If it idles at 1400 with the choke on its probably because of the hi idle cam on the carb butterfly shaft------------
and the throttle shaft probably has too much wear so is leaking vacume BUTTTTTTTTTTTT that may not be a problem----does the throttle plates close with the choke in the off position?????????????/
I believe the carb was new or rebuilt recently... If so , the throttle shafts should be in good shape. But Em can verify this info.
I did that surfacing twice on both sides but I probably need to do it again - - - that spacer is the one that is hollowed out and Dave told me the solid ones are better but I'm gonna try and get this one to work - - - need to pick up some decent emery cloth along with the gaskets, eh?Quote:

you don't want to use gasket sealer on the carb or the plate. If you can't get it to stop try 2 gaskets or a new plate. try tightening the 4 bolts a little at a time going around the carb.
OK, no sealant - - - I got one more thing I'm gonna try per Dave W.'s suggestion and if that doesn't do it then I'm gonna get NAPA's machine shop to mill both sides of that spacer while I'm getting new gaskets and then we'll see what happens.

sorry, Jerry, it was probably my verbal stumbling but when you said "too much wear" I assumed that you didn't know it was a new carb
I added the electric choke kit myself and it ?seems? to be working fine - - - I will check the throttle plates in the morning to see if they are closed completely - - - however, I DO have a vacuum leak at the gasket at the base of the carb so I would think that I need to address that before "we continue" with anything else - - - thanks again

Em, when you put it back together tighten your carb bolts in a couple of stages using a cross (X) pattern. Snug them, then go around again to around 50 to 60 inch pounds, then do a final to the recommended torque. I've seen values of 100 to 110 inch pounds on some carbs, and others for 140 to 150 inch pounds. You definitely don't want to "honk down" on them or you can warp the carb base. If you don't have an inch pound torque wrench, 100 inch pounds is only an 8.3 pound pull on a 12" ratchet handle (100/12 = 8.33), and it's easy to over torque.Quote:

I'd say use extreme caution if you get one of those gals above to help you torque your bolts. I'm sure either of them could pull more than 8.3 pounds on your ratchet handle......:eek::eek::LOL::LOL::LOL:
Em, measure that wrench in inches, divide it into the inch pound value you're using for torque, and that tells you how much force in pounds you need to pull on the wrench, holding it towards the end. If you want to get fancy you can hook your fish scale to the end of the wrench for accuracy. The torque value is not that critical here, but using your "calibrated pull" to get them all close to the same "pull" is.Quote:

Don't worry too much with the torque, Em. Just give each nut the same "pull", and don't make it overly healthy. 120 inch pounds is just ten foot pounds, and that's not a very hard pull. I only mentioned the torque because you're chasing a leak, and we want it tightened evenly.Quote:

Got it running and idling at 800 rpms this morning with the first crank - - - - doubled the thin gaskets between the intake and spacer and then put the thicker 7/32" heat gasket between the spacer and the carb - - - - this video is very very short but I don't know how to use this camera that my Step-son gave us but you'll get the idea I'm sure. thanks to everyone and have a great weekend, Em
