I'm adding this link so I can find it later. This is a trick Robert uses to secure wiring and I really like the idea. I'm going to give it a try. They use earth magnets and bond zip tie retainers to them and use these to secure wiring harnesses without having to drill or weld to the sheet metal.

We use either the CUP-26, which is a 49 lb pull, or CUP-20, which is 26 lb pull. Much better pricing over McMaster on magnets.
I got the oil filter adapter ordered. Hopefully it will be here by the weekend so some progress can be made. I'm having issues finding an in hose PCV so I might have to order that online. Craziness.
I was searching for where I had hid a model I got in November and I found a loose pic in a photo album I have. It's of the 40 after it was painted in the early 70s. I only know it has to be it because of the camper. That camper was my Uncle's and he pulled it with the 40. Now if I could find a full car pic of it.
Looks like another old Hemi lurking in the background by the gun safe......?
No, I wish there was. :LOL: I used the original valve covers and made wall hangers out of them. I gave the bronze one to a friend for Christmas and I kept the bare one for myself. I am thinking of painting it gold but haven't messed with it yet.Quote:

I had a pleasant surprise when I decided to separate the inner fender and rear brace from the outer fender. They never separated them when they "restored" the car. The bolts were rusted frozen. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to replace it or just run it. It didn't tear or rip. I'm thinking of re using it but haven't fully decided yet.
Once I realized my cool valve covers were a big issue and I had a huge decision to make, I side tracked to a smaller problem.
Upon my smarter decisions I decided to replace the stock valley pan with a Hot heads cast aluminum one. I already had a pcv from Hot heads but I didn't give it a thought there is no provision for a road draft tube on the aluminum plate. I started doing some research and it seems I will have to add a hole to the rear of the valley cover to attach a pcv to, as well as modify the oil fill and add a vent. Perfect. Back the valley cover came. I drilled and tapped it to accept a 1/2" NPT pipe fitting. I finally sourced an in hose PCV and I will put it in between the rear carb and the brass fitting. I was told not to put the valve on the intake because it could just suck oil out since there is no baffle now. Fair enough.
I don't have a picture of it, but I used an exhaust clamp and put the u bolt on the inside of my fender cut. I then welded it in. I wanted to add strength since I cut out the rolled edge and I also wanted to have a rounded edge look to the opening.
So no more procrastinating. I decided to leave the engine and trans mated and pull them out together. Next is to cut that fresh paint.......
Now it's time to cut this ting and make it have clearance. This time I went taller, farther back, but the biggest help I believe will be I recessed the actual notches an inch back too. Now to get the welds dressed and start body work.

Looks Good Ryan! Looks like you should have enough room. The cutouts for the exhaust also came out great
In spite of the extra work I think you made the right decision. I still sometimes wish I could have left the aluminum covers on the 57. Looks like you're going to be using bolts instead of studs for the covers, just remember to put some sealant on the threads.

Nice. I never leave enough motor clearance, I'm a slow learner.
When I was getting ready to put the engine in, I figured I wouldn't have enough room to lift the valve covers off so I used bolts. I especially didn't take into account, you have to lift the valve cover up 1.5-2" to actually get the valve cover off. Hopefully, now with the larger notches, I'll be able to lift them off the engine. I have 5/16" stainless rod to make studs for it so hopefully the notches are deep enough. :LOL:Quote:

Hell of a build. I just checked and you are less than 400 miles from me practically due north. That would make a great little road trip, might have to try it someday. I've only been in Iowa once and that was on a choo-choo from Omaha to Dayton, Ohio in 1964.

Hate you had to cut the firewall, but it's looking good. FWIW - It may have been a lot of work, but I think you made the right decision. Those aluminum covers look killer on the Hemi.
Mike, I hope everything is going well. I knew if I didn't do it now I'd be tearing the car apart later to do it and I don't want that. I sure miss having the car together. I haven't had much time to devote to it lately. I finally did get the tiger hair all knocked down. That was a lot of work but did give a great base. I put down my first later of filler last night. I'm hoping I can get it all smoothed out soon so I can get it primed. The engine needs back in the car and out of my way. I took on more side work and I got myself into another money pit. If you guys don't hear from me for a while check the local obituaries. The better half wasn't thrilled of my poor life choice but i couldn't say no. I have poor self control when it comes to cool stuff. :LOL:
On edit: I did see a 40 coupe on a FB group I'm in that had some flames I liked. I really need to get this thing fully painted.
Did I mention I hate body work? It sure makes a mess of things. **) Hopefully with any luck at all I can be primering this, this afternoon. I'd like to get it shot this weekend.
Multiple day progress, yeah, crazy I know. :LOL: First prime completed. Just more dirty work to come.
Mission accomplished! Next Monday a pin striper is coming to do some work on it and then I will stick the engine and trans back in.
Here's a little bonus. Here is a picture of my Uncle Jerry on the left, and his brother, my grandpa on the right. This picture was from the Grand opening day of their Skelly station in Colfax Iowa in 1964. It's the only picture I can find of them and the gas station.

Here is something I had pin striper/artist do for me. I sent him a picture of my Uncle's old house. He drew the pic as if it were 1994. Setting in the garage is the 40 and out front is my first car that I spent all summer working off since I bought it from Uncle Jerry. I've been trying to get ahold of the current owners to see if I could get a pic of the car in the driveway with no luck yet. Maybe someday I can make it happen.
I've been sanding and working on buffing some stuff while I wait until Monday.

After seeing R2's FB post, I figured I'd show you my beauty mark and progression to repair it. For what ever reason, when I put the 2nd coat of clear on, the clear started what looked like a reaction bubbles or something at the LH angled transition of the firewall. I ended up putting about 7 coats of clear on and it looked great when I was done. The next day I went out and checked it and all be dipped if there wasn't a big ol sag in that area. I wasn't thrilled at all about fixing it. I called some friends and they were all busy, go figure. I decided I'd watch some utube vids and I found a couple of guys that had some techniques I figured I could live with.
They used a filler scraper and one of the guys started with 320 and wrapped around the scraper. He would just run it across the run until he got it leveled out. I started at 320 but wish I would have started at 600 or 800, and worked my up to 2k. I had to sand a lot to get the scratches out but luckily I put a lot of clear on it. Then I tried to get the same friend to come buff it out for me but that was a no go as well. I ended up breaking out my dad's buffer and I finally got it looking good again. I was really nervous about burning or sanding through.
Luckily I got it fixed Sunday night because I had an appointment for my friend/striper guy to come over Monday morning at 8:30. I've been wanting to make the under hood of this look like it was built in the late 60s/early 70s. Here is what we came up with.
From right to left. The Skelly was more associated with the gas station my Uncle and Grandfather had when Jerry got this car. The Direct connection one is because that parts program was started in 69 or 70 and would be where you would get over the counter Mopar parts then. Lavertty performance was the performance shop my Dad used, and I ended up using 95% of the time too. I figured it would fit right in. I wanted to do Hot heads but they didn't come about until 1983 or 84. It just felt right to mark the car with it's name. I already did on the chassis but no one will ever see it. The next one I think turned out so cool. I had Frosty modify the PAW logo from a blown BBC to a blown Hemi. Next the Moon eyes. Could you even have a hot rod back then without a moon product? :LOL:
Last but mot least, he highlighted the Ford logo with the same blue he did the air cleaner lid with. I've had some people on FB say they didn't like it, but oh well. I think it's pretty cool and I like it better than putting the stickers on the windows seeing how it's really not a race car.

Thanks guys! I think it turned out pretty sweet. A page or so ago I was thinking of ways to make my 5" Auto Meter gauges work in my dash without modifying the stock dash. Luckily, the 5" gauges are closer to 3 1/4" under the lens. I got to thinking maybe I could make a dash insert for 2 3 3/8" gauges work. I was trying to find a finned aluminum one but didn't have much luck and then I found what I thought would be the next best look for a 70s themed hot rod. An engine turned panel! I do believe I'll be incorporating more of this in the interior. I've always liked the looks of engine turned pieces.
I knew there would be some work to make the gauges fit. I began grinding the bezel to get the gauges to fit. Unfortunately, the only they would fit is if I notched the edges of the gauges. That was a little nerve racking taking the death wheel to a pair of $500 gauges. I did open up them a little but I plan to seal them back up and they should be good. I'll re paint the bezels and the mods should be harder to spot.
Next was to get the insert to actually fit the dash. I wonder if they sent me a truck one? Oh well, too late as I already started chop cut, rebuilding on it. I've got it fitting pretty decent now. Next is to find a way to hold the insert to the dash and cut down the gauge hold downs so I can secure the gauges to the insert. It's coming together.
The pinstriping is great, anyone who doesn't like it probably wasn't around in the 60's or weren't paying attention! Gauge panel is great, amazing how these "bolt ons" always require hours of modifying to fit, huh?
Oh yea! I remember PAW well. Moon as well. Engine turning is about as classic and timeless as it gets. Good for just about any year of build. If it was good enough for Bugatti, it's plenty good enough for for me!
Looks great and I agree with everything said. But if you were after a 60's look you would have a full compliment of S-W gauges with a Sun tach same as I had in my 36 5 window coupe in 64. No radio mas well.
You got that right! I totally agree about the bolt ons. I probably spent 2hrs cutting and trimming this dash insert so far to get it to fit in the dash hole.Quote:
