I was always afraid to do candy paintwork for the street, since it is so hard to repair. We decided to use the logic of the factory jobs... and use a base as dark, or darker than the candy color. After shooting 8 color samples, we thought this belonged on a '60s inspired car.
I already had to spot repair it, and it went very well... which is much better than a light base candy does!!!
BTW It's a Hemi powered '38 Dodge... just so the name makes sense. :-)

It is local. Probably will start showing up in 6 months to a year. The body was going back on the chassis today.

No problem... but you might not like the answer. I use a mixture of brands, but the candy concentrate is House Of Kolor Kandy Apple Red. The base is more of a problem. The color samples included a ceramic flake... over a black basecoat. We liked it best, but found out they stopped making it a couple years ago. It took me a few weeks, and searching nationwide, to find enough to paint it, and have enough left for future repairs.Quote:

Thanks Jay for your response. I have priced all the materials from our NZ agent of HOK paints to give me a ball park idea of costs but I will hoestly be relying on the expertise of the professional painter to get the finish I am after.Here is a couple of colours that have caught my eye.
Can you share what went into those?
Sorry Jay,I don't know anything about those cars or who painted them as I found them on a web site sometime last year and because the colour just smacked me in the eyes with it's depth etc.,I wanted to save them. Steve's Auto Restoration rebuild and painted a '40 Ford Convertible that is on there web site that is so like those two cars that also took my fancy as in certain light it looked almost black but in bright sunlight had that deep red colour.
This is the car that Steve's finished and by the sign behind I can only guess whose product he uses.

All of those cars look so amazing! :eek::D. The PPG car is a little lighter than I like, but all of them look really really nice. Further proof that I think I want to try the HOK candy basecoat system w/ black/candy. HRP- how does that differ from what you did aside from the flake? What was it that was hard to find, the ceramic flake?
I think if you just put candy over black, it will be a muddy redish brown. You will need some kind of pearl, metallic or flake in between them. The trick is to find one that goes dark when it isn't reflecting direct light. That is what makes the red highlights seem so strong. If you try different combinations, then you can compare them to see what gives the effect you like.Quote:

Sorry, I was referencing the link below for HOK's kandy basecoat system which is supposed to have a pearl mixed in. It came up on another thread here not long ago. I'll probably end up asking about it a few more dozen times before the car actually gets painted :o:LOL: Your job sounds similar except using flake instead of pearl?
