Steve - take a look here: http://www.msdignition.com/forum/
You do have to type in the 2 words to do a search. I pulled a couple of threads, one of which was for a flathead - didn't seem to be a problem, but I bet you will need some sort of filter to clean up the outputDave W

Steve,
I didn't have time to read the links Dave sent, but just from my experience the msd is dependent on the battery condition not the charging system. So as long as what ever you are charging it with is capable of keeping the battery up I don't think it matters. We never had a charging system in our race cars we just charged them up after every run. My 2 cents.

Ken - the only thing I was concerned with was the fact that while the generator produces volts and amps to maintain a battery, is really a "dirty" way as compared with an alternator which does the same way, but is electronically controlled and makes cleaner electricity. The MSD might not have tolerated the "dirty" power well and needed a filter - but it looks like Steve has the OK from them to go 'as is'Dave W

Isn't there an alternator out there that looks like a generator? I thought I saw/heard of them a while back. That would be the best of both worlds. A good alternator setup with the old looks of a generator.
Found it, http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/powergen.htmlLast edited by Bug; 12-01-2010 at 11:07 AM. Reason: found link

This is true. Reckon that would be quite expensive. Just thought if the OP saw what I meant, might be able to search on the other side of the pond for something.

lots of bugs with MSD ignitions and generators.. Alternators came in '73-'74 and the generators are smaller/ fit better with aftermarket goodies like turbo's and such... my instinct says it'll all be good. You don't know what you've got til it's gone
