Wagons Ho!! My new project is parked comfortably at it's new home. Now it must patiently wait until I retire and have time to bring it to life. Just 19 months away.

It's a 1954, they only made them in 54-55. Have not decided on power yet, nor what body mods I might make. What would you think of a Dodge Magnum profile with a late model Hemi, painted root beer with a little metallic? Just got my mind wandering. It will be early 2012 before I start on it seriously, gives me plenty of time to stare at it and dream to come up with ideas. :whacked: Or a traditional 60s hot rod with a supercharged Studebaker 289?**)
Definitely a late hemi,:cool:the rest?well,part of me would want to shout out its presence,the rest of me would be down right sneaky,and frighten the daylights out of people by making it a sleeper..everything tucked in and polite,but with a bad temper...:eek:
We're doing a late model 5.7 EFI hemi in the '37 Plymouth at the shop, Pat.... I'll let you know how that one turns out.... Top of the engines are fugly, plan some engine covers on the build if you use one!
What a find; that is one far out looking wagon! You're going to have a blast with that one. Sorry, but I just dont believe you can go 19 months without laying a hand on it.

Damn only made 2yrs, hell I should have kept the one the kid had before he join the service, o'well. Hell Pat I believe yours is even the same color as the kids was. Looks like you'll have one hellva grocery getting when it's done...joe
Nice acquisition Pat. Very cool wagon. Never seen one before. I like your thoughts for the hemi and the rootbeer brown flake paint. Would make a few heads turn at the shows. Looking foward to watching this build.
Thanks guys, Dave that's the best offer I have had in a while, too bad we are not closer. I like the idea that people have never seen one before... Quick research shows they made about 7,000 of them in 54.
Question for you, given it will be a while before I start on the body work, is it worth shooting some paint over the surface rust to keep it from progressing? I am in a relatively dry climate, we get rain for 4-5 months then none for the rest of the year. The car will be parked outside. If spraying some paint is a good idea, what do you recommend and should I do anything in way of prep besides getting it clean?

If it's been outside prior to this Pat, it probably wouldn't be essential....but then a can of Krylon over the bare and rusted spots would certainly prevent any further deterioration....
Might also be a good plan to dig out all the trash, dirt, etc from inside the car so that it will have a good chance to dry out, too....
Wow...what a cool ride! I didnt even know they made a station wagon, let alone a two door! That's gotta be a rare find!...
They made about 11,000 of them in '54 and the same number in '55. So they aren't completely rare, but you still don't see them very often. I'm gonna have fun with it for sure. Probably won't see one like it at the local car show...

Conestoga wagon: Is the name a coincidence?
A friend of mine had a buggy made by Studebaker and he told me that Studebaker also made the Conestoga covered wagons that settlers used to travel out west.
Can a Studebaker expert confirm?
Another coincidence: I purchased and renovated the former Harry Israel Studebaker dealership into what is now my home and shop.
I've had my eye out for just the right car to display in the shop. Good find!
It is no coincidence, Studebaker did make many wagons including many of the Conestogas that carried America west. John Studebaker was a black smith and came west during the gold rush. He ended up in Placerville CA where is smithing skills were in demand, he started out building wheel barrows for the miners. After a time, he went back to South Bend Indiana where he and his brothers started a wagon building business in 1856. They were the only wagon manufacturer that made a successful transition to automobiles. Wagons are still around and are quite collectable.
I love your home and shop, it would be every Studebaker lovers dream home!
