I just hope I don't twist up my rear axle like a pipe cleaner when I pop the clutch at 11K RPM

The only thing that could happen is the chain could snap, your rear axle shoulden't twist cause it's chain driven, it might rip it out of the mounts though, or maby spin the axle berrings. I was thinking of using my Ds100 engine from my Dirtbike in my gokart but decided the Dirtbike would be better.Quote:

I installed the dash + engine on/off, key-swtich, and engine start button installed along with an oil presure light, and digital gear position indicator (1-2-3-4-5):

There is a 7-segment display on the dash which tells you what gear you're currently in (1-2-3-4-5) and when I'm in Neutral, a bright green Neutral lights up on the dash. (Can you see I'm in 1st gear?) A red Oil pressure light, and my Tach+spedo back-lighting for night driving :)
I'm assuming the bike you used had 34K on it? What year was it? Being you have all the wiring for a taillight and turnsignals and a headlight, why don't you buy a set of 12" or 13" lawnmower or other wheel that would work and mount DOT legal tires on them and get it regestered with a hombuilt registration, you would need at least a lap seatbelt if you did. A Carlisal Turf saver lawn mower tire might be Dot legal. The dash is cool with the shift indicator but your Speedometer is not accurate, that will need to be recalibrated or the speedo drive gear in the trans like on a car ( older ) is and you just change the speedo drive gear and it ajust's the speedometer, right now it's going to read way faster than actual unless, you get a larger rear sprocket to match the original rear tire speed ( when on the bike ), and match the final drive ratio of the original bike. That may be the only way to go because they may not make speedo drive gears for your application, you could also just have someone drive a car w/ accurate speedo next to you, and then get the cart going so the speedo reads like 55 and then stop and ask them what the reading on there speedo was and use that number to go by and you will be able to add or subtract depending on the Mph the car went and the reading of your speedometer.
It was a 1979 GS750. The bike was working great before I disassembled it.
I re-wired everything using my own custom wiring harness. I didn't wire up any lights except the Enging Oil pressure, Gear indicators, and backlights for the dash. The Spedo is not connected right now. I would run the spedo cable off the rear axle and calibrate the gear ratio so I'd have a correct MPH reading. Normally, this is run off the GS750's front wheel. I'm not going to bother with the Spedo, but I will install the TACH cable. I'm just looking for a longer one. The original TACH cable on the GS750 is only 30 inches or so and I need about 90 inches.
I would design/build something completely different for driving on the roads -- this is intended strictly for racing.

How fast ya think it'll go? I'd say about 120 if you could handle it. When you get it done, take it to a local drag strip just to find out. Get a cable off a larger bike, if not that, splice 2 togther with some kind of conector/mount mounted halfway and attached to the frame, of course, only if you cannot find a longer 1.Quote:

I personally won't be going anywhere near the top speed. I know the top speed they give the GS750 bike is 130 MPH, but that must just be because it redlines in 5th gear. I had a custom 28 tooth #630 chain sproket made so I'm probably geared a little lower (original rear spocket was 41 tooth), so your 120 might be right on! I'd say 100 mph is probably the top speed because of all of the extra rubber I have on the ground (drag) -- but who knows. Maybe I can find a dyno that will let me wind it up on.
I don't plan on going very fast because I don't trust my welding job yet. I don't have any welding inspection equipment, or the experience to insure all my frame welds have proper penetration, etc. I've done a lot of welding, but this is the first welding job that prevents me from road rash -- hopefully I did a good enough job.

I once built a cart very similiar to yours. The one I built didn't have nearly the HP yours has. Mine had an Yahama enduro 175 two stroke motor on it. I was young and didn't have the money for a smaller axle sprocket, it only had a top speed of 50 mph, but got there very quickly.
I always wanted to put a 4 banger on it as you did. Psychocart is a good name for what you have built there. Maybe Widow maker would be a better name.
You might want to consider putting a roll cage on that thing.
Bet it's a wild ride though.
Just noticed that you reduced the sprocket teeth on the back sprocket, you actually geared it up and can go even faster than the bike did assuming you still have the same front sprocket as the bike did.
What type of welding did you do on the frame, stick, mig or tig?
Ah I didn't think about how much smaller your rear tires are, you are right you would need a much smaller sprocket in the rear to get back to the orginal drive ratio of the bike. I overlooked that, just thinking about how wild a ride that thing will be. If you get any kind of traction you might just need some wheelie bars on it.
Yup, my rear wheels are only 12" high, vs the original GS750 wheel which is much bigger. I probably need an even smaller sprocket but hopefully I got it just right.
I welded everything with a 230v AC stick welder -- nothing fancy. I think I just used 6011 3/32 rod on almost everything. I used 7014 (I think) on my engine mount, and on my front steering components. I'm using 1 1/4 OD inch hot rolled steel pipe (1" ID) , and I notched the pipe for the joints. I've done the jump-up-and-down test on my frame, but that's it. I can't tell if my welds have good penetration. I really should weld up a test joint and cut it in half to see how good it is, but I just haven't done that yet.
I also have a MIG machine, but It's only a 120v 90amp max unit that uses flux core wire. I use that for thin sheet metal which I haven't used on my kart yet.
I do want to get a really nice MIG machine with shielding gas capibility , and also a better AC/DC Inverter ARC/TIG machine, but for now my stick machine is doing the job.

Where are you going to mount the GPS Navigation system ?
Probably just in my pocket.. It's going to be more intersting to see how fast I'm able to get out of the drivers seat, and run into the bathroom to clean myself up.

Which steering wheel support are you referring to? The small lower tube, or the upper long tube? Everything is fully welded and nothing is tacked. I have NOT cleaned up the welds yet (Slag and berries are still there) so maybe that's what you're seeing? The small lower tube is perfect because I can see my penetration just by looking inside it. The joint that concerns me the most is my front spindle 'U' bracket welds -- If one of those let go, the entire front wheel dislodges.
This is NOT a safe machine by any measure. This machine is not even safe to look at, so please exercise caution when looking. :D
