Here are some nice ones with that teardrop hood. :-)~
Or...........you could cheat like one ol' fart I know who went with the late '60s semi-flat paint like the Mustangs used.......................;)
My kind of thinking, Bob, I can really relate to quick, easiest, cheap, cheating and O.F.s Now if I can just remember to do that when the time comes.
I love the Thunderbolts but I have a question. Was there a factory '62 Thunderbolt, or are the above just capturing the Thunderbolt themes?
The flat black hood used to be just about essential on drag cars for me! Our local track runs straight west, in late afternoon rounds a shiny hood would make "seeing" the lights almost impossible!!!!
According to wikipedia, the Thunderbolt was only '64. Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Altho some have said not to go with the stock carb, I decided to try a brand new one at $165 and if it doesn't work out then the swallow won't be as difficult. Also the timings not the greatest with my eye crap but maybe I can get, Bo, to come help install it anyhow.

Got some figuring to do with the accelerator rod and I need to pick up a heat tube and figure out where to stick it. The place in the exhaust mani is a no-way-jose becaue it's a rusted POS so maybe there would be a place on the intake???
Appears to be some small vacuum tubes that I don't have places for but I'll figure it out some how.
Anyhow, if it will crank and idle then I'll be happier than Charlie with an ice cream cone.
Is it even legal to be that happy?!?!?!:LOL::rolleyes::LOL::LOL:
If you can find center on the old connector, you just may be able to drill right through it and sleeve your new tube right through. I've done that on my 390 Mustang, and someone made a kit that mounted onto the exhaust pipe that would give you a new place to mount the tube connection.. Check with the Mustang vendors like Mustangs Unlimited, they'll have something to help.
thanks Mike, I'll give those places a look see - - - can't get to the old one to drill it out however.
an aftermarket kit sure sounds like the cat's meow don't it?
You could also convert to one of these..
Motorcraft Electric Choke Thermostat
Just add a wire..
Now you've gone and done it, Mike. I think that will really "simplify" my prob, especially if the one I have will adapt.
'preciate it el mucho,
Em
One more question, if I may. The one I have is like the housing on the left is it the one that will work? Am I understanding this correctly?
I would say the Echoke would make life a lot easier...Just put one on the wifes 57 and it works great...You just have to find a lead thats hot only with ignition on..Good luck
Hay Mello you been up playing with your new hot rod yet???
Sadly, Charlie, I can't do anything except look at it right now, or my Wife would field dress me with a butter knife. However, I'm starting to think about the next steps. Of course the new carb goes on first with some creative linkage and no pull ties. hahaha and then I have to address the oil pan plug and probably the radiator. Then comes the mufflers, the lowness and on and on but it's the best therapy that I know of if I ever get to do it. Thanks for asking
well hopefully the oil pan plug can be fixed with an oversized plug OR just a new one with a gasket..Was the last guys nam Rub Golburg :LOL::LOL: I understand the wife thing BUT if you screw up your eye she will not be fun to be around. (Been there done that)
It was either Rube or Red Green, I'm sure.
Be damn glad you can "Look at it that is"
OK Y'all, I just had to get outa that recliner and away from those reruns this morning (I WON'T watch any News except the local new) so I decided to work my brain (no danger there) and very little muscles. Been squirting rust stuff on those frozen intake bolts and this morning they eased right out with no strain at all. Woo Hoo
Now, I'm going to get that electric choke kit that Mike turned me onto and I'll need a power source with the ignition on. I'm thinking that the solenoid on the fender wall right next to it might be a good place?????????????? Any ideas about a good ignition on power source for that choke????
Meller, got a test light? Maybe one of those that probes the wire when you pull the trigger?? Find a wire under the dash that goes hot when the key is turned to on and off when the key is off. Maybe the radio? or perhaps an accessory?
I don't do under the dash well at all with the old bod but I did use my tester and found one of the small posts on the solenoid to be hot with the ignition turned on - - - - shouldn't that work?
Yes, but if there is a source at a solenoid, did someone add a second solenoid?
The factory solenoid would have battery voltage on one side fulltime and the other side would go to the starter, so without seeing the car I'm assuming someone added the solenoid so you should be good to go...
It's the terminal marked with the red arrow on this pic and if you will look at my original post #1 on this thread you will see how it is on my Ride.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps34393976.jpg
If there is only one solenoid like factory original, the battery is on the left, the next terminal closes the relay (solenoid) the terminal you have marked supplies 12 volt to the distributor while cranking only, the terminal to the furthest right goes to the starter motor when the relay (solenoid) is closed. The terminal you have marked in red should not be hot all the time! it should only be hot when cranking!
But, is there only one solenoid like from the factory? Or have I "mentally" added one to many??
There were some solenoids, for garden tractors and Harley's that would have a terminal stay hot so maybe that's what someone installed in yours. ?.?.?
Use that terminal, it's there and the choke doesn't require a lot of amps, it won't hurt anything.
I tested it and when the key is off it has no power and when the key is on it's hot but I wondering will it still have power once it cranks? Of course that's after I get a carb on it.
You've got me curious now too!:LOL:
That's the way the old starting and charging system was wired, the "I" terminal will be hot when the key is on, power goes from this terminal to the voltage regulator..
Thanks, Dave, I thought that might be the case because there's a wire on it now so it must be the Voltage Regulator power ?????????
About time to set the new carb - - - - there wasn't anything on the gaskets that were on there but I'm wondering if I should put some compound of some kind on all of the gasket surfaces??? or should I just go back dry????
My motto in life is "always use Permatex on every gasket no matter what"
thanks, Nick, lotsa Permatex tube on the rack - - - any special one?
