Grandson is a hard worker, if you can keep him away from the ladies that is.
If it were mine I'd drop the driveshaft and have one person on each wheel so that when you release the pressure on one side it doesn't try to switch sides. Personally the safest way, IMHO, is to drop the drivesahft and brake line and drop it down by undoing the shackles.
Well, if you read my description, you'll see where I say to let the suspension relax, the axle is above the spring(s), so when you remove the U-bolts gravity is still pushing the axle into the spring.
I also have done this many times, never had one swing around so I can't figure why your's did.
So, get the axle block installed yet?
Nope, the feller that's gonna dual it out for me said he would remove the lowering blocks before he did the exhausts.
If my eye and back weren't in such bad shape they would already be out but they are so I'm content with him doing it.
However, the fan shroud and 6 blade fan is on it's way to La Casa so I'll be draining "no-freez'em up stuff" and getting the rad ready to pull tomorrow and hopefully all of it installed by first of the week. Then I'll call da' Muffla Man
Yes you would want the blocks out before the mufflers go in. Not sure what NTFDAY is referring to. But you got a grip on the procedure
Speedway says delivery on Friday so I started on radiator removal this evening. Drained coolant from rad and block and it wasn't rusty or full of junk at all. Was a pretty good strain on the back getting the tranny cooler lines off and plugged and I didn't lose but just a little tranny fluid. Getting up and down several times made me decide to finish it in the morning or Friday morning. Looks like I should probably remove the chrome grill also in order to do it right. Looks like there's only 4 bolts holding it in - - 2 on each end at top and 2 on bottom about 1/4 way in from the sides. This will also allow me to drop the hose on the tranny cooler and replace with new hose and put a bolt in that was left out that holds the radiator to the housing. I may have to get a slightly larger spacer or shim the shroud a little towards the fan to get it properly located so it works properly. Sure looking forward to the fabricating and construction and hope I get rewarded with a cooler running engine.
That's always a good feeling!
I can only "pat myself on the back" in the mornings because I'm so stiff by bedtime I can't hardly scratch my belly.
A younger talented knuckle dragging wrench spinner would call this 15 minutes worth of work.
HOWEVER, this crippled Old Phart calls it "PROGRESS"
All the bolts came out fine and none twisted off - - - - only one was missing and I've already found a replacement. While I'm waiting on delivery, I need to figure out a real good way to handle those wires that lie between the top of the radiator and the top bar of the radiator housing (see last pic). Right now they were just poked in there and the radiator held them in. Any suggestions?

maybe put a piece of conduit in there to put the wires through. ( 1" or 1 1/4"??) painted same as car
only problem there is that I would have to cut and resplice most of the wires - - - what do you think about this idea? Getting some real thin aluminum flat stock, painting it to match the cream white and then sheet metal screwing it to the two lips and therefore the wires will be semi-enclosed behind that piece of aluminum. All I need is a piece 2.5" tall and 24" wide and it wouldn't be interfering with anything once screwed down?????
or just get another piece of that black plastic conduit, slip those wires into it, use electric tape to secure it to the wires and call it a day.....it's inexpensive, offers protection, keeps things neat and will never be seen when the radiator is back in place....;)

Randy and Ken, this is almost spooky or maybe GMTA afterall - - - - - either that or you both also have some Redneck/Red Green running in your veins. This is 3/4 plastic split loom with lots of Barrio Brothers pull ties (to be respectful) and I kept them in the nook with some bolts loosely threaded in some existing holes with an oversized lock washer and a pull tie ran thru the washer and then pulled down around the loom.

Does make things kind of tidy doesn't it?
Nice job on cleaning up and protecting those wires!
That's pretty much what I was going to suggest.
Now that it's done, I see I'm to late to tell you where to put'em!! HAH!!! ROFL....
Aw go ahead and tell him anyway. Nice job simple and sweet
Since I'll be installing the shroud and radiator soon, I have a question about the auxillary tranny cooler - - - - - ?why? does the cooler have to be mounted right against the radiator core? Isn't that asking the engine cooling system to work harder to cool the engine along with restricting proper air flow thru the radiator? AND, if you don't pull a lot of steep grades or a trailer, then how much cooling does the average tranny need? Can I mount my tranny cooler somewhere else so it gets air flow only when moving or does it have to have a constant fan pulling air thru it?

TIA and have a great weekend,

Too bad your radiator doesn't have the trans cooler built into it. That should be more than adequate for that little car. Finding another place to mount this thing would be pretty challenging and probably wouldn't gain much, especially since you're putting a shroud on it.....perhaps a radiator expert will have another opinion....
Looked like you have enough room to mount it behind radiator-------
When all the items are added up--there is only so much cooling to be done, whether its a separate cooler or combined in the bottom tank of the radiator like oem---
Mounted the one for my 38 under car behind the trans. They sell ones that mount on the frame 12' long 24" long.
Thanks Charlie, I'm wondering if I can mount this one in the space between the grill and the panel that hold the radiator? Will it get enuff air from moving down the highway to do the job mounted like that?
Look at post #332 (the pic from the front) and there's an area to the left of the rad hole with three vertical slots - - - - I was thinking about mounting it there??????????????????????
I would move it to a place where it is protected and receives sufficient air flow. If you decide to put ac in the car the ac condenser will need to go in front of the radiator.
might get the battery a little warm?
In post #208 it appears that the radiator has a tranny cooler in the bottom tank---flush it while you have the rad out and reconnect it and toss the aux one in the trash
Jerry, I sure do like that option best - - - when I put a new radiator on my '55/350 I used the radiator to cool the tranny so I'm gonna try that - - - any suggestions as to the best way to flush it? Can I use the water hose? While we're on that subject, how do I tell which tranny line goes to what connection in the radiator tank or does it matter?
I wouldn't sweat it. Once you optimize the airflow through the radiator, the small amount of heat coming from that little cooler won't amount to much.
But if you're looking to change it, then I'll agree with Jerry.. (did I just say that??? ) set it up behind the radiator and you'll be the finest kind!
OH, now I see we have a trans cooler!! Open the fittings and blow a little (keyword LITTLE!) compressed air and see what comes out. If needed flush with some new clean trans fluid!!
If you're having radiator shop check / clean the core, ask them to pressure test the cooler!!!
Gotcha, I sure hope I can use the one at the bottom of the radiator and get the other out of the way so maximum air can go thru the core for the engine. It looks real clean in the two tranny line holes and the fins inside are real shiny but that might not mean anything. Been modifying the shroud so it fits around everything so I should be mounting the fan and cutting the BIG HOLE in the shroud tomorrow sometime baring the dang heat. Thanks gentlemen and Mike too. LOL
Got an early start at 5:30am (cooler then - well let's say it wasn't 95 degrees yet) I had cut the shroud to fit the radiator yesterday evening and that took some time and patience.

First thing was to get the center hole for the fan cut to the proper size and location.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1374334047
Hole is cut and shroud and fan are temporarily installed so I can measure the distance for the spacer size. Turned out to be 2" and I had figured more. (pleasant surprise too)
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1374334046
Got the shroud and fan installed and everything connected back up except for the lower radiator hose and the tranny lines. (tranny cooler in the radiator flushed out real nice so I'm hoping the auxillary cooler won't be needed)
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1374334046
The fan sits inside the shroud about an 1" overall but I had to cut the bottom of the shroud back pretty far because the fan was hitting it but approx 75% of the shroud is correct in relationship with the fan. Don't think I'll climb under there anymore today - - - maybe in the morning I can finish the lower connections and fill it with coolant for a (fingers crossed and small prayer) leak and cooling test.
Have a great weekend, Y'all

Em, use a line wrench to hook up the tranny lines to the radiator
Great progress. You'll be on the road in no time
That's cool! ....get it? rofl.. sometimes I just crack myself up!
Looks like your on your way now! Fingers crossed all your hard work pays off in spades! :D
With that Shroud of Meller you'll be the coolest guy in town.
Mike, stay off the crack.
Mike should be on the Stage - - - as a matter of fact there's one leaving at 3pm - - - be on it !
