Knock on wood, 27 seems ok.

Today I installed the final parts on my 27 and fired it up for the first time since it broke down in Daytona at Thanksgiving. I hope I don't jinx myself by saying it, but everything seems much better. :D

The ticking is MUCH less, it still rattles a little til it warms up, but I am going to contribute that to the stroker kit. Once warm it quiets down to almost nothing, and best of all, my oil pressure is right at 60-65 lbs. I also do not see any drips from the rear main seal, so maybe that is cured too with the new, better seal. I prelubed the engine before I started it and got great oil flow to all the rockers. I guess putting the screw in galley plugs was a good move.

The water pump is spinning a whole lot slower with the new RunneRite pulleys and even though my temp still got up to 220 on my dash gauge, the radiator cap that I bought with the thermometer in it only reads 170. :confused: I can hold my hand on both radiator hoses so I am more inclined to believe the radiator cap. I have my sender right at the thermostat housing, so maybe it is just the hottest part of the motor right there and not a true reading.

Finally, I took it for a little drive and it pulls strong and runs well. I would like to take it to Billetproof in April in Gainesville, so I want to put lots of miles on it before then to make sure everything is ok.

Here are some pictures from today, the new valve covers Don bought me are much better as far as clearing my firewall tunnel. I can actually get them off and on, something I couldn't do with the tall Edelbrocks I had on it.

I kinda guessed that was the case, Bob. Plus, these pistons are so darned short I think they rock in the bores during the stroke.

Paul, no one is happier than me to see it back together. Not only are parts not strewn all over the shop now but I can finally start in ernest working on the frame for the rpu. I have one front rail welded up and can now get moving on the second side. :D

I put a bunch more miles on today running errands. It was cold and rainy at times, but was still a blast. :D When I came out of AutoZone I had a bunch of French guys standing around it taking pictures with their cell phones. They asked me where I got it and when I told them I built it they were surprised. I guess they figure people don't actually build cars, they have to come from some factory. :LOL:

While Dan was working on his wiring today I got my section of the shop all cleaned and organized, so tomorrow I can do some more work on the RPU frame. Now that my 27 is out of there I have enough room to work, finally. Dans section looks like there was an explosion at a wiring factory..........bits and pieces of it all over the place. So I guess he is getting close to being done.:D

Steve, you know Dan, he is doing thiis wiring the same as the rest of the car. He liked some stuff about the American Autowire kit and didn't like other things, so in the words of Tim the Toolman, "He rewired it". :D He has put Weatherpack ends on every circuit so he can remove things in the future by just unplugging them. He is also enclosing each bundle of wires in that old time cloth covering so it fits into the look of the car, He's just being typical Dan. :rolleyes::)

Roger, thanks. I do think everything is ok with the 27. I may have to replace the radiator with an aluminum one down the road. The one in it is a Brassworks that I had built over 20 years ago and it may have just gotten too old for the job.

I just realized yesterday that I have been guessing about the temp difference between the gauge and the gauge on the radiator cap, and I have one of those infared heat guns in the shop that Don bought me a while ago. Next time I get it up to temperature I am going to shoot the block and see what the temp really is. I forgot I had that one.

Dan and I didn't get in till about 4 this morning, so once he is up and moving we will get back over there and if it is warm enough out today I can put some more miles on.

there has been for some time two alloy in forged pistons the 2618 this some like better for hi out put blowers alot of NoS they can take more piston to wall . then theres 4032 alloy were you can run the piston closer to the wall as this is low growth alum were they do not move as much as the 2618 .so if the bores are big with 4032 there going to make noise .i fit the pistons for the alloy and the use. some pistons have skrits ground for better performance as to how much cam is ground in the piston not much is given about some noise till warm in some case there all out race pistons .speedpro/trw . wisco .ross .je. diamond. kb all use diffrent pro files on there skirts. cast pistons you can run very close to the wall so there not going to make any noise. hypers are a high silicon low growth as well not likeing alot of piston to wall or they can bang .so to say a storker will just make more noise is abit of a catch all .more like if forged pistons and abit loose it going to make noise. or the wrong piston to wall for use. some guys will max piston to wall size thinking there going to get beat on hard if sound was a eschew then hypers or fitting the pistons for the use would of help .i machine /build stroker i have not had anyone say any thing about piston noise then you get under say a CH of a 1.200 the piston may rock abit more have used many at 1.250 and 1.125 CH i do not know were you CH is i did not follow the build

Bob, he says it comes in various sizes and colors. The one he bought expands from something like 1/8 inch to 7/16 and is heat resistant. I think he bought it in 50 or 100 foot rolls and it was reasonable.

That's good info, Pat. I had about 3 thousandths clearance, which was what Keith Black told me they like. It really isn't objectionable now, I think most of the noise I was having before was from little or no oil going to the passenger side rockers.

if you have a 302 to 347 the ch can be 1.100 thats short for a street driver if thats what you have. you may get more sound with that short piston as to how the skirts and cam built in the piston for a driver :eek: to give you some kind of a ideal a 496to565 bbc can use a 1.270 ch there not bad on sound less i have the pistons to wall set for kill. my point it down the road blast off short runs 632 uses a 1.125 ch. the 735. ch is 1.070 so you start getting were the wrist pin is past center on the controll ring and ring pack set up gets very short .as the under side of the pistons can get in the way of the wrist pin part of the rod i like to work this all out on paper before a have pistons made
. alot of pistons use thinner rings so you can get a good ring pack so 1.100 is something 20years ago was left to the big boys

no but i turned the pin down abit on the lathe on press pins to get some weight out on the piston then i did not feel like cutting the hell out of the piston to get a weight match on a new replacement piston when the maker plays with the design of the replacement to match up a used set with one or two new pistons. i also played with pins with thinner or heaver wall pins

See, the difference is, guys like you, Pat, and Jerry, know this stuff and the right way to do it. Me, I take the kit out of the box, check the ring gap, and in it goes. :o It is a little noisy yet, but like you mention, I'm running a strong cam (X303 Ford Racing) and the short pistons, so I guess it is just going to be that way.

I got it out and put more miles on it today, everything seems fine, and I got to check the temp against the cap thermometer and the infared gun. They both read 170 and my temp gauge reads 220! :eek: I already changed gauges and senders, same reading. I have the sender right at the thermostat housing, so that might fit into what Jerry was talking about earlier.

I can also put my hand on both hoses and they are hot, but not too hot to hold, so my inclination is to believe the car is actually running at the 170-180 level.

Don can you move the temp sending unit farther back on the intake? Is it the right Ohms for the gauge( I know you already know this, but maybe they packaged them wrong?):HMMM:

Steve, I am going to move it to the other spot on the intake to see what it does there. Yeah, it is a matched set of Teleflex gauge and sender, and so far I have tried two separate gauges and two separate senders, same reading.

I'm convinced at this point that the car is not running at the temp the gauge is showing, and drove it more today in traffic and the gauge went to 220, but the one on the cap still shows 170ish. I may use that direct reading gauge I have and intall it temporarily to just get one more reading.

I am not buying his temp reading on the gauge at all. The infrared gun and the Mr. Gasket temperature gauge radiator cap agree at 170-180. Thats what I think is the true temp.

If he got the same readings with two different gauges, then the problem "must":) be either the sending unit or a bad connection.

Two different brand new gauges and two different brand new senders, same reading. I might get adventurous today and hook up the direct reading gauge I bought for my rpu project and see what it reads.

I'm not really too concerned about it, I believe the radiator cap and the infared gun, plus I can hold my hand on both hoses and they are not really hot at all. I might actually be running at 170, from all the indicators.

The other thing is that my daily driver runs at 206-212, and the dealer tells me that is normal these days. :)
