Keyless entry...

Hey guys - What is your take on the keyless entry / shaved door handles?
If you have them, have you had alot of problems with them?
I'm interested in the pros & cons, so I can decide what to do with the Stude...

Shave the door handles, if they fail, theres a manual backup system that comes with the kits or you buy it extra.

I've had shaved handles on my 64 for bout 25yrs with no prob
I also put them on the Rambler and added cables inside just in case I have a prob cuz I also put electric windows..... so with no power I'd be up the creek with no paddle...... if the kit you buy doesn't have the cables the kit runs about 50 bucks...... I just went to the local bike shop and bought the hand brake housing then picked up some 1/8 cable from the hardware store (cuz bike cables come cut to length and they weren't long enough) some wire loom clamps and some cable clamps and made my own I did both doors for about 22 bucks compared to 100 for the kits

Well, I don't plan on drag racin' the Stude...so I guess I'm OK there...

I know that some kits do come with the pull cord, for back up, just in case.
The reason I was asking about the keyless entry/shaved door handles is because we were watching a guy that was fighting with his door, trying to get it open, and then he finally had to get down on the ground and pull the back up cable to get in.
I didn't know if this was a common problem, or just a freak thing...

I assume that having your doors & body right on the right on would be necessary, so that nothing is getting bound up or stuck, right?

You can buy kits based on solenoid size. These are rated for different weight doors. A 35lb solenoid will handle just about anything, but you can probably get away with smaller. Istalling them correctly will avoid binding. They also sell door poppers which help as well.

Richard, while you make a valid point, the same would hold true if the doors were locked. And many cars today have locks that activate as soon as the vehicle is in gear. If it was an emergency, to get the person out you break the window!

In a full competition car I can see the reasoning, but hopefully for the casual racer it would not be a problem.

Angel, you are right, the doors need to hang right and pop open easily. In some cases folks actually have door "poppers" that push the door open slightly, you can also spring load the hinge. When you activate mine, the door opens just enough to grab hold. When I have mine in the garage, I always leave a wing window open(remeber those? I know you got 'em too), just in case.

In the days before wireless remotes, guys used to hide a button up inside a fenderwell

Thanks for the suggestions guys...I'll have to some homework on these things before I jump in & do it! :p

Do any of you have any other suggestions for door handles that would look nice? We're thinking that we would like to have a "smoothie" look, with no door handles at all, but I am open to other suggestions too!

And thanks for your input Streets...but I don't think that my truck would look right as a doorless convertible... :rolleyes: :LOL: :rolleyes: :LOL:

I like the popping kind where it pops open a bit. Also try getting some newer handles if you don't go with the keyless entry, go get some off of a newer Chevy truck where the handle is smooth with the door instead of popped out and paint them the same as the car or truck. That always looks nice.
