Lets see some pics of your custom wiring jobs, street/Hot Rod or muscle car. I am doing a restified 55 Chev. wgn. w stock column and heater,gauges, switches lights etc. I want a harness (AAW). BUT I want to do a neat street rod style job of it. NOT the factory correct black stretch plasitic or elec. tape wrapped snake pit that is usual on or underdash of our Tri Five cars. Yah, I know, another anal street rodder. :eek:

not mine but you`ll get the idea...you`ll need long enough wire to tuck back against firewall and or dash and route behind most everything.
This is the under drivers seat wiring in my 23.

This claptrap includes 6 electronic gauges, heater(had air, but removed it), cruise control, all lights - including cowl mount park/directionals, MSD wiring, power port, 4 speaker stereo, extra wiring for trans temp sender and w/s wipers to name a few things there.
Do a search under my IC2 name and you might find 2-3 more threads with my wiring. It did get neater as I moved along as it is all cable tied - I used over 1000 of those dam' things on then off then on again. Under wiring dash got messier then planned with additions and deletions to my AAW system. Also, search under Ken Thurm as well as he did a great job on his latest.
Oh, MAN . You last two guys scare the H_LL outa me, EGADS! I can only pray I don't have to go through that. Probably not as I am doing a very basic wiring job w few additions other than MSD 6T Ign box, Holley blue Fuel pump , Autometer column tach + under dash tri gauges and hidden CD/sterio. The rest is all factory 55 Chev including switches, dash gauges, heat and lights. Tho I am putting in HID Headlight bulbs and will probably install a cooling fan later(BBC power). I am thinking AAW's Highway 15 series kit.
Yeah, four of them are Ron Francis turn signal relays. The orange fuse holder is the main fuse that protects the whole system........it's a Maxi Fuse.Quote:

I hate that plastic split loom stuff. Looks cheap. I used this braid under hood to hide wiring colors & to clean it up. Cut w/ a hot knife, shrink wrap the ends.

But they all seem to be on real hot rods, where you can do what you want, where you want. But my job looks more like evolvos:o:o
At least at this time...but is it true that with a production re-build you have less options or am I just making it up????

I do like that newer AAW module with the screw down wire retainers rather then the press to release that my version has:D If I didn't have to remove 75% of the upholstery I might consider replacing my earlier version. I do have a couple of pieces of split convoluted loom which is hidden away for the rear lights but I ran that braided stuff wherever it was in sight in the engine compartment. I couldn't find a local source for that braided loom. I have a box of the convoluted loom that I bought in advance of doing my wiring - probably swap meet sell it this spring - cheap.

General Question - From IC2's link to his wiring thread, I understand that the AAW kit comes with a complete schematic while Ron Francis & Painless come only with written instructions? What about others?
Box to left of panel is power feed to panel. Inside is a maxi-fuse. The old panel had no fuse protection on the power feed to it.
The AAW includes a wiring schmetic & written instructions. The Ron Francis kit only has instructions.
IMO- none of these kits are perfect. I've installed dozens of RF kits but this was the 1st AAW kit I installed. Overall, I liked it. The packaging sucked though. Their method of grouping wires together in bags was totally different from mine (or RF). I found myself opening up bags & stripping out 1 or 2 wires I needed now. There- the RF kit is better IMO.
Also- the AAW kit has more oddball connectors than I've ever seen in one kit. They also need a special crimper too for some of the connectors. I trashcanned their oddball connectors & used my own pin connectors, weathertite plugs or standard plugs- like the 2 for dash I posted above.
Another difference- RF uses insulated terminals exclusively. The AAW for the most part uses non-insulated terminals & heat shrink.
Why did I use the AAW? I liked the relay for fan on the board. Cleans up the wiring.
Plus- they are quick to answer any questions.
The braid- comes in 4-5 sizes. It's made for covering wiring. I found it at a aircraft surplus store (new stock). It's braided nylon & they cut it w/ a hot wire. I cut it w/ an old putty knife in a vice I heated up w/ a torch. If you cut w/ scissors, it frays like crazy.
It's pretty reasonable as far as price. I bought 2 times more than I would need & I spent about 40 bucks.
Small terminal block you are referring to is to avoid splices or sticking 2 wires in one connector. The 2 wires on left loop down to the NSS on shifter & back. If it ever failed, I move 1 wire & I can start the car. The green wire on right w/ white stripe is relay ground for fan relay. I have a manual switch on dash which switches the relay ground, the other wire goes to the temp probe in intake. That way- if the sender doesn't work, I can manually over ride.
If you look above the maxi-fuse, there's another terminal block there. That's for headlight low & high & front running lights. The kit is designed to run to one headlight & from there to the other side of car. My headlight conduits are 3/8 stainless, there's not enough room for that many wires & splices under the hood weren't an option. So- I ran from HL switch to the terminal & then to each side of car separately.
Hi steve would you tell me where the aircraft surplus that you bought your braided wire cover is I just live over the hill from you and assume it's local and I like it I will be rewiring my 32 in a couple of months and would like use it thanks ....ted
hmmmmmm - uninsulated terminals, odd connectors and unsorted wires......not the way mine came, but then "progress" does not always make for the best product and since I got my module and wire set several years ago, they must have cost reduced:CRY::CRY:
The only insulated terminals they use are for the gauges. Everything else is bare. Actually, I prefer uninsulated w/ shrink. Better crimp & looks better.
This is for the Highway 22. Other kits may vary.
Braid is sold by the foot. You'll love this place. A hot rodders dream store. I buy all my stainless hard line & AN stuff from them. They also make up hoses or lines while you wait.

With the VDO gauges wired - there was a LOT:HMMM: more wiring after the dash was installed
The VDO gauges have special plug-in connectors which were supplied by AAW
As I am writing this I am pricing AAW kits. I am looking at the Highway 15 and 22 kits. There seems to be some variation. Lowest I found so far is $299 for the Hwy 15 and $399 for the Hwy 22. I am pretty much convinced AAW is the way to go though there are more reasonably priced makers/kits out there. The thing I do not like about the AAW kits is that they have no kit w/o their own switches, I have no need of them or any of the adapter stuff like power seat/windows, late model column or AC. Seems like waisted money for wires + parts that will get clipped or tossed in the parts bins. But maybe I can recoup some loss by reselling that stuff. The HWY 22 kit is probably overkill for my use. I like the Cassic Update kit but its WAY to much money for me and again too much is included that I will not use.
Thanks steve looked through there web sight and there is a couple of things I need right now so I am going to run up there tomorrow. been retired about 3 mo. sure is great to have time to get back my hot rods agean and be able run around any time I want no more 60 hrs. a week. thanks again ......ted
Did you give AAW a call? They were willing to supply or delete almost anything electrical when I purchased mine - and it ended up a basically a custom version - and with probably 250' surplus wire because of that. I've used for other wiring after washing the markings off.Quote:

Thats what I was thinking as I have a running add on CL to get rid of just that kind of stuff, Leftovers and extra's.
