Mike, the stock spark plug tubes were too short for these. The moon ones are the correct length. I've been looking for a center sump pan for you. One guy hasn't returned my calls, and the other guy had none. Have you tried asking Matthyj on here? He's in Missouri and has a lot of 354/392 parts.Quote:

I messaged him on FB last night. He doesn't think he has one but is checking. My local gun shop owner has several 392's he won't sell but he's checking for a center sump pan as well. I also called another guy in SE Iowa I know that has a 392 and a collection of awesome hot rod parts. He said he used to have 1 for sure but he gave it to a guy putting an early hemi in a vintage pulling tractor. I've got to call him back tonight to see if he could locate one.Quote:

I was not very thrilled and thought about removing the front section and just having a floor console. The more I thought about it, and the more pics I look at of street rod interiors, I decided to leave it. I've always had a vision of a full console so I'm going to try and make it work.
I decided to add wood to the sides and use aluminum for the center. I had a damaged door I removed from a piece of equipment I saved and there was enough material to make the center from. I plan to engine turn the panel once I get all the holes cut in it.
My plan is to use 2 67-72 chevy truck corner AC vents and cut them, and place them at the top of the aluminum below the dash to let air through. I also plan to put a wood diverter to guide the air up to them. I will extend the cowl vent actuating arm through the center panel as well so it can be actuated.
I have a plan to make some boots/wipers for the cowl vent and shifter. I have some rubber stripping I think I'll cut a slit in and either glue or screw it to the aluminum to seal up the holes. I still haven't decided how I'll attach the center panel to the wood. I'd like to do allen head bolts. I thought about gluing in some heli coils or even nut serts. Or find allen head type screws. I added the wood to the uppers trying to make this look cleaner and I guess I had the idea in my head from centurion conversion trucks or old conversion vans? :whacked:
The plan is to add one or two cup holders behind the shifter, and have water temp, oil pressure, and voltage gauges above the shifter. The fuse panel will be on the LH side down by my ankle. I should have room for a storage cubby on the RH side as well. I need to source an arm rest for the top of the rear section. That is where I'm at currently. I have some abs plastic I'll put over the wood if need be and I would like to add carpet or material to the sides. Maybe paint the top? I haven't decided yet.
Once I get the console in place, I can start wiring and that is what I need to do to get this closer to starting.
The last pic was a side squirrel project. The boys were playing with a friend Monday and it was rainy. Clint and his friend wanted card board to make guns out of so they could play military games on their bikes. I didn't have any spare card board so they went to the grocery store to get some free boxes. Colt didn't want to go so I told him I'd help him draw out a gun on my spare plywood and he would have a much more cool gun than their lame card board guns. Colt was sanding his when the boys came back. Their jaws dropped and they both were saying, that's not fair. Whaa, whaa, whaa. :LOL: Then I ended up making 2 more. **) Clint's trigger guard and trigger broke off but he painted his black. My friend says he gives it a week before the cops are called. :D
Working on the car and working with the boys......doesn't get any better!
Love the color on the dash and trim.
I definitely would paint the the top to match the dash color.
I wonder if you could make the top out of 1/8" masonite. It's relatively flexible and you could always steam the back side to help it bend. It's easy to work with and my experience is when you scuff it up it holds paint well. Just thinking out loud.

I'm sure I've seen power conversations for cowl vents offered somewhere. I made one for my 46 many years ago out of a power headlight motor. Works ok but is slow.

I did some looking around and the consensus is the Rocky powered cowl vent is the way to go. For now, I'm just going to reach through the glove box and open it if I want it open. I don't have a glove box liner and don't feel like buying one to cut up later or discard when I finally get AC for the car.

Of course, I totally forgot to buy any cup holders online and I didn't want to wait. I found this 18oz cooking cup in the camping section at walmart. I ground off the spot welds of the wire hangers and now it's a cup holder. :cool: I used my hobofraud hole saw closest to it's size and cut a hole in my center panel. I also notched the rear side upper board so when the seat is moved forward, the seat won't get torn from the wood sticking out.
Next was to address the blocked off air issue and cowl vent. I spent a lot of time making an extended handle for the cowl vent but I just hated it when it was shut. It reminded me of a rat rod and I just decided for now I'll reach through the glove box to open the vent it I want to have it open. So that was not an issue now.
Now I had to find these billet ac vents a friend of mine gave me last fall. Yeah, who knows where those went. **) I think I gave them to a friend with a 69C10 he's building. once again, I didn't want to order anything as I'm trying to keep moving forward, I brain stormed.
I knew I had some nice original black AC dash corner vents I removed from a 71 C20 cab. I decided to cut the housing and make them flush mounts. They look vintage, because they are, and they are free. Win win. ;) I'll decide where to have them placed later and drill the screw holes to mount them.
I still have at least 3 gauges to mount. I sure don't have as much room as I thought I did. My only places to put them are probably on either side of the shifter. That real estate sure didn't last. Haha
This afternoon I'll make a bracket to mount my fuse panel to my console side piece. I already cut an aluminum piece to use as a door. I need to come up with a hinge and a latch. Earth magnets might come into play here I think. Once I get the fuse panel mounted I think I will remove the center console, fix my dash scratch, fix my steering column mounting holes I hosed myself on, add kill mat to the firewall, and paint and seal the trans cover. I also have to install a throttle pressure cable for the trans I forgot about. Once this stuff is done, I shouldn't have to pull the cover off for a good while.
Then I can reassemble and start laying and routing wiring to get ready to give this thing life again.
Yesterday after work I got right to making a bracket to hold the fuse panel. Luckily I had a metal bracket from a piece of equipment we did a modification on. I was able to re-purpose it by adding some bends, cutting a section off, drilling some holes and welding nuts to the back side of it. I also lucked out on the mounting screws. I haven't seen where this speedway harness came with mounting screws and I didn't have any 1/4" bolts long enough. Luckily I saved these stainless studs from a job. They were meant to hold a hydraulic solenoid block on to a manifold. The problem was the original manifold was metric. Instead of trash canning them, I stuck them in my bolt bin. The top is a threaded sleeve with an allen in the center. These worked perfectly for this and the top of the fastener is flush with the top of the fuse panel.
Then I cut the console side so the fuse panel would set inside just behind the side panel of it, and be close to flush. I made a panel to cover it but haven't decided if I will put a hinge on it or use velcro, or magnets to keep it on. The panel is aluminum so adding a hinge to it might be difficult since welding is out, and I don't want a bolt sticking out on either side. I considered bonding it but haven't decided yet. I need to verify the cover will open up and not hit the steering column as it swings out. Hinging may not be an option.
I should have been painting as it was only 82* and the next week is supposed to be 100* or more.
Nice work. I was wondering how the fuse box was going to land. I’ve got a rewire job to look at Saturday so I am looking for ideas that don’t make me twist upside down to see a fuse or wire connection

Thanks Mike. Originally, the vision I had in my head had the fuse panel in front of the shifter under a panel so it was easily visible. Well reality set in after I started putting the console together and I realized there was no more real estate. :LOL: I saw on the HAMB on a 32 Ford roadster with a 40 Ford dash, the guy put his fuse box on a hinge mount and had a simple spring latch to retain it. The fuse panel would swing down when you pushed back on the tab and made the fuses easily visible and accessible. Maybe that's an option for your project. The biggest draw back I for see with my setup might be the hassle of the wiring being above the trans tunnel making it more difficult to remove the trans tunnel. We shall see.Quote:

Just pop the wires out of the flasher socket on the main board, hook them up to the flasher and zip tie it somewhere behind the fuse block. They almost never fail, especially on a limited use vehicle. A skinny flat tool will release the connectors from the fuse block.
Between work and Allyson working the fair, I didn't get a lot of progress done on the 40. I spent 2 afternoons cleaning getting ready to try and spray some parts. Too bad it's going to be stupid hot the next 3 days. We'll see what I can get done. I need to stuff the window air in and forget looking at the bill......
If anyone is interested, the lady she works for won the Best Food at the Iowa State Fair for the 2nd year in a row. They were busy everyday and packed from open to after close. This lady has 2 other food stands at the fair as well. Talk about a booming biz. Allyson can be seen at the 41 second mark. She's on the left and again at the very end.

Yes it is. I've been trying to spend my money more wisely. I'd rather have stainless hood hinges since they don't make them anymore than the billet arm rests. I happened to find a guy in North Dakota that has some new in a box along with new head light trim rings, and head light buckets. I bought them all and that was an expense I wasn't ready for. :LOL:Quote:

We wet sanded these starting with 1k, up to 1500, then to 2k, then 3k, and Steve buffed them. He wants me to bring the car back in May to re spray the rest but IDK. He has been giving me a lot of crap about my poor boy ways for a while on this paint since he uses pro grade everything. :HMMM: After he buffed this stuff he was mind blown. He kept saying no way this stuff should look this good. :cool: He started calling it the Chris Kraft paint job because of the flake! :CRY:
I also have been working on wiring and I bought more electrical supplies to try and wrap that up. Sunday 4/28 is the Iowa Street Rod Association Spring Fling car show and I'd like to get the car there for it. Worst case I'll trailer it there and roll it off in the grass. Hopefully that won't be needed.

I'd say you need to replace that "I'd like to" above with "I'm going to" and tie it to a realistic event that's more than two weeks away, like "Come h3ll or high water, I'm driving this thing at the July 4th GoodGuys in Des Moines this year!!" I'm not bustin' your chops, but I think it was February a year ago that you emailed me that you were bringing it to the World of Wheels in Kansas City in March, and here it is April a year later. I'm wantin' to see/hear that Hemi ROAR and see the PermaGrin on Clint's face!!:D:D:DQuote:

Wiring can be a pain. My problem is I get in a groove and have a plan and then get sidelined to another project and when I come back I forget what the heck my plan was.
