little '27 looks cool, I will suggest you go for a bright solid colour, something that will jump out at people and say, look at me, say something like a bright pink...:);):) Hey sanding is one of those good jobs.... The only time my X wife didn't mind my smooth skinned hands all over her body:3dSMILE::3dSMILE::3dSMILE:
Wow Don ; Looking good and I'm looking forward to following your progress.
I love watching these builds like this. I really enjoyed Robinsons builds as well.
Kurt
They color is always such a final decision! think we all oscillate on this one!
I thought your were seriously considering red there for a while. ( though I'm sure whatever you choose, your car will look great!
I'm envious of how far you are so far. Just the bed of my truck has me cringing! I think I'm going to have to build a frame support to put it on for bodywork, it will be alot easier than hefting it on and off the body of the truck!
Ask Dan if he wants a free trip out to cloudy Northern California, for sanding detail!:LOL:Just kidding Dan!
Thanks guys. Yep Steve, red was on the table for a while but a couple of things are making me lean toward satin of some shade. Money is one. Since I am now unemployed for a while I can't lay out money like before to have this one professionally sprayed, so shiny is out. I also want to get this one running asap, especially since the engine and running gear are all done and ready to go.
Another reason is laziness. Building these things is becoming less fun as the years go on, and since I hate bodywork so much I don't want to expend tons of effort into making it good enough for shiny. I also like suede on some cars and maybe it would be best to let the motor be the focal point of this one.
Mainly it's just laziness though. :o:D
Don
Don,why not a red with a satin finish??There is a Willys coupe down here with a fairly bright red with satin finish,,looks kool, and different..A mile or two of pinstriping would set it off too..Are you running the same wheel/tire combo as in the earlier pix??
Hey,nothing wrong with satin finish,,less hassle come cleaning time at the local display,,just use a dry towel...
That's true, I never thought of that. Might be a good way to go.....thanks for the suggestion. :)
Don
I back Robin (Lamin8r) up on that Willys colour. it is awesome and so different from the normal flat colours one sees all the time, again you could keep some of your buddies on here happy and go matt pink with purple lines.:toocool::toocool::toocool::LOL::cool:
Yeah, Bob hasn't had anything to get his teeth into lately. He'd LOVE that color combo!:LOL::LOL:
Don
Hey Don i only just found this, looking good buddy :)
Thanks Steve. I might be able to give you and Sue a ride in it when you visit in the fall.:) I actually see the finish line in sight. :D
This weekend we got all the little pinholes filled with spot putty, and finally got to shoot a few coats of high build primer on it. Dan was a great help, gave up lots of time from working on his own car to help me sand and spray......thanks Dan.
Now that the primer is on I found a couple more little spots that need a dab of spot putty, so after the primer sets up a day or so I'll fill those then begin blocking it again. That will hopefully be the final priming before top paint. Color is still up in the air, but I have a few ideas now that I can see the body getting a little straighter. Won't really know until I go into the paint store and lay down some money though.
Here is the body after last nights primer went on.
Don
There's a rumor going round that this is your new, favorite T shirt.........:D
IT'S PURPLE, BOB!!!!!!!!:D:D Strange you should mention it. I actually saw a cool purple-ish color the other day and thought that might be a good one to use. It was more like black-purple, so maybe that one will photograph un-pink-like.
Don
Don that body is looking toooo smooth not to have a shiny coat on it and I believe that with all the other paint jobs you have accomplished, I 'm sure it will come out brilliant. Thanks also for putting those photos of Steve and Sue's cars up for us to admire, I am now made up my mind on the colour of my bucket and if there is any flake left in the world for me to purchase, I going the heavy flake way...
Thanks Whiplash and Steve. Whiplash, forget about finding any metalflake for a while, it's all been shipped to England and they're trying to catch up on production.
Steve, I really think you might be able to actually get a ride in Dans too when you two come over. He is REAL close. We thought he was ready for primer about a month ago but he found some areas that he didn't like the alignment on and has been piecutting and refitting those. I have to admit he was right, it lines up much better now. But he is running out of things to nitpick so he might be forced to prime it before it starts rusting away on him.
Here are a couple of before and after pictures. The first picture is where he pie cut right above the bottom rear edge to drop it down to line up better, and the second one is after welding and grinding it smooth.
Don
Today I decided enough was enough. Time to figure out what color the 27 is going to be, so I went to the paint store and poured through all their paint charts, even the Fleet Color chart, and finally decided I am going with SEM Hot Rod Black. It is a satin black that I have seen on other cars and liked, so I bought the two kits they have in stock to get me started and plan to shoot it tomorrow night or Saturday.
I had considered every color out there.........blues, reds, etc. and gloss versus satin, and the main reasons I went with this is that I am tired of messing around with this car. It's sitting there as a running chassis and the only things holding it back are the paint and interior. My Son Don and I share a common trait, we know when "good enough is good enough.":) Neither of us mind the little nicks or flaws that some people fret over, we want to use and abuse our rods and know that once they hit the street they will be getting road rash in a short period of time anyway.
That feels like a load lifted from my back now that I know what color it will be and I can get on with my life. Besides, I don't know if any one color or sheen is perfect on any car anyway. We usually end up liking the choice we made and living with it.
I'll post some pictures of it after the weekend. :D Here is a picture of a 27 in satin that I like a lot.
Don
I agree with you Don,choosing the colour is damn difficult more than the whole build at times and especially when keeping to a theme. I have always wanted my paint to be House of Color Tangerine and after you posted the photos of Steves' roadster,I have decided that is the colour but with the heavy flake as I have always had the early '60's theme T Bucket in mind and wasn't too sure how the flake would look as I haven't seen any cars down here with a complete flake job. I like your choice and that does really look good on the '27. Good luck with the painting.
What ever you choose it will look good Don! Just not Pink!:LOL:
I had to add that since Bob and Kurt haven't chimmed in! Seriously though the satin colors give it that old time look, sort of raw and tough! Are you thinking of red rims too?
Thanks guys. No, the rims are already powdercoated black, so that will stay. I think with enough chrome and polished aluminum it will have enough contrast. I'm thinking white grille insert and black and white interior too.
To be honest, I just hate bodywork and when I spent 8 more hours, sanding in 96 degree heat and sweating into the work early this week, I decided I don't want to take any more time to get this body good enough for shiny. That, and I am not a pro painter, so my chances of getting a shiny job really nice are slim to none.
I really see why guys like Hotrodpaint and others get so much money for a good paint job. Just in supplies alone I have a bit of money, not counting the time it takes to do it correctly. My hat is off to those guys who do it day in day out.
Don
"My Son Don and I share a common trait, we know when "good enough is good enough"."
Oh PA-LEASE ..... you guys are both on the other side of detail .... the way past side!!! So good enough is when the details are way past the norm .... which I like.
I think the hot rod black will look kick ass.
Paul
OMG, I bought the PINK version by mistake!!:D I did it just for you Bob.:)
Paul, no, you have Don and me confused with Dan. Now, there is someone who worries about small pinholes in the transmission case paint.:p I can't wait to see what happens when some stray bug has the nerve to hit his car going down the road.
Don
Don,it will look kool,,27 roadsters always look good in black...Henry would have been proud of ya..
Don how is it progressing? What's the plans for tires and wheels.
Steve, the chassis and engine are all done, just sitting there waiting for the body to be dropped on for the last time. The picture below is how it sits. The wheels are black (I had them powdercoated this time) and I'm running my old favorite, wide whites from Coker and trim rings and caps. I had red wheels the last time, so this will be a little different.
Lamin8r.........you are so right, I think 27's look great in black satin, and tonight I finally got the body sprayed and am in love with the way it looks.:D We were going to do it over the weekend, but it rained every day, so tonight Dan came over after work and we got it shot.
I am going to wet sand the entire body and shoot it one more time. I found some little scratches in the primer that I didn't see before, and a couple of stray bugs got into the paint. I'll wait a few days and sand it down and maybe shoot it again next weekend. That's the trouble with this satin paint, if you screw up you can't buff it out because it turns shiny. I expect that tomorrow the paint will have calmed down a little more, it was already settling into a nice satin finish when I left tonight.
Dan likes it so much he is considering painting his rpu with the same paint.
Don
looks pretty darn good from where i am sitting,Don..A half mile of pinstriping will finish it...
Thanks. Yep, I agree on the striping. Hope to run into a good striper at Billetproof at Don Garlits place in October. Just some tasteful lines on the headlights, dash, and trunk lid, I think.
Don
Kick ass Don.
You guys are putt'n them out!!
Paul
Thanks Paul. How about your car, done any more on it?:)
Don
Looking good Don and you can always ask the stripe person to put down some pinksh purple lines to keep your uncle happy. Good to see your little bucket in the door way too, still enjoy using it to the max. and if you are going to challege those two coupes at the drags in October, you may have to take the bcket as you know,Chev eats Fords everytime.:LOL::LOL:
