What is a torque converter and how do they work (for 23t)?

Basically a torque convertor is a fluid clutch. It is like a manual trans, except it has a certain rpm that it fully engages to the trans. A stall convertor is a torque convertor with a higher rpm to lock up. Street machines generally have a stall to allow the engine power band to come in before the vehicle moves to increase launch and traction.
In our neighborhood, 2 blocks down the hill was a gas station that (to me) all the cool car guys hung out there. 32 coupes, 33 & 34 Fords as well, a sweet 56 Ford Beach wagon that was setup gasser...
