Hello ther....it's me again, I swear I do have a life...
I have a 54 Merc that is primered only. I want to wait till the winter to paint it, but someone told me that the primer needs to be sealed otherwise it would chip. Is this true?

Primer is not water proof, it will allow condensation to go thru the primer and onto the metal, rust happens. Scuff it with some 400 grit and shoot some clear over it. You will have to send through the clear and probably re prime the entire car when you are ready to paint it, but it's better than having it become rust
Hey Dave;
!!!!!!!!!!!YOU ARE THE BESTEST!!!!!!!!!!
About the clear; any particular one?
What Dave said ^
primer just gives the paint some tooth to stick (hang) to .
And if you leave it that way very long it'll soak up any moister that gets on it and take it strait down to the bare metal underneath .
>> it gives NO protection At ALL ! <<
" if any thing it'll help the H2o stay on the car longer :eek:"

Okay; so is there a specific type or is it just standard clear coat??
I mean, can I just go to a paint shop and say clear coat it???or are they gonna look at me like i'm crazy...
If you're planning to re-spray the car anyway I would suggest using a 2 part epoxy primer instead of the clear. The epoxy will seal it for a time. Is the car going to be left out in the elements or is it garaged? Epoxies will seal the substrate but they are not UV stable and will break down over time if left out in the weather. Talk to your paint supplier about what to use.

Why not go with flat black paint instead of primer? It still gives it the rat rod look while playing it safe. You're in NY right, best if you do the paint before the raining season. Check out house of kolor they have great clear coats. Eastwood.com carries it!

Hey Kevin; How's it going?
Thanks for the refferal....I kind of like it gray. Is there such a thing as flat gray paint??? I still don't know about the color scheme. Do you know of any places I can go to, where I can get some ideas?? Let me know....If I leave it up to my daughters, It would be cotton candy with pink and baby blue shag carpeting???AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Well painting it cotton candy with pink and baby blue shag carpeting would be pretty cool! Yeah there sure is a flat gray, you just have to go to a near by paint store and bug them about questions you might have. Who knows maybe you will get a bright idea from them!

Easy with the pink comments!! :LOL::LOL: ..........I just painted mine pink and purple :D :D
As for flat gray you can buy flatting agent and put it in any color you want to make it flat....... Depending on how much you use you can get semi gloss, egg shell, etc. all the way to primer flat
